Chapter 10: Shadows on the Estate

Back at the Westchester estate, the afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the manicured lawns. Inside the sprawling guest suite, little Lily sat propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows, nibbling cautiously on a bowl of fresh fruit and warm soup provided by the estate chef.
Nurse Sarah stood nearby, smiling warmly. "How is it, Lily? Do you like it?"
Lily nodded shyly, her large, dark eyes looking much brighter than they had the night before. The bruises on her face were fading under the care of medical salves, and she was dressed in a soft, cream-colored cashmere sweater that Julian had sent Marcus to purchase from a high-end children's boutique in the city.
The heavy oak door swung open quietly, and Julian walked in. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up his shirtsleeves as he approached the bed with an air of gentle caution that contrasted sharply with the ruthless corporate warlord he had been just hours earlier at headquarters.
"Hey, princess," Julian said softly, pulling up a velvet armchair and sitting down beside her bed. "How are you feeling today?"
"I'm good, Mr. Julian," Lily whispered, clutching her wooden box of hairpins, which now sat safely on the bedside table. "Is... is the bad lady coming back?"
"Never," Julian promised, his voice firm and absolute. "She’s gone. And the man who hurt our family is gone too. You are safe here, Lily. For as long as you live, no one will ever touch you again."
Lily looked at him for a long moment, studying his face with the intuitive wisdom of a child who had grown up too fast. Slowly, a small, tentative smile broke through her melancholy features. She reached out her small hand, her fingers gently brushing against his sleeve.
"You look like my mommy," she whispered.
Julian felt a lump rise in his throat—a sensation he hadn't experienced since he was a frightened little boy hiding in the dark. He reached out and gently covered her small hand with his own large palm.
"I know, Lily," he said, blinking back the sudden warmth in his eyes. "I know."
Downstairs in the security control room, Marcus stood before a wall of multi-split security monitors displaying every angle of the sprawling estate. The perimeter sensors showed absolute peace: green lights glowing across the miles of wooded acreage.
Except for one.
On monitor fourteen, focused on the outermost northern perimeter gate near the old service road, a subtle anomaly flickered. A single thermal signature—a vehicle parked just outside the sensor range, its lights completely extinguished in the deep shadows of the ancient oak trees.
Marcus zoomed in, his trained eyes narrowing as he spotted the faint glint of a pair of binoculars reflecting the moonlight from inside the parked car.
Whoever was out there wasn't a tourist. And they had been watching the estate since the moment Julian and Lily had returned.
May you like
Marcus reached down and pressed the intercom button connecting directly to Julian’s private study.
"Mr. Vance," Marcus said quietly, his voice tense. "We have company. And I don't think they're here to congratulate you on your victory."
