Chapter 9: The Emergency Vote

Chapter 9: The Emergency Vote

Claire looked at the clock.

7:42 p.m.

The board meeting had been moved to eight o'clock the following morning.

Less than thirteen hours away.

Whoever was orchestrating the conspiracy had accelerated the plan.

That meant only one thing.

They were afraid.

Olivia placed a printed email on the desk.

"It was sent twenty minutes ago."

Claire read it carefully.

Emergency Meeting of the Board of Directors

Agenda: Confirmation of Executive Succession and Ratification of Temporary Ownership Transfer.

Temporary.

The word was carefully chosen.

If challenged later, they could claim it had only been an interim measure.

Professional.

Calculated.

Illegal.

Claire looked up.

"Who approved the meeting notice?"

Olivia hesitated.

"The corporate secretary."

Claire frowned.

"Margaret Ellis?"

Olivia nodded.

"She signed the notice herself."

Claire didn't answer immediately.

Margaret had worked for the Bennett family for twenty-eight years.

She had taught Claire how board procedures worked.

She believed in rules more than anyone Claire had ever met.

Something didn't fit.

"Arrange a meeting."

"Tonight?"

"Now."

Margaret Ellis was still in her office when Claire arrived.

Stacks of legal binders covered her desk.

She looked up with tired eyes.

"I was wondering when you'd come."

Claire closed the door behind her.

"Did you authorize tomorrow's meeting?"

Margaret removed her glasses.

"I signed the notice."

"But I didn't authorize the meeting."

Claire's expression didn't change.

"Explain."

Margaret reached into her desk drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

"I've been waiting to give you this in person."

Inside was a copy of the board resolution ordering the emergency meeting.

The signature authorizing it belonged to...

Grant Bennett.

Claire frowned.

"Grant isn't a director."

"I know."

"He has no authority to call a board meeting."

"I know."

"So why issue the notice?"

Margaret met Claire's eyes.

"Because refusing would have warned them."

Claire paused.

"Them?"

Margaret nodded almost imperceptibly.

"They've been watching everyone."

A chill ran through the room.

Claire leaned forward.

"Who?"

Margaret's voice dropped to barely a whisper.

"I don't know."

"But every time someone questioned the paperwork..."

She stopped.

"What happened?"

"They disappeared."

Claire stared at her.

"Disappeared?"

"One resigned."

"Another retired overnight."

"A third withdrew from the board after receiving anonymous threats."

Margaret swallowed.

"I have grandchildren."

Claire understood.

Fear had become another weapon.

At 11:30 p.m., Marcus called.

"We've identified Blackwood's building."

"Go on."

"It isn't just office space."

"What is it?"

"It's the headquarters of a private consulting firm."

"Name?"

Marcus hesitated.

"There isn't one."

"No company sign."

"No public website."

"No employees listed."

Claire looked out her office window.

"A front."

"That's what we think."

Marcus continued.

"We also tracked Daniel Mercer."

"What did you find?"

"He didn't go home."

"Where is he?"

"St. Gabriel Medical Center."

Claire frowned.

"Is he sick?"

"No."

"Then why is he there?"

Marcus lowered his voice.

"His wife has advanced Alzheimer's."

Claire closed her eyes.

Daniel had spent every evening at the hospital for nearly a year.

Marcus continued.

"The medical bills are enormous."

Claire understood immediately.

Someone hadn't recruited Daniel.

They had leverage.

Before dawn, Claire sat alone in her office reviewing every piece of evidence.

The forged signatures.

The fake will.

The altered financial records.

The anonymous messages.

The hidden flash drive.

Her father's letter.

Individually, each pointed toward fraud.

Together...

They pointed toward something much larger.

Her phone buzzed again.

The familiar sender.

Unknown Number

Someone inside tomorrow's meeting is wearing a wire. Don't reveal everything at once. Let them report incomplete information.

The message vanished.

Claire leaned back.

Whoever the anonymous ally was...

They were risking everything.

8:00 a.m.

The executive boardroom was full.

Twelve directors.

Corporate counsel.

Grant Bennett.

Vanessa, seated quietly against the wall as an "observer."

And, standing near the windows...

The silver-haired man everyone simply called Blackwood.

Claire stopped.

"Who invited him?"

Grant answered smoothly.

"He's an external strategic advisor."

Claire looked around the room.

"I don't remember approving that."

Blackwood smiled politely.

"You don't have to."

His voice.

The same voice from the recovered recording.

The same calm, measured tone.

Now Claire finally heard it clearly.

"I know you."

The room fell silent.

Blackwood inclined his head.

"I'm flattered."

"You attended my father's retirement dinner."

"A long time ago."

"You were never introduced."

"No."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"My father kept you away from me on purpose."

For the first time, Blackwood's smile faded.

Only slightly.

Margaret called the meeting to order.

"The first item is confirmation of temporary executive authority."

Grant stood.

"Given Claire's extended absence, the company required stable leadership."

Claire didn't interrupt.

She simply listened.

Grant continued.

"Every action taken was for the protection of Bennett Strategic Holdings."

Several directors nodded uncertainly.

Then Blackwood spoke.

"Stability creates confidence."

His voice carried quiet authority.

"No investor benefits from uncertainty."

Claire finally stood.

"I have one question."

Blackwood gestured politely.

"Please."

Claire held up two documents.

"My father's original will."

"And the forged version."

Several board members leaned forward.

Grant's face lost color.

Claire laid both documents on the conference table.

"Before anyone votes..."

She looked directly at every director.

"...I'd like to know why this company has been conducting business using forged legal documents."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then one director spoke.

"Forged?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

She placed a second folder on the table.

"My forged signature."

Then another.

"Fraudulent ownership transfers."

Then another.

"Altered board authorizations."

The room erupted into confused whispers.

Grant looked toward Blackwood.

Almost instinctively.

Claire noticed.

So did several directors.

Blackwood remained perfectly composed.

"Serious accusations."

Claire smiled faintly.

"I'm just getting started."

She reached into her briefcase.

Everyone expected another stack of documents.

Instead...

She removed a small digital recorder.

"I thought the board might enjoy hearing a conversation recorded four nights ago."

Grant's eyes widened.

Blackwood's expression remained unreadable.

Claire pressed Play.

Grant's voice filled the room.

"...we only need until Monday."

Then came Blackwood's unmistakable reply.

"You underestimate Claire Bennett."

Every face in the room turned toward the silver-haired man.

For the first time since Claire had returned home...

Blackwood looked genuinely surprised.

Not because the recording existed.

May you like

But because he realized something far more dangerous.

Someone inside his own operation had betrayed him.
