Chapter 2: Echoes of the Past

"Julian? Julian, darling, are you listening to me?" Elena’s voice pierced through the roaring static in his ears, sharp and demanding. She stepped closer, her diamond-encrusted bracelet jangling as she tried to pull him to his feet. "Get up. You’re making a scene. Let the concierge deal with the street rat. We have dinner reservations at Le Gabriel, and you know how difficult it is to get a table there on a Friday night."

Julian remained frozen on his knees. The marble floor felt like ice beneath his trousers, but he couldn't feel the cold. His entire universe had shrunk to the space between himself and the small, trembling girl sitting on the floor.

He looked closer at the child. Up until this second, she had just been an annoyance, a disruption to his high-society evening. Now, every detail screamed a terrifying familiarity. The shape of her jaw, the slight curve of her left earlobe—a genetic quirk carried exclusively by the male and female heirs of the Sterling bloodline for four generations—and the haunting, sorrowful depth of her gaze.

"What is your name?" Julian asked, his voice shaking in a way it hadn't since he was a terrified eight-year-old boy hiding in the back of a burning car.

The little girl shrank back instinctively, pressing herself tighter against the mahogany pillar. "L-Lily," she stammered, her lower lip quivering. "My name is Lily. Please... don't take my hairpins. They're all I have left of her."

"Lily," Julian repeated, tasting the name on his tongue like a rare, bitter wine.

Twenty-five years ago, the Sterling dynasty had been ripped apart by a violent political coup and a series of coordinated tragedies. The reigning Duke and Duchess—Julian’s biological parents—had supposedly perished in a suspicious private plane crash. Julian, then a toddler, had miraculously survived because he had been left in the care of a nanny miles away, a nanny who was later murdered, leading to his eventual adoption by the wealthy, ruthless Vance family, who bought his identity and buried his heritage beneath layers of corporate steel.

For years, Julian had believed he was the last of a dead line. He had spent his youth proving himself to his adoptive father, climbing to the top of the corporate ladder through sheer ruthlessness, believing that blood meant nothing and power meant everything.

And now, here sat a child. His sister. Born long after the crash, raised in the shadows of the slums, surviving on scraps while he dined on caviar and champagne.

"Julian! This is beyond ridiculous!" Elena shrieked, her patience finally snapping. She reached down and grabbed Julian by the lapel of his custom-tailored Tom Ford suit jacket, trying to haul him up. "If you don't stand up right now and walk away from this filthy beggar, our engagement is over. Do you hear me? I will not be humiliated by a stray child!"

Julian slowly turned his head to look up at Elena.

For months, he had tolerated Elena’s vanity, her cruelty, and her obsession with status, viewing her as an acceptable accessory for a man in his position. But looking at her now, through the lens of this shattering revelation, she looked like a monster. A shallow, pathetic creature standing on the precipice of an abyss she couldn't even perceive.

"Your engagement?" Julian echoed softly.

There was no warmth in his voice. The temperature in the lobby seemed to drop twenty degrees. Even the hotel manager, who had been hovering nervously a few yards away, stepped back, sensing the lethal shift in the billionaire's demeanor.

"Yes, my engagement!" Elena snapped, emboldened by her own anger, completely blind to the warning signs in Julian’s eyes. "Choose, Julian. Her or me. Right now."

Julian slowly rose to his feet. He towered over Elena, his expression a mask of chilling, terrifying calm. He carefully placed the silver hairpin into his jacket pocket, right over his heart, before turning his full, undivided attention back to his fiancée.

"Elena," Julian said, his voice deadly quiet. "You have spent the last three years reminding me of the importance of breeding, of family legacy, of pure bloodlines."

"W-What?" Elena stammered, finally sensing the danger, her confidence wavering. "What does that have to do with this—this garbage?"

"Everything," Julian replied. He reached out and gently scooped little Lily up into his arms. The child gasped, clutching onto his jacket collar out of fear, but Julian held her securely, marveling at how impossibly light she was—a featherweight existence nearly crushed by a cruel world.

He looked down at Elena one last time, a look of utter pity and contempt.

"As for our engagement," Julian said clearly, ensuring every word cut like a razor blade, "consider it terminated. Security, escort Miss Vance off the premises. And make sure she never sets foot in any property owned by Vance Global Holdings again."
