Chapter 15: The Secret Vault Beneath the Estate

Two hours later, the dead operatives had been quietly cleared from the grounds, and the estate had returned to its fortified lockdown state. Inside the mansion, Lily was fast asleep in her secure, heavily guarded suite, completely unaware of the lethal drama that had unfolded just outside her window.
Julian sat alone in the deep sub-basement of the estate—a classified, blast-proof panic room that his adoptive father had supposedly built during the Cold War. But Julian knew the truth now. This room hadn't been built by the Vances. It had been constructed by the original Sterling patriarchs decades ago as a hidden archive for the family's most dangerous secrets.
He stood before a massive, heavy iron wall safe built into the concrete foundation. Using a mechanical key he had recovered from Arthur’s hidden compartment at headquarters, combined with his own biometric thumbprint, Julian unlocked the vault.
The heavy steel door swung open, revealing rows of old leather-bound ledgers, cipher keys, and a heavy wooden lockbox resting on a velvet pedestal.
Julian reached inside and picked up the wooden box. He flipped the brass latch and opened the lid.
Inside lay a collection of documents that predated the "tragic" plane crash by twenty years—birth certificates, adoption decrees, and a handwritten diary belonging to his biological father, the late Duke of Sterling.
Julian picked up the journal, flipping past yellowed pages filled with elegant fountain-pen handwriting, until his eyes caught a chilling entry dated just three days before the family's supposed demise:
"If you are reading this, Julian, it means the council has breached our inner circle. Arthur has betrayed us for a seat at their table. The Sterling bloodline is too powerful to be destroyed outright, so they will scatter us, fake our deaths, and erase our names from history. Protect your sister at all costs. The silver hairpin is not just a crest—it is the key to the vault containing the global evidence of their corruption. They will stop at nothing to take it back."
Julian’s hand trembled slightly as he closed the journal.
He reached back into the wooden box and felt a false bottom beneath the papers. He pressed the hidden wooden spring, and the secret compartment popped open.
Nestled inside was a heavy, platinum master key embedded with a glowing, encrypted digital chip—the master access key to the global Sterling financial network, capable of exposing every hidden shadow government syndicate that had manipulated the world’s markets for half a century.

Julian held the key in his palm, the cold metal grounding him as a dangerous, unbreakable resolve settled over his features.
The game of corporate defense was over. It was time to hunt the hunters.
