Chapter 2: An Unwelcome Celebration

Chapter 2: An Unwelcome Celebration
No one moved.
The silence stretched across the living room until one of the guests awkwardly set down a champagne glass. Another quietly reached for a purse, suddenly realizing they had walked into something far more serious than an engagement celebration.
Grant finally forced a laugh.
"Everyone, could you give us a few minutes?"
His voice sounded confident, but Claire recognized the tension behind it.

One by one, the guests slipped toward the patio, whispering among themselves. Vanessa stayed exactly where she was, folding her arms as if she had every right to remain.
Claire ignored her.
She crouched in front of Emma.
"Sweetheart, look at me."
Emma hesitated before raising her eyes.
The little girl's smile was gone. She looked exhausted.
Claire gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"Did anyone hurt you?"
Emma swallowed.
She glanced toward Vanessa before looking back at her mother.
"I... I don't want to get anyone mad."
Claire felt her heart tighten.
"You won't," she said softly. "Not anymore."
Emma wrapped both arms around Claire's neck.
"I missed you."
Claire held her daughter close.
"I missed you too."
Grant cleared his throat.
"Claire, can we talk privately?"
She stood, still holding Emma's hand.
"No. Whatever you have to say can be said in front of our daughter."
Grant sighed.
"This isn't what it looks like."
Claire slowly looked around the room.
The framed family portraits had been replaced.
Fresh flowers decorated every table.
A banner reading Congratulations hung above the fireplace.
Vanessa was wearing Grant's robe.
"It looks exactly like what it is."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You've been gone for weeks. Grant moved on."
Claire finally looked directly at her.
"Did he tell you he could give this house away?"
Vanessa smiled.
"He doesn't need permission."
Claire's expression never changed.
"Interesting."
Grant quickly interrupted.
"Claire, let's not make this harder than it already is."
"Harder?"
She laughed quietly.
"I came home expecting to celebrate my daughter's birthday."
Her eyes settled on Emma's bruised wrist.
"Instead, I found my child terrified."
Grant immediately shook his head.
"You're overreacting."
"I'm asking one question."
Claire's voice became calm enough to make Grant nervous.
"Who put those bruises on her?"
No one answered.
Emma squeezed Claire's hand tighter.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"She fell."
Claire turned to Emma.
"Is that true?"
Emma stared at the floor.
Several seconds passed.
Then she slowly shook her head.
"No."
The room fell silent again.
Grant's face paled.
"Emma—"
"I told Daddy," the little girl whispered. "But he said I should listen better."
Claire closed her eyes for one brief moment.
When she opened them again, every trace of warmth had disappeared.
She had interviewed criminals who lied more convincingly than Grant.
She had spent fifteen years learning how to read people.
She knew guilt when she saw it.
"I'm taking Emma upstairs," Claire said.
Grant stepped into her path.
"You can't just walk back in here making demands."
Claire looked at the hand blocking her way.
"Move."
"No."
For the first time since arriving home, Claire reached into her jacket.
Grant stiffened.
Vanessa gasped.
Claire calmly removed a leather wallet and opened it.
Inside was her federal law enforcement badge.
"I've spent the last six weeks dismantling an organized crime ring," she said evenly. "Trust me when I tell you this is the least intimidating confrontation I've had all month."
Grant slowly lowered his hand.
Claire took Emma upstairs without another word.
Emma's bedroom looked different.
Half the toys were missing.
The butterfly curtains had been replaced with plain gray ones.
Even the family photos on the nightstand were gone.
Claire opened Emma's dresser.
Most of her favorite clothes had disappeared.
"Mom?"
Claire turned.
Emma was sitting on the edge of the bed clutching the stuffed elephant Claire had brought home.
"Are you leaving again?"
Claire knelt in front of her.
She placed both hands gently on Emma's shoulders.
"No."
Her voice was steady.
"I'm not leaving you again."
Downstairs, she could hear Grant and Vanessa arguing in hushed voices.
For the first time that evening, Claire allowed herself to think beyond the betrayal.

Something much bigger was happening inside this house.
And before the night was over, she intended to uncover every secret.
