Chapter 13 - Two Charlottes.

The woman on the ballroom screen looked enough like Charlotte to make strangers believe the lie before hearing a word.

She had the same dark hair.

The same gray eyes.

Even the shape of her jaw echoed Eleanor's family line.

Charlotte felt Samuel move beside her.

"Who is she?"

Vivienne answered before anyone else.

"Her name is Claire Rowan."

Daniel turned sharply.

"You know her."

"I know what Victor paid her to become."

Charlotte stared at the screen.

Claire wore a navy dress and a pearl necklace that had once belonged to Eleanor.

Charlotte recognized the necklace immediately.

Her mother had worn it in every formal family portrait after Thomas died.

Seeing it on Claire felt more violating than the forged documents.

"Where did she get that?"

Vivienne's voice became quieter.

"Victor took it from Eleanor's safe after the funeral."

Charlotte looked at Samuel.

"Why does Claire look like us?"

Samuel said nothing.

That silence frightened her.

"Samuel."

He exhaled.

"Because Claire is family."

Charlotte's stomach dropped.

"Whose?"

Samuel looked at the floor.

"Mine."

Adrian stared at him.

"You have a daughter?"

"I had a relationship before I disappeared."

"Her mother never told me she was pregnant."

Charlotte looked from Samuel to the screen.

"Claire is my cousin."

"Yes."

The resemblance suddenly made sense.

So did Victor's strategy.

A Vale relative could pass superficial genetic comparisons while being trained to impersonate Charlotte.

Daniel was already thinking through the legal implications.

"If Victor substituted Claire's DNA for yours, he could manufacture conflicting records and keep the injunction alive indefinitely."

Charlotte looked at Vivienne.

"How long has she been preparing for this?"

"Almost three years."

Samuel stepped toward Vivienne.

"You knew I had a daughter for three years and said nothing?"

Vivienne's laugh was bitter.

"You were supposed to be dead."

"Where is her mother?"

Vivienne looked away.

Samuel's face changed.

"Where is she?"

"Dead."

The word landed heavily.

"When?"

"Four years ago."

Samuel closed his eyes.

Charlotte saw grief arrive in him too late to be useful.

On the screen, Claire began speaking.

"For years, I was kept away from Solmere because my mother feared the pressure of public life."

Charlotte shook her head.

The script was clever.

Claire was not claiming Charlotte had never existed.

She was claiming Charlotte had been hidden, traumatized, and recently rescued from people manipulating her identity.

Victor had built a story designed to absorb contradictions instead of avoiding them.

Julian stood beside Claire like a protective cousin.

"The impostor downstairs has exploited family tragedy for financial gain," he told the cameras.

Charlotte laughed once.

"He almost sounds sincere."

Daniel looked at her.

"That is what makes him dangerous tonight."

Charlotte picked up her father's letter and slid it into the blue ledger.

"Then we stop arguing with the story."

"What does that mean?"

"We show something they cannot imitate."

Samuel looked at her.

"The archive."

"My mother designed it to verify me."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Biometric authentication."

"More than that."

Charlotte remembered the safe opening in Suite 4201.

The system had recognized her before she touched the pad.

"Eleanor expected an identity attack."

"She would have built a challenge Victor could not fake."

They returned to Room 907 under federal guard.

The corridor fire had been extinguished.

Smoke damage stained the walls, but the vault remained intact.

Charlotte sat at the archive terminal.

The screen displayed one prompt.

CHARLOTTE VALE - COMPLETE LEGACY VERIFICATION.

She pressed CONTINUE.

A childhood photograph appeared.

It showed Charlotte at age seven beside Eleanor and Thomas in the hotel's kitchen.

A question appeared beneath it.

WHAT DID YOUR FATHER HIDE INSIDE THE BIRTHDAY CAKE?

Charlotte smiled despite everything.

"A silver room key."

The system accepted the answer.

A second photograph appeared.

Eleanor and Charlotte stood barefoot on a beach.

WHAT NAME DID YOUR MOTHER GIVE THE STORM?

"Mr. Frederick."

Samuel laughed softly.

"She named a storm Mr. Frederick?"

"I was nine."

The system accepted the answer.

Then the screen asked for Charlotte's right hand.

She placed her palm against the reader.

A scan moved across her fingerprints.

VERIFIED.

The final prompt requested a voice phrase.

Charlotte leaned toward the microphone.

"Solmere is a promise, not a possession."

The phrase had been Eleanor's favorite line about the hotel.

The screen turned green.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED - CHARLOTTE ELEANOR VALE.

Daniel exhaled.

"That can be independently certified."

Charlotte looked at the list of unlocked files.

"Put it on the ballroom feed."

Samuel hesitated.

"Victor will cut the signal."

"Then send it everywhere."

Daniel understood.

Within minutes, federal technicians routed the archive verification to news networks, shareholders, and state regulators simultaneously.

Charlotte watched the ballroom screen change.

Claire's speech vanished.

Eleanor's verification system appeared in its place.

The room erupted.

Victor grabbed for the microphone.

The screen displayed Charlotte's verified fingerprints, voiceprint, childhood challenge responses, and the original succession trust checksum.

Claire stared upward.

Her face went white.

Charlotte watched her carefully.

She did not look angry.

She looked terrified.

Then Claire turned toward Victor.

"You said she would fail."

Victor leaned toward her.

His reply was not caught by the stage microphone.

But Claire recoiled.

Julian grabbed her arm.

Claire pulled away.

"Do not touch me."

Charlotte stood.

"She wants out."

Daniel shook his head.

"Maybe."

"No."

Charlotte pointed at Claire's face.

"I know that look."

"It is the look people get when they realize the person protecting them is actually holding them hostage."

Samuel stared at his daughter on the screen.

"We have to get her out."

Charlotte nodded.

"We will."

Before they reached the ballroom, the hotel lights went out.

Not the emergency lights.

Everything.

The entire Solmere vanished into darkness.

A second later, every phone in the building lost signal.

Adrian whispered one name.

"Victor."

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the dead archive screen.

"This is the old foundation kill switch."

Charlotte stared at him.

"Who has access?"

Samuel's answer was immediate.

"Only a Vale."

From somewhere above them came a muffled explosion.

Then a woman screamed over the ballroom emergency intercom.

It was Claire.

"Charlotte, if you can hear me, do not come upstairs."

A man's voice cut in behind her.

May you like

Julian's.

"Too late."
