Chapter 12: The Final Countdown

The red lights continued flashing across the ballroom.

The alarm grew louder.

Five minutes.

That was all they had.

Everyone stood frozen, trying to understand what Daniel had done.

The guests who had arrived expecting a charity event were now trapped inside a nightmare.

Federal agents moved quickly toward the doors.

"Everyone stay calm," one of them ordered.

But nobody was calm.

Not anymore.

Claire stared at the countdown on the screen.

04:52.

04:51.

Every second felt like a warning.

Daniel stood near the center of the ballroom, completely relaxed.

Almost satisfied.

Emma looked at him with anger.

"You locked everyone in here."

Daniel turned toward her.

"I protected the truth."

Emma shook her head.

"No. You destroyed lives."

A small smile appeared on Daniel's face.

"You still think this is about revenge."

He looked around the room.

"It's much bigger than that."

Victor stepped forward.

"You've lost your mind."

Daniel laughed quietly.

"Have I?"

He pointed toward the screen.

"Everything I built, every connection I created, every person who trusted me..."

He paused.

"It all depends on one thing."

Claire watched him carefully.

"What?"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"Control."

The room became silent.

Daniel continued.

"People don't follow the truth, Claire."

He walked slowly.

"They follow fear."

Emma tightened her grip on her mother's hand.

Claire noticed something.

Daniel wasn't looking at the doors.

He wasn't looking for an escape.

He was watching the screen.

Waiting.

Then she understood.

"You're not trying to destroy the evidence."

Daniel looked at her.

Finally, he smiled.

"You figured it out."

Claire's expression changed.

"You're releasing it."

The guests gasped.

Daniel nodded.

"At zero, every file will be sent."

Federal agents immediately turned toward him.

"Sent where?"

Daniel looked around the room.

"Everywhere."

A terrible silence followed.

"News organizations. Government databases. Private accounts."

He smiled.

"Anyone who ever mattered."

Emma looked horrified.

"But why?"

Daniel's expression changed.

For the first time, there was something darker than arrogance.

Pain.

"Because nobody wins when secrets come out."

Claire stared at him.

"You would destroy yourself too."

Daniel looked at her.

"Yes."

That answer shocked everyone.

Claire stepped forward.

"You don't care anymore."

Daniel said nothing.

"You'd rather burn everything than lose control."

His eyes narrowed.

"You don't know what losing feels like."

Claire looked at him sadly.

"Maybe I do."

Daniel laughed.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"You had Robert."

The name changed everything.

Claire froze.

Daniel continued.

"You had someone who believed in you."

His eyes moved toward Emma.

"You had a daughter who still sees you as a hero."

He looked back at Claire.

"I had nothing."

The room went quiet.

Even the agents hesitated.

Then Robert's recording suddenly returned.

The screen flickered.

Everyone turned.

Daniel's expression changed.

"What?"

Robert appeared again.

But this time, he wasn't reading from a prepared message.

He was speaking directly.

"If Daniel is watching this..."

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

"Impossible."

Robert continued.

"You probably believe you have already won."

Claire watched carefully.

Because Robert looked different.

This wasn't the scared man from the previous recordings.

This was someone who had planned ahead.

"But you made one mistake, Daniel."

The countdown continued.

03:30.

Robert opened another file.

"You always believed secrets were weapons."

A pause.

"But you forgot something."

The screen showed a folder labeled:

DANIEL WHITMORE — COMPLETE ARCHIVE

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Daniel's face lost color.

Robert continued.

"Secrets are only powerful when one person controls them."

Claire covered her mouth.

She understood.

Robert had prepared this.

Years ago.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"No..."

Victor looked at him.

"What did you do?"

Daniel ignored him.

Robert continued.

"I spent years collecting evidence."

Images appeared.

Bank records.

Emails.

Private meetings.

Financial transfers.

Everything connected to Daniel.

"The people who helped you. The people you threatened. The people you paid."

Robert looked directly into the camera.

"They are all here."

Daniel stepped back.

For the first time that night...

He looked afraid.

Emma whispered:

"Dad knew."

Claire nodded slowly.

"He knew Daniel would try something like this."

The federal agent immediately moved toward the control panel.

"Can we stop the countdown?"

A technician rushed forward.

"I'm trying."

The numbers continued.

03:00.

02:59.

Daniel suddenly moved.

"No."

Two agents blocked him.

"Don't move."

Daniel looked around the room.

His perfect plan was collapsing.

Claire watched him.

"You thought you were the only one who could prepare."

Daniel looked at her.

"You learned from Robert."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Emma.

"I learned from my daughter."

Emma looked surprised.

"What?"

Claire held her hand.

"She taught me that protecting someone doesn't mean hiding the truth from them."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

For years, Claire had carried her secret alone.

But now she finally understood.

Silence had never protected her family.

It had only given people like Daniel more power.

The countdown reached:

02:00.

The technician suddenly shouted.

"I found the system."

Everyone turned.

"Can you stop it?"

The technician hesitated.

"Not completely."

Claire's heart sank.

"Then what can you do?"

He looked at the screen.

"I can redirect the files."

"Where?"

The technician looked at her.

"To the original source."

Nobody understood.

Until Claire did.

"Robert."

The room became silent.

Robert's hidden system.

His final backup.

Daniel realized it too.

"No."

For the first time...

Daniel sounded afraid.

"He can't still be alive."

Claire looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel froze.

Everyone noticed.

Victor stepped closer.

"What did you just say?"

Daniel said nothing.

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"You said he can't still be alive."

The room went silent.

Emma whispered:

"Mom..."

Claire stared at Daniel.

"How would you know?"

Daniel looked away.

The countdown continued.

01:20.

01:19.

The truth was changing again.

Robert's disappearance.

Daniel's plan.

The hidden files.

Everything.

Claire stepped closer.

"You didn't make Robert disappear."

Daniel looked at her.

"You know what happened."

The room waited.

Daniel's silence was the answer.

Then the screen suddenly changed.

A new message appeared.

INCOMING VIDEO CONNECTION.

Everyone stared.

The ballroom lights flickered.

The screen went black.

Then...

A face appeared.

A face nobody expected.

Emma stopped breathing.

Claire's hand flew to her mouth.

May you like

Because after seven years...

Robert Bennett was alive.
