Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden in Emma’s Room

Claire kept the teacup in her hand.

She did not drink.

She did not put it down.

She simply held it there, maintaining the same calm expression she had worn all evening.

Years of attending corporate meetings had taught her how to hide emotions. She had learned how to smile during difficult negotiations, how to remain composed during moments of pressure, and how to never reveal fear to someone who wanted to see it.

Tonight, those skills might save her life.

Daniel Whitmore stood beside the table, waiting.

His smile remained charming.

Patient.

Almost fatherly.

"Is something wrong, Mrs. Bennett?" he asked.

Claire looked at him carefully.

"No. I was just admiring the cup. It's beautiful."

A small laugh escaped from him.

"Attention to detail. I like that about you."

The words sounded innocent.

But Claire felt a hidden meaning behind them.

Attention to detail.

Was that a warning?

A reminder?

A threat?

Before she could respond, a waiter walked past their table, accidentally bumping into Daniel’s shoulder.

The moment was brief.

But Claire noticed something.

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

For less than a second, his friendly mask disappeared.

His eyes turned cold.

Angry.

Dangerous.

Then, just as quickly, he smiled again.

"Careful," Daniel said politely to the waiter.

The young man apologized repeatedly and continued walking.

Most people in the room would never have noticed.

But Claire did.

And now she understood why Emma was terrified.

This was not about a misunderstanding.

This was about survival.

"Mom."

Emma’s voice was barely audible.

Claire glanced at her daughter.

"What?"

Emma kept looking forward.

"Don't look at him."

Claire’s heart tightened.

"Who?"

"The man sitting near the window."

Claire resisted the urge to turn.

She moved only her eyes.

Near the large glass windows overlooking the gardens, a man in a dark suit sat alone. He wasn't eating. He wasn't talking.

He was watching.

Watching them.

Claire immediately looked back at her plate.

"Who is he?" she whispered.

Emma swallowed.

"I don't know his name."

"Then how do you know he's dangerous?"

Emma’s fingers trembled.

"Because I saw him with Daniel yesterday."

The answer sent a chill through Claire.

Yesterday.

Emma had not mentioned anything about yesterday.

"What happened yesterday?"

Emma stayed silent.

Claire looked at her daughter.

"Emma."

A tear almost formed in Emma’s eyes, but she quickly blinked it away.

"I found something."

"What?"

"Something Daniel has been hiding."

Claire carefully placed the teacup back on the table.

"Tell me."

Emma took a slow breath.

"Three weeks ago, I was helping organize files for the foundation."

Claire frowned.

She knew Emma volunteered with several charities, including the Ashford Foundation. She had always been proud of her daughter’s kindness.

"I was checking donation records," Emma continued. "At first, everything looked normal. Millions of dollars coming in and going out."

"But?"

Emma lowered her voice.

"But some money was disappearing."

Claire’s expression changed.

"Disappearing how?"

"Fake charities. Fake organizations. Money was being transferred into accounts that didn't exist."

The noise of the ballroom seemed to fade away.

Claire stared straight ahead.

"Are you sure?"

"I thought I was wrong," Emma whispered. "I wanted to believe I was wrong."

She paused.

"Then I found the names."

"What names?"

Emma looked at her mother.

"The names of the people involved."

Claire felt a heavy weight in her chest.

"Who?"

Emma hesitated.

Then she said quietly:

"Some of the most powerful people in this room."

Claire looked around.

The politicians laughing at nearby tables.

The businessmen shaking hands.

The wealthy guests celebrating their influence.

All of them suddenly looked different.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Emma looked down.

"Because I wasn't sure who I could trust."

The answer hurt Claire more than anything.

Her own daughter had been carrying this fear alone.

"You could have trusted me."

"I know," Emma whispered.

"Then why?"

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

"Because someone already knew I found the files."

A cold silence passed between them.

Claire felt her heart stop.

"Who?"

Emma looked toward Daniel.

"He came to my apartment two nights ago."

Claire’s hand tightened around the tablecloth.

"What did he say?"

Emma remembered the moment.

The knock on the door.

The calm voice.

The polite smile.

The warning hidden behind every word.

"He told me some discoveries were dangerous."

Claire felt anger rising inside her.

"He threatened you?"

Emma nodded slightly.

"He didn't need to."

"Why?"

"Because before he left, he showed me a photo."

Claire looked at her daughter.

"What photo?"

Emma’s voice became almost a whisper.

"A photo of you."

Claire froze.

"What?"

"He knew everything about you. Where you worked. Where you went. Your daily routine."

The room suddenly felt colder.

Daniel wasn't just trying to silence Emma.

He was using Claire as a message.

A warning.

"Why bring me here tonight?" Claire asked.

Emma looked at the untouched tea.

"Because I realized something."

"What?"

"The dinner wasn't planned to kill you."

Claire stared at her.

"Then what was it?"

Emma slowly turned her eyes toward Daniel.

"It was planned to see if I would tell you."

At that moment, Daniel stepped away from their table.

But before leaving, he looked directly at Emma.

Just for a second.

And he smiled.

Not a friendly smile.

A knowing smile.

A smile that said:

I know you told her.

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Daniel had been watching them the entire time.

And now the game had changed.

Because they were no longer trying to discover Daniel’s secret.

Daniel was trying to erase theirs.

Emma quietly reached beneath the table and grabbed her mother’s hand.

"Mom."

Claire squeezed her daughter’s fingers.

"What?"

Emma looked terrified.

"We need to leave."

Claire nodded.

But as she prepared to stand, the lights in the ballroom suddenly flickered.

The music stopped.

Every guest turned toward the stage.

A man stepped forward with a microphone.

And Claire recognized him immediately.

He was the head of security for the Ashford Foundation.

The same man Emma said she saw with Daniel.

His voice echoed through the dining hall.

"Good evening, everyone."

He smiled.

"There has been a small security concern."

The entire room went silent.

Then he looked directly at Claire and Emma.

"We need everyone to remain seated."

Claire’s blood ran cold.

Because she realized something terrifying.

They were not being invited to stay.

May you like

They were being trapped.

And Daniel Whitmore had just begun his plan.
