Chapter 11: The Perimeter Breach

The secure intercom speaker on Julian’s mahogany desk crackled with Marcus’s low, urgent voice.
"We have company, Mr. Vance," Marcus repeated, the subtle tension in his tone cutting sharply through the quiet ambiance of the study. "And I don't think they're here to congratulate you on your victory."
Julian stood up from his leather chair without a second's hesitation. The brief sense of peace he had felt upstairs with Lily evaporated instantly, replaced by the razor-sharp instincts of a man who had spent a decade surviving the brutal corporate wars of Manhattan.
"Type of vehicle?" Julian asked, his voice steady and cold.
"Unmarked matte-black SUV. Parked half a mile down the old service road, right outside the thermal sensor grid," Marcus replied from the security bunker. "No plates visible. They’re running dark—no headlights, no interior cabin lights. But my optics picked up a high-end parabolic listening device pointed directly at the east wing guest suite."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. The east wing guest suite was where Lily was currently resting.
"How many?" Julian demanded, walking over to the biometric wall safe behind his desk. He punched in a six-digit code and pressed his thumb against the glass scanner. The heavy steel door popped open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing a custom-fitted shelf housing a sleek, military-grade tactical submachine pistol and extra magazine clips.
"At least three operatives," Marcus answered. "Professional grade. They aren't local thugs or tabloid photographers. They bypassed our outer perimeter motion tripwires using frequency dampeners. If I hadn't spotted their thermal footprint manually, we wouldn't even know they were sitting at our doorstep."
Julian grabbed the weapon, checked the load with a practiced, mechanical click, and tucked it securely into the holster beneath his left arm, buttoning his vest over it.
"Lock down the estate," Julian ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Activate the interior reinforced steel shutters on every window of the main house. Move Dr. Henderson and the medical staff down to the sub-basement bunker. And Marcus?"

"Sir?"
"Do not engage them yet. Let them think they're invisible. I want to see who’s paying for a hit squad on my front lawn."
