Chapter 8 - The Ballroom of Liars.

Charlotte's first instinct was to reject Daniel's accusation.

Her second was to remember that almost every instinct she had trusted had been manipulated.

She stood in the dark freight control room with the recorder in one hand and her mother's blue ledger in the other.

Samuel remained several feet away.

Adrian watched both of them.

Daniel's voice came through the phone speaker.

"Charlotte, do not let him explain."

Samuel gave a bitter laugh.

"That is convenient advice from a man who sold her return schedule to Victor."

"I did not sell anything."

Charlotte's voice cut through them.

"Then explain the recording."

Silence.

"Daniel."

"I was feeding Victor information."

"I heard that part."

"Because the federal financial crimes unit asked me to."

Samuel rolled his eyes.

"Of course they did."

Daniel continued.

"I have been cooperating with investigators for seven months."

Charlotte's anger sharpened.

"You could have told me."

"No, I could not."

"You were my lawyer."

"And Victor had people inside your legal team."

"So you decided lying to me was protection."

Daniel exhaled.

"I decided keeping you alive was more important than keeping you comfortable."

Charlotte looked at Samuel.

"And the accusation against him?"

Daniel's voice lowered.

"There is video."

Samuel's face changed.

Charlotte saw it.

"What video?"

"A fragment recovered from the forty-second-floor security system."

"I thought the cameras were erased."

"Most were."

"What does it show?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Samuel on the balcony with Eleanor seconds before she fell."

Charlotte looked at her uncle.

"Is that true?"

Samuel answered immediately.

"Yes."

The room seemed to tilt.

Adrian stepped closer to Charlotte.

Samuel did not.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"You told me Victor and Vivienne were there."

"They were."

"You did not tell me you were on the balcony."

Samuel's eyes held hers.

"No."

"Did you touch her?"

Samuel closed his eyes for a second.

"Yes."

Charlotte raised the recorder as if it could defend her.

"Why?"

Before he answered, the hotel's emergency power came back.

A row of monitors flickered to life around them.

One displayed the grand ballroom on the third floor.

Hundreds of guests were gathering beneath a stage bearing the Solmere crest.

Adrian stared at the screen.

"That is the emergency shareholders meeting."

Charlotte looked at the time.

"At eleven thirty at night?"

"Victor scheduled it before you arrived."

Samuel pointed to the stage.

"Look."

A large screen behind the podium displayed a legal notice.

EMERGENCY SUCCESSION VOTE - CONTROL OF SOLMERE LUXURY HOTEL GROUP.

Charlotte read the listed candidate.

JULIAN VALE.

Her cousin.

Samuel swore softly.

Charlotte stared at the name.

Julian had spent most of the last decade in Europe, appearing at yacht parties and avoiding anything resembling work.

He was also the nearest living Vale relative after Charlotte.

Daniel spoke through the phone.

"That is why they filed the injunction this morning."

"To freeze my shares."

"Yes."

"And transfer control to Julian."

"Temporarily."

Samuel snorted.

"There is nothing temporary about Victor's temporary arrangements."

Charlotte looked at the ballroom feed.

Board members were taking their seats.

Vivienne entered from a side door.

Her hair was wet, her gown was hidden beneath a dark coat, and she looked furious.

Victor appeared behind her with two uniformed hotel guards.

Whatever had happened upstairs, he had regained control.

Then Julian Vale walked onto the stage.

Charlotte had not seen him since Eleanor's funeral.

He wore a black tuxedo and the expression of a man stepping toward a crown.

The shareholders applauded.

Charlotte's stomach turned.

"He knows."

Samuel nodded.

"He has to."

Daniel spoke quickly.

"Charlotte, do not go into that ballroom."

She almost smiled.

"You know me better than that."

"They are expecting you."

"Good."

"The injunction means they can have security remove you."

Charlotte looked at the blue ledger.

"Then they can do it in front of every shareholder."

Adrian understood first.

"You want them to hear the recording."

"I want them to hear everything."

Samuel shook his head.

"Not until we know who controls the feeds."

Charlotte pointed to the ballroom monitor.

"Can you get us onto that screen?"

Samuel stared at her.

"Maybe."

"That means yes."

"It means I can try."

Daniel interrupted.

"Charlotte, listen to me."

"I did that for five months."

Her voice hardened.

"Now you listen."

"If you are really working with federal investigators, bring them to the ballroom."

Daniel went quiet.

"Can you do that?"

"Yes."

"Then do it."

She ended the call.

Samuel watched her.

"You believe him?"

"No."

"Then why invite him?"

Charlotte looked toward the freight elevator.

"Because liars become useful when you force them to lie in the same room."

They took an old staff stairwell down thirty-seven floors.

By the time they reached the ballroom level, Charlotte's knees shook from pain and exhaustion.

Adrian offered his arm.

This time she accepted it.

Outside the ballroom doors, they could hear Julian speaking through the sound system.

"My aunt Eleanor dedicated her life to Solmere."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

Julian had visited Eleanor twice in the last five years.

He continued.

"And in her final months, she became deeply concerned about Charlotte's ability to carry that responsibility."

Charlotte opened her eyes.

Samuel looked furious.

"That is the medical narrative."

Inside, Julian said, "Eleanor asked me to protect this company if Charlotte could not."

Applause followed.

Charlotte pushed open the ballroom doors.

The applause died.

Hundreds of faces turned toward her.

Julian stopped speaking.

Vivienne's mouth opened.

Victor simply stared.

Charlotte walked down the center aisle in a torn white tank top, wet jeans, bruised cheek, and dried blood at her lip.

No diamonds.

No entourage.

No permission.

Every camera in the ballroom found her.

She stopped twenty feet from the stage.

"That is a beautiful speech, Julian."

Her cousin swallowed.

"Charlotte."

"There is only one problem."

She held up the blue ledger.

"My mother left me her version."

Victor stepped to the microphone.

"Security."

Before the guards moved, the giant screen behind him went black.

Samuel smiled from the rear control booth.

Then Eleanor Vale's face appeared across the thirty-foot display.

It was a video Charlotte had never seen.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

"If you are watching this, someone has tried to steal Solmere from my daughter."

The room erupted.

Victor turned white.

Charlotte looked at Samuel.

He looked just as surprised as everyone else.

May you like

Then Eleanor continued.

"And the first person Charlotte must not trust is my brother, Samuel Vale."
