Chapter 3: The Locked Ballroom

The words echoed through the grand dining hall.
"We need everyone to remain seated."
For most of the guests, it sounded like a routine security announcement.
A minor inconvenience.
Perhaps a lost item.
A misunderstanding.
But Claire Bennett knew better.
She saw the way Daniel Whitmore calmly returned to his seat.
She saw the way the security director avoided looking at certain guests.
And most importantly, she saw the fear in her daughter’s eyes.
This was planned.
The entire ballroom had become a cage.
Claire slowly lowered herself back into her chair.
"Don't panic," she whispered.
Emma looked at her.
"Mom, I'm not the one who's panicking."
Claire almost smiled.
Almost.
Despite everything happening around them, her daughter was still trying to protect her.
That was the thing Claire admired most about Emma.
She had always been kind.
Sometimes too kind.
She believed people deserved second chances. She believed honesty mattered. She believed doing the right thing was worth any sacrifice.
But tonight, Claire was learning that the world Emma had uncovered was much darker than either of them imagined.
Across the room, the security director continued speaking.
"My apologies for the interruption. Due to an unexpected situation involving confidential information, we ask everyone to remain calm while our team handles the matter."
A wave of whispers spread throughout the guests.
Confidential information.
Those three words immediately changed the atmosphere.
The politicians stopped smiling.
The businessmen looked uncomfortable.
Everyone understood that this was not about a missing purse or a technical problem.
Someone had a secret.
And someone was afraid it would come out.
Claire leaned closer to Emma.
"Where are the files?"
Emma’s eyes widened slightly.
"What?"
"The documents you found. Where are they?"
Emma hesitated.
"I don't have them."
Claire studied her daughter.
"Emma."
"I don't have the originals."
"Then where are they?"
Emma looked around carefully before answering.
"I made copies."
Claire felt a small sense of relief.
"Where?"
Emma lowered her voice.
"Somewhere Daniel can't reach."
Before Claire could ask more, a man approached their table.
Not Daniel.
The security director.
His name was Victor Hale.
He was a tall man with silver hair and a serious expression. He had spent years protecting the Ashford Foundation and was considered one of the most loyal employees.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
"Mrs. Bennett," Victor said.
Claire looked up.
"Yes?"
"I need to ask you and your daughter a few questions."
"About what?"
Victor glanced at Emma.
"About a security issue involving stolen information."
The word stolen immediately caught Claire’s attention.
Not leaked.
Not discovered.
Stolen.
They were already creating a story.
Claire smiled politely.
"I’m afraid I don't understand."
Victor leaned slightly closer.
"Your daughter accessed restricted files."
Several nearby guests turned toward them.
Claire felt anger rise inside her.
They were not investigating.
They were accusing.
Emma opened her mouth.
But Claire stopped her with a small movement of her hand.
She knew what Daniel wanted.
He wanted Emma to react.
He wanted her to defend herself emotionally.
Because emotional people were easier to destroy.
"My daughter volunteered for the foundation," Claire said calmly. "She had authorization to work with records."
Victor’s expression remained cold.
"Not all records."
"And you know that how?"
A brief silence followed.
Victor looked uncomfortable.
Only for a second.
But Claire noticed.
Interesting.
He wasn't as confident as he pretended.
"Mrs. Bennett," Victor said, lowering his voice, "this situation is more serious than you realize."
Claire stared at him.
"I think I understand perfectly."
Victor looked surprised.
"You do?"
Claire glanced around the ballroom.
At the cameras.
The locked doors.
The nervous guests.
The untouched tea.
"Someone is trying to control the situation."
Victor said nothing.
That silence told Claire everything.
She had guessed correctly.
Victor stepped back.
"I suggest you cooperate."
Then he walked away.
Emma waited until he was gone.
"Mom."
"Yes?"
"That was Victor Hale."
"I know."
"He's Daniel's closest security adviser."
Claire nodded.
"And now he knows we're a problem."
Emma looked frightened.
"What are we going to do?"
Claire looked toward the main entrance.
The massive wooden doors were guarded.
The side exits were blocked.
The windows were too high to reach.
They were surrounded.
Then Claire noticed something.
A waiter walking past their table.
He dropped a napkin beside Emma.
At first, Claire thought it was an accident.
But Emma quietly picked it up.
Inside was a small message.
Emma read it.
And the color drained from her face.
"What does it say?" Claire asked.
Emma slowly handed the note to her.
Claire opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
"You were right not to trust him. But you trusted the wrong person instead."
Claire looked up.
Her eyes moved across the room.
Whoever sent the message was nearby.
Someone inside the ballroom knew the truth.
Someone else was watching.
Then another detail caught her attention.
The handwriting.
She recognized it.
Not from the dinner.
Not from the files.
From somewhere much closer.
The handwriting belonged to someone she never expected.
Someone who had been sitting at their table all evening.
Claire’s heart began racing.
Because the person who sent the warning...
Was not a stranger.
It was someone they came here with.
Emma noticed her mother's expression.
"Mom?"
Claire slowly folded the note.
"We have a bigger problem."
"What?"
Claire looked toward the person across the room.
"The person helping us might be the reason we're trapped here."
At that exact moment, every screen in the ballroom turned on.
The guests gasped.
A security video appeared.
It showed Emma entering the foundation office three weeks earlier.
Then another clip appeared.
Emma opening the restricted files.
The room erupted in whispers.
Daniel stood up.
His expression was calm.
Almost satisfied.
And then his voice filled the speakers.
"Everyone deserves to know the truth."
Claire stared at the screen.
Because she realized the most dangerous part of Daniel’s plan.
He wasn't going to hide Emma’s actions.
He was going to rewrite them.
He was going to make the world believe she was the villain.
May you like
And tonight...
He was going to destroy her reputation in front of everyone.
