Chapter 10: The Betrayal Hidden in the Past

The recording played across the massive screen.

The entire ballroom watched in silence.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Because the person everyone had just trusted was now at the center of the mystery.

Evelyn Carter.

The woman who claimed she protected Robert.

The woman who claimed she was bringing justice.

The woman who had walked into the room carrying answers.

Now she was standing beside Robert in a seven-year-old recording.

And the words were impossible to ignore.

"Robert, if Claire finds out what we did, everything will collapse."

Claire felt as if the air had been taken from the room.

Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.

She wanted to believe there was an explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A hidden meaning.

Anything.

But the pain in her chest told her she was afraid of the answer.

Emma looked at Evelyn.

"Who are you?"

Evelyn did not respond immediately.

Her silence was louder than any confession.

Daniel stood near the stage, watching everything unfold.

And Claire noticed something.

He was no longer fighting.

He was enjoying it.

Because this was what he wanted.

He wanted them to turn against each other.

He wanted the truth to become impossible to separate from lies.

The federal agent looked at Evelyn.

"Ms. Carter, I suggest you explain."

Evelyn slowly looked around the room.

Then she looked at Claire.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words hurt more than anger would have.

Claire stepped forward.

"Sorry for what?"

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"For not telling you everything."

Claire’s voice shook.

"Seven years."

The entire room listened.

"Seven years, I believed my husband abandoned us."

Evelyn looked devastated.

"I know."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"You don't know."

Her voice grew stronger.

"You knew where he was. You knew he was alive. You knew I was suffering."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I wanted to tell you."

"But you didn't."

"I couldn't."

Claire stared at her.

"Couldn't?"

Evelyn took a breath.

"Because Robert asked me not to."

The room went silent.

Emma looked confused.

"My father asked you to hide?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

Claire felt her anger weaken for a moment.

"Why?"

Evelyn looked toward the screen.

"Because he discovered that the people involved were watching everyone close to him."

She pointed at Daniel.

"That included Daniel."

Daniel laughed.

"Convenient story."

Evelyn ignored him.

"Robert knew that if Claire and Emma knew he was alive, they would become targets."

Claire looked at the screen again.

The recording continued.

Robert was sitting at a desk.

He looked exhausted.

But determined.

"Evelyn, if anything happens to me, you cannot tell Claire until you know she's safe."

Claire covered her mouth.

Because she heard his voice.

The voice she missed for seven years.

But then another voice appeared.

A voice from off-camera.

A voice that changed everything.

"Robert."

Everyone froze.

Because Claire recognized it.

It was her own voice.

A younger version of herself.

The recording showed Robert turning toward someone outside the camera.

Then the video stopped.

The screen went black.

A collective gasp filled the room.

"What was that?" Emma whispered.

Claire couldn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

She had never been there.

She had never recorded that conversation.

Yet somehow...

Her voice was on the tape.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Now you understand."

Claire looked at him.

"What did you do?"

Daniel smiled.

"I didn't do anything."

He looked toward Evelyn.

"But she did."

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

"Don't listen to him."

Daniel continued.

"Seven years ago, Robert discovered something about Claire."

Claire felt a chill.

"About me?"

Daniel nodded.

"Something she never told anyone."

Emma looked at her mother.

"Mom?"

Claire felt confused.

"I don't know what he's talking about."

Daniel smiled.

"Of course you don't."

He looked toward the guests.

"Because the truth was buried."

The federal agent stepped between them.

"Enough games. We need the complete recording."

Evelyn nodded.

"I have it."

Everyone looked at her.

"The full version?"

She reached into her bag.

"Yes."

Daniel’s expression changed.

A small flash of fear appeared.

Claire noticed.

And that told her something important.

Whatever was on that recording...

Daniel didn't want anyone to hear it.

Evelyn connected a small device to the system.

The screen turned on again.

The video resumed.

Robert appeared.

But this time, he was not alone.

A woman sat beside him.

Claire leaned closer.

Her heart began racing.

Because she knew that woman.

Everyone in the room knew her.

It was Claire herself.

But the woman on the screen looked different.

Younger.

Terrified.

And sitting beside Robert was a folder marked with a date.

Seven years ago.

Robert looked into the camera.

"If you're watching this, then the truth finally came out."

He looked at the woman beside him.

Then back at the camera.

"Claire knows what happened."

The room froze.

Emma stared at her mother.

"Knows what?"

Robert continued.

"And she knows why I disappeared."

Claire stepped back.

"No..."

She shook her head.

"I don't understand."

On the screen, Robert opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And one final piece of evidence.

He held it up.

"This is the reason everything started."

The image appeared.

A single document.

At the top was a name.

A name that made Claire’s heart stop.

Because it was connected to her.

Not Daniel.

Not Thomas.

Not Evelyn.

Her.

The ballroom fell silent as everyone read the name.

And Claire finally understood.

The mystery of Robert’s disappearance was not only about powerful people.

It was about a secret she had buried seven years ago.

A secret even she had tried to forget.

Emma looked at her mother with tears in her eyes.

"Mom..."

Claire could barely speak.

May you like

Because the truth was finally coming out.

And she was afraid of what it would cost.
