Chapter 5: Emma’s Hidden Plan

Claire read the message again.

"Your daughter knows."

Three words.

Simple.

But they carried a terrifying meaning.

Knows what?

Knows about Daniel?

Knows who took her?

Knows the truth about the missing money?

Or was there something even bigger that Claire had not discovered?

She looked around the darkened ballroom.

The emergency lights cast a strange red glow across the room. Guests were standing, whispering, and demanding answers. Security officers moved between tables, pretending to restore order.

But Claire noticed something.

Nobody was searching for Emma.

Not really.

They were searching for control.

Daniel stood near the stage, speaking quietly with Victor Hale.

Their conversation was hidden from everyone else.

But Claire watched their body language.

Daniel was angry.

Not frightened.

Angry.

That meant one thing.

Emma’s disappearance was not part of his plan.

For the first time that evening, Daniel Whitmore had lost control.

Claire walked quickly toward the nearest exit.

A security officer stepped in front of her.

"Mrs. Bennett, please remain seated."

"My daughter is missing."

"We are handling the situation."

"No," Claire said firmly. "You are protecting someone."

The officer’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Claire saw it.

Fear.

Not confidence.

She stepped closer.

"Who are you afraid of?"

The officer said nothing.

Before he could respond, Daniel appeared behind him.

"Mrs. Bennett."

His voice was calm again.

Too calm.

"I understand your concern."

Claire turned.

"Where is my daughter?"

Daniel looked genuinely concerned.

"I’m sure she will be found."

"That wasn't my question."

A silence passed between them.

The guests nearby began watching.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"You should be careful with accusations."

Claire stared at him.

"And you should be careful with threats."

For a moment, something cold appeared in Daniel’s eyes.

Then he smiled.

"You’re more like your daughter than I expected."

Claire felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you both believe the truth always wins."

He stepped closer.

"But sometimes, the truth disappears before anyone gets to hear it."

Claire held his gaze.

"Is that what happened to Emma?"

Daniel didn't answer.

And that silence was an answer itself.

Suddenly, Margaret Lewis appeared beside Claire.

"Mrs. Bennett."

Claire turned quickly.

"Where have you been?"

Margaret looked exhausted.

"Trying to avoid being removed from the building."

"Do you know where Emma is?"

Margaret glanced toward Daniel.

Then whispered:

"Yes."

Claire’s heart jumped.

"Where?"

"She planned this."

Claire stared at her.

"What?"

Margaret nodded.

"Emma wasn't kidnapped."

The words shocked Claire.

"Then why did she disappear?"

"Because she needed Daniel to believe she was gone."

Claire looked confused.

"Explain."

Margaret took a breath.

"Your daughter discovered something much bigger than missing donations."

"What bigger?"

Margaret looked around before speaking.

"Daniel Whitmore isn't stealing money from the foundation."

Claire frowned.

"Then what is he doing?"

Margaret’s voice dropped.

"He's using the foundation to hide illegal transactions between powerful people."

The room suddenly felt colder.

"Political donations?"

"More than that."

Claire looked toward the politicians sitting nearby.

The people who had spent the evening laughing and shaking hands.

Margaret continued.

"Daniel created a network. The foundation receives money from unknown sources, moves it through different accounts, and returns it disguised as legitimate donations."

Claire shook her head.

"Why would Emma risk exposing this?"

"Because she found the names."

"Whose names?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Everyone involved."

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

"Including people here tonight?"

Margaret nodded.

"Especially people here tonight."

A sudden noise interrupted them.

Claire looked toward the hallway.

A door had opened.

A figure stepped out from the shadows.

Emma.

Claire almost ran to her.

"Emma!"

Her daughter quickly hugged her.

"I'm sorry."

Claire held her tightly.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Then why would you disappear like that?"

Emma looked at Margaret.

Then back at her mother.

"Because I needed access to the security system."

Claire froze.

"What?"

Emma pulled out a small device from her pocket.

"I knew Daniel would try to frame me. I knew he would lock down the building."

Margaret nodded.

"Emma realized the only way to expose him was to make him think she was no longer a threat."

Claire stared at her daughter.

"You planned all of this?"

Emma looked guilty.

"I didn't want to involve you."

"But you did."

"I know."

Claire’s voice softened.

"You should have trusted me."

Emma looked down.

"I was scared."

Those two words broke through Claire’s anger.

She remembered how young her daughter was.

How much fear she had carried alone.

She touched Emma’s face.

"We do this together now."

Emma nodded.

Then her expression became serious.

"Mom, there’s something else."

"What?"

"When I accessed the security system..."

She paused.

"I found a recording."

"Of what?"

Emma looked toward Daniel.

"A conversation from tonight."

Claire followed her gaze.

Daniel was still standing near the stage.

Watching them.

Waiting.

"What conversation?"

Emma swallowed.

"The one where Daniel gave the order."

Claire’s heart stopped.

"Order for what?"

Emma looked at her mother.

"To make sure you never leave this building."

The words hung between them.

Claire felt the entire world become silent.

Daniel had not planned to scare them.

He had not planned to expose them.

He had planned something much worse.

He planned to erase them completely.

But Emma reached into her pocket and pulled out a small memory card.

"The recording is here."

Claire looked at it.

"Does Daniel know you have it?"

Emma shook her head.

"No."

A small smile appeared on Claire’s face.

"Then for the first time tonight..."

She looked toward Daniel.

"...he doesn't know what happens next."

But before they could move, every screen in the ballroom suddenly changed.

The security footage disappeared.

A new image appeared.

A live video feed.

And on the screen was a person nobody expected to see.

Emma’s father.

A man who had been missing for seven years.

Claire’s face turned pale.

Because the impossible had just happened.

Her daughter’s secret was not the only secret hidden in the room.

Someone else had been waiting in the shadows.

May you like

Someone from their past.

And he was ready to reveal everything.
