Chapter 18: The Missing Child

Chapter 18: The Missing Child

Claire drove faster than she ever had before.

The mountain roads blurred beneath the tires as Marcus followed close behind with flashing emergency lights hidden behind the grille of his SUV.

Neither of them spoke.

Every second mattered.

Emma had disappeared.

That was all Claire could think about.

When they reached the Bennett estate, the front gate stood open.

Federal agents were already everywhere.

Crime scene tape stretched across the driveway.

Forensic photographers documented every room.

Marcus met the supervising agent before Claire even stepped out of the vehicle.

"What happened?"

The agent looked shaken.

"There are no signs of forced entry."

Claire froze.

"What about the surveillance cameras?"

"They were disabled."

"When?"

"Exactly 2:13 this afternoon."

Claire's heart sank.

The attack on Arthur's cabin.

The cameras.

The timing.

It had all been coordinated.

Claire walked into the house.

Emma's blue backpack still rested beside the staircase.

Her favorite shoes were neatly lined up near the front door.

Nothing looked disturbed.

Until Claire reached the kitchen.

On the dining table sat Emma's stuffed elephant.

Claire picked it up carefully.

Tucked beneath one of its ears was a folded note.

Only four words.

Check the music box.

Marcus frowned.

"Music box?"

Claire didn't answer.

She was already running upstairs.

Emma's bedroom looked untouched.

The pink curtains.

The storybooks.

The family photographs.

Everything remained exactly where Claire had left it.

Except for one object.

A wooden ballerina music box sat open on the dresser.

Claire slowly wound the key.

The familiar melody began to play.

Halfway through the song...

A tiny compartment sprang open beneath the ballerina.

Inside was a USB drive.

And another handwritten note.

Your father prepared for this too.

Claire stared at it.

Jonathan Bennett had hidden yet another piece of evidence.

Years before Emma had even owned the music box.

Marcus inserted the USB drive into his encrypted laptop.

One video file appeared.

Recorded eighteen months earlier.

Jonathan Bennett sat behind his office desk.

He looked tired.

Older.

As though he already knew time was running out.

Claire pressed Play.

"Claire..."

Jonathan began.

"If you're watching this..."

"...they've taken someone you love."

Claire closed her eyes.

He knew.

He had known.

Jonathan continued.

"Listen carefully."

"They won't hurt the child."

"Not immediately."

"They never begin with violence."

"They begin with negotiation."

Marcus exchanged a glance with Claire.

Jonathan went on.

"They'll offer an exchange."

"The archive."

"The witnesses."

"The evidence."

"They'll ask for all of it."

Claire whispered,

"And if I refuse?"

Almost as though he heard her, Jonathan answered.

"They'll convince you that one life matters more than justice."

The screen briefly flickered.

Then Jonathan leaned closer to the camera.

"That's how they win."

The recording ended.

Silence filled Emma's bedroom.

Marcus finally spoke.

"He predicted everything."

Claire nodded slowly.

"My father wasn't reacting."

"He was planning."

At that moment, Claire's encrypted phone rang.

Not a message.

A live call.

Unknown number.

Marcus immediately activated the trace software.

Claire answered.

"This is Claire."

A familiar calm voice replied.

"Good evening."

Charles Whitmore.

Claire's expression hardened.

"Where's my daughter?"

Charles sounded almost offended.

"Emma is perfectly safe."

"If you touch her—"

"I won't."

He interrupted gently.

"I have grandchildren too."

Claire nearly laughed.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"I expect you to listen."

Marcus silently counted down the trace.

Thirty seconds.

Charles continued.

"You've caused considerable disruption."

"You forged legal documents."

"I corrected an administrative problem."

"You destroyed families."

"I preserved stability."

Claire's voice turned cold.

"You murdered my father."

Silence.

For the first time...

Charles didn't answer immediately.

Finally he spoke.

"I wasn't there."

Claire caught it instantly.

Not I didn't do it.

Only...

I wasn't there.

A carefully chosen denial.

Marcus held up three fingers.

Three seconds left.

Claire kept Charles talking.

"What do you want?"

"The journal."

"The witness files."

"The archive backup."

"And Arthur Sinclair."

Claire stared at the floor.

"You want everything."

"I want balance restored."

Marcus's laptop chimed.

Trace complete.

He wrote an address on his notepad.

Union Station – Track 11

Claire nodded almost imperceptibly.

Charles spoke again.

"Bring the items tomorrow."

"Come alone."

Claire answered without hesitation.

"I'll think about it."

Charles chuckled softly.

"No."

"You'll come."

"Because you're your father's daughter."

The line went dead.

Marcus immediately called tactical command.

"We have a location."

Claire stopped him.

"Wait."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

"That wasn't the real location."

He looked confused.

"The trace was successful."

Claire shook her head.

"Charles knew we'd trace the call."

"So?"

"He wanted us to."

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

"A decoy."

Claire nodded.

"The question is..."

She looked down at Emma's stuffed elephant still clutched in her hands.

"...what did he actually want us to notice?"

She absentmindedly squeezed the elephant.

Something inside felt hard.

Not stuffing.

Claire carefully opened a hidden seam along its back.

Inside was another tiny envelope.

Marcus stared.

"Your father again?"

Claire unfolded the note.

Only one sentence appeared.

When they ask you to come alone... never believe they're talking to you.

Claire read it twice.

Then looked toward Emma's empty bed.

A realization struck her with terrifying clarity.

Charles hadn't been negotiating with Claire.

He had been sending a message to someone else.

Someone close enough...

To hear every word Claire said.

Someone inside the investigation itself.

Claire slowly looked around the room.

Federal agents.

Forensic technicians.

Marcus.

Everyone.

For the first time since Emma disappeared...

Claire realized the leak wasn't inside Bennett Strategic Holdings anymore.

It was inside the task force.

May you like

And whoever that mole was...

Had just listened to every plan they had made.
