Chapter 12 - The False Heir.

The old Solmere bank vault sat beneath the hotel, two levels below the wine cellar and one level above the original foundation.
It had not held guest valuables in decades.
Eleanor had preserved it as part of the hotel's history.
Charlotte had played inside its open steel door when she was six.
Now federal agents swept the corridor before allowing anyone near it.
Victor Dane had disappeared during the ninth-floor fire.
Julian Vale had disappeared from the ballroom at almost the same time.
Daniel believed they were together.
Charlotte believed Daniel was probably right and hated that she had begun trusting his instincts again.
Vivienne sat handcuffed in a chair outside the vault.
She had agreed to cooperate in exchange for her attorney being contacted and the arson charge not being discussed until morning.
No one had promised her anything.
Charlotte stood in front of deposit box 314 with the brass key in her hand.
Samuel stood behind her.
Adrian waited near the vault door.
"You do not have to open it tonight," Daniel said.
Charlotte inserted the key.
"That sentence has never worked on me."
The lock clicked.
Inside was a narrow metal drawer.
Charlotte pulled it out.
There was no stack of money.
No jewelry.
Only three envelopes and a small cassette tape.
The first envelope was addressed to Eleanor.
The second was addressed to Samuel.
The third was addressed to Charlotte.
Her name had been written by her father thirteen years earlier.
Charlotte touched the ink.
She had forgotten how Thomas formed the letter C with a long upper curve.
Her hands began to shake.
Samuel noticed.
"I can read it for you."
Charlotte shook her head.
She opened the envelope herself.
My Charlie, the letter began.
Her father was the only person who had called her that.
If you are reading this, then something happened before I found the courage to tell you what our family has become.
Charlotte swallowed.
Thomas wrote that Solmere had been built with legitimate money but protected for decades through political favors, hidden payments, and relationships the Vale family never discussed publicly.
Eleanor had discovered some of those arrangements after marrying him.
Thomas had promised to end them.
Victor Dane had promised to help.
Instead, Victor expanded them.
Charlotte read faster.
Then she reached the sentence Vivienne had wanted her to see.
Your mother knows I am sick.
Charlotte stopped.
Samuel leaned over her shoulder.
She continued.
The doctors believe the damage is from a toxin that accumulated over time.
I believe someone has been poisoning me.
Eleanor believes it too.
Charlotte felt sick.
The next paragraph was worse.
Tonight, I asked Eleanor to increase the dose of medication that keeps my heart stable, even though the doctor warned the dosage may itself kill me.
I cannot endure another month of losing control of my body while Victor watches.
If I die after taking it, Eleanor did not murder me.
She gave me the choice I asked for.
Charlotte lowered the letter.
Vivienne's claim had contained just enough truth to be cruel.
Eleanor had given Thomas medication knowing it could stop his heart.
But Thomas had asked her to.
Samuel's eyes were wet.
"She carried that alone."
Charlotte looked at the second envelope.
"Did you know?"
"No."
The cassette tape caught Adrian's attention.
"There is a player in the archive office."
Daniel stopped him.
"Evidence team first."
Charlotte almost argued.
Then alarms sounded on every agent's phone at once.
Daniel looked at his screen.
"What now?"
One of the agents answered his radio.
"We have a live broadcast from the ballroom."
Charlotte turned.
A wall-mounted security monitor flickered on.
Julian Vale stood behind the ballroom podium.
Victor Dane stood beside him.
Dozens of shareholders had returned or never left.
News cameras filled the back of the room.
Victor had transformed the night's chaos into a press conference.
Charlotte stared at the screen.
"How did he get back in there?"
Adrian looked ashamed.
"Victor still has administrative access to emergency credentials."
On screen, Victor raised a hand for silence.
"Tonight, Solmere has been subjected to a coordinated criminal attempt to seize control of this company."
Charlotte almost laughed.
Daniel did not.
"He is building the counter-narrative."
Victor continued.
"A woman claiming to be Charlotte Vale entered the hotel with forged documents and accomplices."
Charlotte's face appeared on the screen behind him.
It was a photograph from the lobby, bruised and bleeding.
Beneath it were the words IDENTITY UNVERIFIED.
"You have got to be kidding me," Charlotte whispered.
Victor displayed medical records.
They carried Charlotte's name and described years of psychiatric treatment she had never received.
He displayed immigration documents claiming Charlotte Vale had died overseas four months earlier.
Then he introduced Julian.
"Under the emergency succession provisions, Julian Vale is the only verified living heir."
Julian stepped forward.
"I wish my cousin were here."
Charlotte stared at him.
"I am going to kill him."
Samuel almost smiled.
"Metaphorically."
"For legal purposes."
On screen, Julian continued.
"But the woman downstairs is not Charlotte."
Then Victor produced something that made Charlotte's blood freeze.
A DNA report.
It stated that the woman tested that morning had no biological relationship to Eleanor Vale.
Daniel grabbed the remote and paused the feed.
"Did anyone take your DNA today?"
Charlotte thought back.
The nurse in the medical room.
The swab used on the cut inside her mouth.
Her bandages.
"The nurse."
Adrian looked horrified.
"She took a cheek swab?"
"She said she was cleaning the wound."
Samuel swore.
Daniel looked at the report date.
"They had this prepared before the sample existed."
Charlotte stared at the words NO BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP.
"Then whose DNA did they test?"
Vivienne laughed from her chair.
Everyone turned.
"You are still asking the wrong question."
Charlotte faced her.
"What is the right one?"
Vivienne leaned back.
"Why do you think Victor spent years preparing to prove Charlotte Vale was not Charlotte Vale?"
"Because he wanted my shares."
"That is part of it."
"What is the other part?"
Vivienne looked almost sorry for her.
"Because there is another Charlotte Vale."
The vault corridor went silent.
Charlotte stared.
"What?"
Vivienne nodded toward the live broadcast.
Victor stepped away from the podium.
A young woman entered the ballroom from behind the stage.
She was in her late twenties.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
A face similar enough to Charlotte's that the resemblance made the room feel unreal.
Julian smiled and held out his hand to her.
Victor addressed the cameras.
"Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce Eleanor Vale's daughter."
May you like
The woman looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Charlotte Vale."
