Chapter 3: The Bloodline Awakens

"You can't do this to me!" Elena shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as two massive security guards materialized on either side of her. "Julian! You're making a mistake! You're throwing away years—you're throwing away me for a beggar! You'll regret this! You'll beg me to come back!"

Her screams echoed down the marble hallway, but Julian didn't even look back. He cradled Lily tighter against his chest, feeling the child’s rapid heartbeat flutter against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"Don't worry, Lily," Julian murmured, his voice softening instantly as he spoke to the child. "You're safe now. No one is ever going to hurt you again."

He walked past the stunned crowd of onlookers, who parted like the Red Sea before him, and headed straight for his private subterranean parking garage. His personal driver, Marcus, a retired military veteran who had served the Vance family for two decades, stood by the door of the bulletproof Maybach. Marcus took one look at Julian carrying a bruised, ragged little girl, and his professional composure vanished for a split second before he snapped back into gear, swiftly pulling open the rear door.

"Get the medical kit from the trunk, Marcus," Julian commanded as he slid into the plush leather interior, settling Lily gently beside him. "And get us to the private estate in Westchester immediately. Call Dr. Henderson and have him waiting at the gates."

"Yes, sir," Marcus replied sharply, his eyes darting to the little girl in the rearview mirror with a deep, unspoken understanding.

The car glided out of the subterranean garage into the cool, neon-lit streets of New York City. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was thick with a heavy, suffocating silence. Lily sat huddled in the corner of the oversized seat, clutching the remaining wooden box of hairpins to her chest, her big, fearful eyes darting around the luxurious interior. She had probably never been in a car nicer than a rusted taxi cab.

"Are you hungry, Lily?" Julian asked gently, breaking the silence. He kept his voice low and steady, terrified of frightening her further.

Lily slowly shook her head, though her stomach let out a loud, traitorous rumble. She flushed crimson and bit her lip, looking down at her scuffed, mismatched shoes.

Julian felt a sharp pain in his chest. For thirty years, he had lived in an excess of wealth, buying whatever he wanted, dining on meals that cost more than a small car, while his own flesh and blood—his baby sister—had been starving on the streets of the same city.

How did this happen? he thought bitterly. Where has she been all these years? Who abandoned her?

The answers lay locked away in the dark history of the Sterling family, a history he had ignored because he thought it had nothing to do with him. But now, holding the silver hairpin in his pocket, he knew he was about to open a Pandora's box that would shake the foundations of the global elite.

"Marcus," Julian said, staring out the tinted window at the blurring city lights.

"Yes, Mr. Vance?"

"Contact our private investigators. I want a full, unredacted background check on every adoption agency, foster home, and social services database in the tri-state area over the last ten years. Find out who dropped Lily into the system. And find out who killed our parents."

Marcus’s hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. "Right away, sir. But... are you certain?"

May you like

Julian reached into his pocket, his thumb tracing the intricate, sharp edges of the royal dragon crest on the hairpin.

"I've never been more certain of anything in my life," Julian said coldly. "The game has changed."
