Chapter 6: The Man in the Gray SUV

Chapter 6: The Man in the Gray SUV

Claire didn't move.

She watched the gray SUV through a narrow gap in the curtain, careful not to reveal herself.

The vehicle was parked beneath a large oak tree across the street.

No government plates.

No neighborhood parking permit.

Just a clean, unremarkable SUV that blended into the suburban landscape.

Professional.

Emma tugged gently on Claire's sleeve.

"Mom?"

Claire forced a reassuring smile.

"Go finish your drawing, sweetheart."

"Okay."

Emma skipped back to the dining room, unaware that her innocent comment had just changed everything.

Claire took out her encrypted phone.

One secure text.

To: Marcus Hale

Gray SUV. Northeast corner of the property. Unknown occupants. Verify. Do not approach unless necessary.

The reply came less than thirty seconds later.

Not ours. Stay inside. We're moving.

Claire's pulse remained steady.

If Marcus didn't recognize the vehicle, someone else was running surveillance.

The question was—

Who?

Fifteen minutes later, headlights appeared at the end of the street.

The gray SUV pulled away before Marcus's team arrived.

It disappeared without speeding.

Without panic.

As if the driver had anticipated exactly when to leave.

Marcus entered through the back door.

He carried no visible badge.

Only a messenger bag.

Emma looked up from her drawing.

"The police uncle!"

Marcus smiled warmly.

"Hello again, Emma."

Grant walked into the room at that exact moment.

He stopped.

His face paled.

"Who are you?"

Marcus extended a hand.

"Marcus Hale."

Grant didn't shake it.

"And what exactly are you doing in my house?"

Claire answered before Marcus could.

"He's here because I invited him."

Grant looked from one to the other.

"Is he your lawyer?"

"No."

"A private investigator?"

Claire calmly met his eyes.

"He's helping me verify a few things."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"I don't like strangers around my daughter."

Marcus spoke for the first time.

"I don't like children being lied to."

Silence filled the room.

Grant looked ready to argue.

Instead, he grabbed his keys.

"I'll be in my office."

The door slammed a moment later.

Marcus waited until the footsteps faded.

"He rattled easily."

Claire nodded.

"He's under pressure."

Marcus opened his bag and placed several photographs on the kitchen table.

"They're from the restaurant."

Claire studied them.

Grant.

Vanessa.

A man she didn't recognize.

Mid-fifties.

Expensive tailored suit.

Silver hair.

No expression.

Marcus pointed to him.

"Our facial recognition couldn't identify him."

Claire looked closer.

"No records?"

"Nothing."

"No driver's license."

"No corporate profile."

"No passport."

She frowned.

"That's impossible."

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly."

The man seemed to exist...

Without officially existing.

Claire turned the photograph over.

Written in pen was a single word.

Blackwood.

"Where did this name come from?" she asked.

"Grant called him that once during lunch."

Claire memorized it.

Blackwood.

Not a first name.

Not necessarily a last name.

Possibly a code name.

Later that evening, Claire finally examined the flash drive again.

This time she ignored the financial records.

Instead, she searched the hidden system files.

Most people never looked there.

Claire always did.

After several minutes, she found something unusual.

A deleted folder.

She recovered it.

The title appeared on the screen.

Legacy_Audio

Inside were seventeen encrypted recordings.

The first sixteen were corrupted.

Only the final recording remained intact.

Date:

Three nights before Claire returned home.

She pressed play.

Grant's voice filled the room.

"...she'll never know."

Another voice answered.

Male.

Calm.

Older.

"You underestimate Claire Bennett."

Grant laughed nervously.

"She's halfway around the world."

"Distance doesn't make someone harmless."

"We only need until Monday."

A long pause followed.

Then the older man spoke again.

"If she discovers the transfer before it's finalized..."

Grant interrupted.

"She won't."

The reply came cold and measured.

"You'd better pray you're right."

The recording ended.

Claire replayed the final sentence twice.

She had heard that voice before.

Not recently.

Years ago.

At a charity gala.

Her father's retirement dinner.

Board meetings.

The voice belonged to someone who had known the Bennett family for decades.

She just couldn't place the name.

Not yet.

At 8:30 p.m., Olivia called.

"I found another discrepancy."

Claire switched to speakerphone.

"I'm listening."

"The board meeting agenda."

"What about it?"

"It wasn't prepared by Corporate Governance."

Claire sat upright.

"Who prepared it?"

Olivia hesitated.

"The chairman."

Claire froze.

"That's impossible."

"The chairman resigned last year."

"I know."

Olivia's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Someone has been signing documents using his credentials."

Claire immediately opened another file from the flash drive.

Chairman authorization.

Signature.

Date.

Everything matched.

Except...

The former chairman had died eighteen months earlier.

Claire slowly leaned back in her chair.

Someone had forged her signature.

Someone had stolen Daniel Mercer's credentials.

And now...

Someone was using the identity of a dead chairman to authorize corporate actions.

This wasn't an impulsive fraud.

It was an operation planned months—perhaps years—in advance.

Just before midnight, Claire heard movement downstairs.

She quietly stepped into the hallway.

The house was dark.

A figure stood inside Grant's office.

Not Grant.

Not Vanessa.

The person wore black gloves and searched frantically through the desk drawers.

Claire remained perfectly still.

The intruder muttered under his breath.

"It has to be here..."

He was looking for something.

The hidden flash drive.

He didn't know Claire had already found it.

The intruder suddenly stopped.

Very slowly...

He turned toward the doorway.

Toward Claire.

Neither of them spoke.

For one long heartbeat, they stared at each other in complete silence.

May you like

Then the masked man smiled.

As if he had expected her to be there.
