Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

Every person in the room stared at the large screens hanging above the stage.

The footage continued playing.

Emma Bennett walking through the foundation’s private office.

Emma opening a file cabinet.

Emma removing documents.

To anyone watching, it looked like a simple story.

A young woman had betrayed the organization that trusted her.

Whispers spread across the tables.

"Is that her?"

"She stole confidential records?"

"I can't believe it."

Claire felt every accusation in the room like a physical blow.

But she didn't look at the guests.

She looked at Daniel Whitmore.

Because while everyone else was shocked, Daniel looked exactly how a person looked when everything was going according to plan.

Calm.

Confident.

Prepared.

He had not been surprised by the footage.

Because he created this moment.

Emma sat frozen beside her mother.

Her face had gone pale.

"I knew he would do this," she whispered.

Claire turned toward her.

"You knew?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"Daniel never attacks the truth directly."

"What do you mean?"

"He attacks the person who discovered it."

Claire looked back at the screen.

She suddenly understood.

Daniel did not need to prove the files were fake.

He did not need to explain where the money went.

He only needed everyone to believe Emma was dishonest.

Once people questioned Emma’s character, they would stop listening to her accusations.

It was a classic strategy.

Destroy the messenger before anyone hears the message.

A microphone clicked.

Daniel stepped onto the stage.

The entire room turned toward him.

"Everyone," he began, his voice full of disappointment, "I apologize for this interruption."

His tone was gentle.

Concerned.

Almost painful.

"I never wanted tonight to become about conflict."

Several guests nodded sympathetically.

Claire watched carefully.

Daniel was good.

Very good.

He knew exactly how to appear like the victim.

"But recently," Daniel continued, "our organization discovered that sensitive financial information had been accessed without permission."

He paused.

"I hoped there was a reasonable explanation."

His eyes moved toward Emma.

"But unfortunately, the evidence speaks for itself."

A few guests looked at Emma with disappointment.

Claire felt her anger growing.

Evidence?

No.

A performance.

Daniel continued.

"I have known Emma for years. I have always considered her a kind and intelligent young woman."

He sighed.

"Which makes tonight especially heartbreaking."

Emma looked down.

Claire squeezed her hand.

"Don't listen."

But Emma’s voice was quiet.

"Everyone believes him."

"No."

"They do."

Claire looked at her daughter.

"Not everyone."

Emma looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Claire nodded toward the corner of the room.

A woman stood near the back entrance.

She was older, wearing a simple black dress. Unlike the wealthy guests around her, she looked uncomfortable.

Nervous.

But she was watching Daniel with anger, not suspicion.

"Who is she?" Claire asked.

Emma followed her mother’s gaze.

Her expression changed.

"That’s Margaret."

"Who?"

"Margaret Lewis."

The name meant nothing to Claire.

But the way Emma said it told her everything.

"Why is she important?"

Emma hesitated.

"Because she was the person who helped me find the missing records."

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

"Then why didn't you mention her?"

"Because I thought she was in danger."

Claire looked back at the woman.

"Is she?"

Before Emma could answer, Margaret suddenly stepped forward.

"That's a lie!"

The entire ballroom turned.

Daniel stopped speaking.

Margaret’s voice shook, but she continued.

"The evidence has been manipulated."

The room erupted.

Daniel looked surprised.

Only briefly.

Then his expression became calm again.

"Margaret," he said softly, "I think you may be confused."

"No," she replied. "I'm not."

She walked closer to the stage.

"I worked for this foundation for fifteen years. I know exactly how the records were handled."

Victor Hale immediately moved toward her.

"Mrs. Lewis, please return to your seat."

Margaret ignored him.

"Daniel Whitmore is hiding something."

The room became silent again.

Daniel smiled.

A dangerous smile.

"And what exactly am I hiding?"

Margaret looked directly at him.

"The money."

A wave of shock moved through the guests.

Daniel laughed softly.

"That's a serious accusation."

"It’s the truth."

"Do you have proof?"

Margaret opened her purse.

For a moment, Claire thought she would reveal the documents.

But then something unexpected happened.

Two security officers approached her.

"Mrs. Lewis, you need to step away."

Margaret looked frightened.

Not because of the guards.

Because she realized something.

Someone had already searched her.

Someone had already taken the evidence.

Claire watched carefully.

Daniel had expected her.

This entire event was not just about Emma.

It was about anyone who knew too much.

Margaret looked toward Claire.

Their eyes met.

And Claire saw something hidden there.

A warning.

A message.

Then Margaret mouthed three words:

"Trust nobody here."

Suddenly, the ballroom lights went out.

The guests screamed.

For several seconds, there was nothing but darkness.

Then emergency lights turned on.

Everyone looked around.

And Claire’s heart sank.

Because Emma was no longer sitting beside her.

Her chair was empty.

Claire stood up immediately.

"Emma?"

No answer.

The crowd began moving.

Security rushed around the room.

Daniel looked toward Claire.

For the first time all night...

His calm expression disappeared.

Because something had happened that he did not expect.

Emma was gone.

And whoever took her...

Was not working for him.

Claire searched the room desperately.

Then she saw something on Emma’s chair.

A small folded piece of paper.

Her hands trembled as she picked it up.

She opened it.

Three words were written inside.

"Your daughter knows."

Claire stared at the message.

And for the first time that night, she wondered if Emma had not been taken away.

Maybe...

May you like

Emma had escaped.

And maybe her daughter had a plan that even Daniel Whitmore didn't know about.
