Chapter 4: The First Move

Chapter 4: The First Move
Claire didn't sleep.
She spent the remaining hours before dawn reviewing every file on the flash drive, documenting each one without altering the originals. Years in federal investigations had taught her a simple rule.
Never touch evidence.
Preserve it.
The forged documents were sophisticated. Whoever had created them had copied her signature with remarkable precision.
Remarkable.

But not perfect.
A slight variation in the pressure points.
A missing flourish at the end of her surname.
Tiny flaws invisible to most people.
Not invisible to Claire.
She photographed every page with her secure evidence scanner before encrypting multiple backups.
If someone tried to destroy the flash drive, it wouldn't matter anymore.
The evidence already existed in three separate locations.
At exactly 5:47 a.m., her encrypted phone buzzed again.
Unknown Number
Check the signature timestamps. They were created after your military security token was reported active overseas. Whoever filed them forgot one detail.
The message vanished.
Claire immediately reopened the forged transfer agreement.
She compared the filing time with her deployment records.
The document claimed she had digitally approved the transfer at 9:18 a.m. Eastern Time.
At that exact moment, she had been inside a secured federal operations center nearly six thousand miles away.
No civilian communication devices had been permitted.
No electronic signatures could possibly have been generated from her credentials.
Someone had manufactured impossible evidence.
Claire smiled for the first time in days.
Whoever planned this operation had been careful.
Just not careful enough.
The smell of coffee drifted through the house.
Downstairs, Vanessa was setting the breakfast table as though nothing unusual had happened.
She wore one of Claire's old silk robes.
Claire noticed it immediately.
"So that's where it went."
Vanessa looked down at the robe before forcing an awkward smile.
"I thought no one was using it."
Claire calmly poured herself a cup of coffee.
"You thought wrong."
Grant entered the kitchen, looking exhausted.
"We don't have to fight every minute."
Claire stirred her coffee.
"I'm not fighting."
She looked around the room.
"I'm observing."
Emma quietly walked downstairs holding her stuffed elephant.
The little girl stopped when she saw Vanessa sitting in Claire's chair.
Her chair.
Emma hesitated.
Vanessa smiled brightly.
"Come here, sweetheart."
Emma didn't move.
Instead, she walked around Vanessa and stood beside Claire.
"Mom..."
Claire gently placed a hand on her daughter's shoulder.
"I'm here."
Emma whispered so softly only Claire could hear.
"Daddy said you weren't coming home anymore."
The room fell silent.
Claire slowly looked at Grant.
"You told her that?"
Grant swallowed.
"I... I was trying to prepare her."
"For what?"
His answer never came.
At nine o'clock, Claire left the house.
She wasn't going to a divorce lawyer.
She was going somewhere far more important.
Bennett Strategic Holdings.
The thirty-eight-story headquarters dominated the downtown skyline.
Claire hadn't walked through its front doors in nearly a year.
Yet every employee still knew exactly who she was.
The receptionist stood so quickly her chair rolled backward.
"Mrs. Bennett..."
Claire offered a polite smile.
"Good morning."
Within seconds, whispers spread across the lobby.
"She's back."
"I thought she was overseas."
"Didn't Grant say—"
The conversations stopped as Claire entered the executive elevator.
When the doors opened on the top floor, she found an unexpected sight.
Her executive office had been occupied.
Vanessa's name sat on the assistant's temporary directory.
Family Relations Consultant.
Claire stared at it for a long moment.
Then she walked inside.
Everything had changed.
Her photographs were gone.
Her books had disappeared.
Even the framed company charter signed by her late father had been removed from the wall.
Only one thing remained.
Her father's old brass compass.
It sat alone on the corner of the desk.
Exactly where he had always kept it.
Claire picked it up.
Engraved beneath the glass were the words he had repeated throughout her childhood.
Integrity is the only direction worth following.
A nervous voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Mrs. Bennett?"
Claire turned.
Her longtime executive assistant, Olivia Chen, stood in the doorway.
She looked relieved.
And terrified.
"I didn't know if you'd actually come."
Claire closed the compass.
"Tell me everything."
Olivia shut the office door before speaking.
"They've been replacing people."
"Who?"
"Anyone loyal to you."
"How many?"
"Eight executives."
Claire's expression remained calm.
"Voluntary resignations?"
Olivia slowly shook her head.
"No."
"They were pressured."
Claire walked toward the windows overlooking the city.
"And the board?"
"They haven't met."
Claire frowned.
"Impossible."
"They were told you approved emergency proxy voting."
Claire turned sharply.
"I approved nothing."
"I know."
Olivia reached into her briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
"I've been waiting for you."
Inside was a certified copy of an emergency board resolution.
Claire scanned the first page.
Then the second.
Then the final signature page.
There it was again.
Her forged signature.
Authorizing temporary control of Bennett Strategic Holdings to Grant Bennett during her "indefinite military absence."
The resolution had passed unanimously.
Based on a lie.
Claire looked up.
"Who drafted this?"
Olivia hesitated.
"I don't know."
"But I know who delivered it."
"Who?"
Olivia took a slow breath.
"The company's outside attorney."
Claire recognized the name instantly.
Daniel Mercer.
He had represented the Bennett family for nearly twenty years.
He had attended her wedding.
He had held Emma as a baby.
Claire closed the folder with deliberate care.
"So even Daniel."
Olivia nodded sadly.
"I'm afraid so."
Claire walked back to her desk and placed the brass compass in its original position.
"Good."
Olivia blinked.
"Good?"
Claire's eyes never left the city skyline.
"I was wondering how high this conspiracy reached."
She picked up her phone.
"Now I know where to start."
Before Olivia could respond, the office television switched on automatically.
Breaking financial news flashed across the screen.
BENNETT STRATEGIC HOLDINGS ANNOUNCES MONDAY OWNERSHIP RESTRUCTURING.
Claire watched the announcement without saying a word.
Then she smiled.
"They've announced their victory."
May you like
She slipped the flash drive into her jacket pocket.
"They just don't realize the investigation has already begun."
