Chapter 7: Daniel’s Final Escape Plan

The ballroom had become a battlefield.

Not with weapons.

Not with violence.

But with truth.

For years, Daniel Whitmore had controlled every room he entered. He knew what people wanted to hear. He knew how to make powerful people feel safe. He knew how to turn kindness into a weapon and trust into a trap.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, everyone had seen behind the mask.

The screen above the stage continued showing the recording.

Daniel’s own voice filled the room.

"Once the mother drinks the tea, the daughter will have no reason to continue."

No one spoke.

No one needed to.

The meaning was clear.

The charming businessman everyone admired had planned a murder.

Claire looked at the tea cup sitting on the table.

A small porcelain cup.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

And deadly.

She felt a wave of anger replace the fear she had carried all evening.

Daniel had looked her in the eyes.

He had smiled.

He had offered her a drink while knowing exactly what was inside.

And he had expected everyone to believe he was the victim.

"Daniel," Victor said firmly.

For the first time, there was no respect in his voice.

Only disappointment.

"You are finished."

Daniel slowly turned toward him.

The anger in his eyes was impossible to hide.

"You?"

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"After everything I did for you?"

Victor shook his head.

"You never did anything for me. You used me."

Daniel smiled.

"Everyone is used by someone."

He looked around the room.

"That's how this world works."

Several guests looked uncomfortable.

Because some of them knew exactly what he meant.

Daniel pointed toward the politicians sitting nearby.

"You think they are innocent?"

The room became tense.

"They accepted my donations. They attended my events. They benefited from my success."

He laughed quietly.

"And now they want to pretend they never knew me."

Nobody answered.

Because some accusations were impossible to deny.

Claire watched Daniel carefully.

Even cornered, he was dangerous.

A desperate person would beg.

A guilty person would apologize.

But Daniel Whitmore was doing something else.

He was creating chaos.

And chaos was where he felt strongest.

Emma stepped beside her mother.

"He's trying to distract everyone."

Claire nodded.

"He knows the evidence is against him."

"Then why isn't he running?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

Because suddenly, she understood.

"He doesn't need to escape yet."

Emma frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"He's waiting for something."

At that moment, Daniel reached into his jacket.

Several guests gasped.

Security officers immediately reacted.

But Daniel only pulled out a small phone.

He smiled.

"You all think this is over."

Victor stepped forward.

"Put the phone down."

Daniel ignored him.

"You don't understand what you started tonight."

Claire felt a chill.

"What did you do?"

Daniel looked at her.

"You should ask your daughter."

Emma froze.

"What?"

Daniel smiled.

"Tell your mother what happened two weeks ago."

Claire turned toward Emma.

"Emma?"

Her daughter looked uncomfortable.

"I..."

Daniel laughed.

"She didn't tell you everything."

The room became silent.

Claire stared at Emma.

"What is he talking about?"

Emma looked away.

"Mom..."

Her voice was quiet.

"I found something else."

Claire felt her heart sink.

"What?"

Emma took a deep breath.

"When I found the financial records, I also found information about Dad."

Robert's face appeared on the screen again.

Even he looked surprised.

"What information?"

Emma looked at the screen.

"Dad wasn't just investigating Daniel."

Claire waited.

"He was working with someone inside the foundation."

Victor frowned.

"Who?"

Emma looked toward the crowd.

And pointed.

Everyone followed her finger.

The person she pointed at was sitting quietly near the back of the room.

An older man wearing a dark suit.

Someone Claire had seen all night.

Someone nobody questioned.

"Thomas Ashford."

The guests gasped.

The founder of the Ashford Foundation.

The man whose name was on every building, every donation, every charity event.

Thomas slowly stood.

His expression remained calm.

Too calm.

Daniel smiled.

"Finally."

Claire felt the room shift.

"Daniel and Thomas were working together?"

Emma shook her head.

"No."

She looked terrified.

"They weren't partners."

"Then what?"

Emma whispered:

"They were enemies."

The answer confused everyone.

Thomas stepped forward.

"You don't understand what you found."

Claire looked at him.

"Then explain."

Thomas remained silent.

Daniel laughed.

"Go ahead, Thomas. Tell them."

Thomas looked at Daniel.

And for the first time, his calm expression cracked.

"You're insane."

Daniel smiled.

"No. I'm the only one telling the truth."

He turned toward the guests.

"The Ashford Foundation was never my organization."

Everyone stared.

"It was his."

He pointed at Thomas.

"And he built it on a lie."

Thomas immediately responded.

"Don't listen to him."

But Daniel continued.

"Seven years ago, Robert Bennett discovered the truth."

Claire felt her body freeze.

Seven years.

Everything connected.

Robert’s disappearance.

The missing files.

The foundation.

The tea.

All of it.

Daniel looked at Claire.

"Your husband wasn't killed because he investigated me."

Claire held her breath.

"Then why?"

Daniel smiled.

"Because he discovered who was really in control."

The entire room went silent.

Thomas Ashford.

The respected billionaire.

The charitable founder.

The man everyone trusted.

Was suddenly at the center of the mystery.

Emma looked at her mother.

"Mom..."

Claire whispered:

"Who do we believe?"

Nobody answered.

Then the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A group of federal agents entered.

Everyone turned.

A woman in a dark suit walked forward.

"Daniel Whitmore."

She held up a badge.

"You are under arrest."

Daniel looked at her.

Then smiled.

Because he didn't look surprised.

He looked prepared.

"I was wondering when you would arrive."

The agent frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel glanced toward Thomas.

Then toward Claire and Emma.

"It means you are exactly on time."

Claire felt a terrible realization.

Daniel had wanted the arrest.

He had planned for it.

Because whatever he had prepared next...

Was bigger than the tea.

Bigger than the foundation.

Bigger than any secret they had uncovered.

May you like

Daniel Whitmore was not trying to win anymore.

He was trying to take everyone down with him.
