Chapter 1 - Marble and Blood.

The lobby of the Solmere Hotel had been designed to make ordinary people feel small.

White orchids rose from black stone planters beneath crystal chandeliers that looked like frozen constellations.

A pianist played softly near the champagne bar while bankers, politicians, celebrities, and old-money families drifted beneath the golden light.

Then a scream cut through the music.

Every head turned toward the center of the marble floor.

Charlotte Vale hit the ground hard enough to knock the breath from her lungs.

Her plain white tank top had torn at one shoulder, her cheek was bruised, and blood shone at the corner of her mouth.

A leather-bound folder slid from beneath her arm and stopped beside a pair of silver heels.

Vivienne Harrow looked down at Charlotte as if she had found garbage on an expensive rug.

Vivienne was fifty-four, famous for charity galas, magazine covers, and a talent for making cruelty sound like etiquette.

Her white silk gown gleamed beneath the chandeliers, and the diamonds around her throat flashed each time she moved.

She had spent twenty years telling people that the Solmere belonged to families like hers.

She had never owned a single brick of it.

"Get out," Vivienne said.

Her voice carried perfectly across the silent lobby.

"People like you do not belong in a place like this."

Charlotte pressed one scraped palm against the marble and slowly pushed herself up.

No one helped her.

A woman near the elevators lowered her phone only after realizing everyone could see her recording.

A man in a tuxedo looked away as if humiliation were contagious.

Two security guards stood ten feet away and waited for an order from the hotel manager.

Adrian Cole had just stepped from behind the front desk.

He was fifty-six, silver-haired, sharply dressed, and trained to turn disasters into polite misunderstandings.

He saw Vivienne.

Then he saw Charlotte.

For one flickering second, something like recognition crossed his face.

Charlotte noticed.

That was why she had come dressed like this.

That was why she had arrived through the public entrance instead of the private executive elevator.

That was why she had allowed herself to be mistaken for someone powerless.

She needed to see who would reveal themselves when they believed Charlotte Vale had no witnesses who mattered.

Vivienne stepped closer.

"I asked you a question upstairs, and you lied to me."

Charlotte wiped the blood from her lip with the back of her hand.

"You did not ask a question."

"You demanded I explain why I was standing outside my mother's suite."

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Vivienne's smile sharpened.

"Your mother?"

She glanced at the guests and gave a small, theatrical laugh.

"Eleanor Vale has been dead for eight months."

Charlotte felt the old pain move through her ribs, but she did not give Vivienne the satisfaction of seeing it.

Eight months earlier, Eleanor Vale had been found dead after falling from the balcony of her private suite on the forty-second floor.

Police had called it an accident.

The hotel board had called it a tragedy.

Vivienne Harrow had called Charlotte personally and told her not to come home until the family attorneys settled the estate.

Three weeks later, those attorneys claimed Charlotte's inheritance had been placed into an irrevocable trust controlled by the Solmere board.

Six weeks after that, Charlotte's access cards stopped working.

Her corporate accounts disappeared.

Her name vanished from internal directories.

A rumor spread through financial circles that Eleanor's only daughter had suffered a breakdown overseas and had voluntarily surrendered control of the company.

Charlotte had never signed a single document.

She had spent the next five months proving that someone else had signed them for her.

Vivienne bent and picked up the leather folder.

"Is this what you were trying to steal?"

Charlotte's eyes went cold.

"Open it."

Vivienne hesitated.

That hesitation was small, but Charlotte saw it.

Adrian saw it too.

"Mrs. Harrow," Adrian said quietly, "perhaps we should handle this privately."

Vivienne turned on him.

"Privately?"

"She broke into a restricted executive floor."

"Call the police."

Charlotte rose to her feet.

The movement hurt, but she kept her shoulders straight.

"Please do."

Vivienne's expression tightened.

Charlotte pointed at the folder.

"Open it before they arrive."

Vivienne handed it to Adrian instead.

"You deal with this."

Adrian opened the brass clasp.

Inside lay a cream-colored document beneath a sheet of protective glassine.

A gold embossed seal reflected the chandelier light.

Across the top were the words SOLMERE LUXURY HOTEL GROUP - CERTIFICATE OF CONTROLLING OWNERSHIP.

Adrian stopped breathing for a moment.

His eyes moved to the legal name printed beneath the seal.

CHARLOTTE ELEANOR VALE.

Fifty-one percent controlling interest.

Sole beneficial owner upon the death of Eleanor Vale.

Certified by the State Corporate Registry.

Adrian looked up.

His face had gone pale.

Vivienne gave an impatient sigh.

"Well?"

Adrian swallowed.

"Ma'am..."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"She owns the building."

The silence that followed was different from the silence after Charlotte fell.

This silence had fear inside it.

The two security guards immediately stepped backward.

The woman near the elevator raised her phone again.

Vivienne stared at Adrian as though he had spoken in another language.

Then she laughed.

"That is impossible."

Charlotte reached out and took the certificate from Adrian's hands.

"It was difficult to obtain an original after someone erased my identity from every Solmere database."

Vivienne's eyes flickered toward Adrian.

Charlotte caught that too.

"But state records are harder to rewrite than hotel records."

Adrian loosened his tie.

"Miss Vale, I can explain."

"Not yet."

Charlotte faced Vivienne.

The socialite's arrogance had not disappeared, but a crack had opened beneath it.

Charlotte wiped the final streak of blood from her lip.

"Pack your things."

Vivienne's shock lasted only a second.

Then she smiled again.

"You think one piece of paper makes you safe?"

Charlotte did not move.

Vivienne leaned close enough that only Charlotte and Adrian could hear her next words.

"Your mother had the same document the night she died."

Charlotte's heartbeat stopped.

Vivienne stepped back, turned, and walked toward the private elevators.

Before the doors closed, she looked directly at Charlotte.

"If you want to know what happened to Eleanor, come to Suite 4201 before midnight."

The elevator doors met between them.

Charlotte looked down at the ownership certificate in her hands.

A faint red fingerprint had appeared along the gold seal.

May you like

It was not hers.

And when Adrian saw it, his face became even whiter.
