Chapter 7: Face to Face

Chapter 7: Face to Face
The masked man didn't run.
That surprised Claire more than his presence.
Most intruders fled the moment they were discovered.
This one stood perfectly still, his gloved hands resting at his sides as though he had walked into a scheduled meeting instead of breaking into a home.
Neither of them spoke.
The grandfather clock at the end of the hallway ticked loudly in the silence.
Finally, Claire broke it.

"You're late."
The man's head tilted slightly.
"So you know why I'm here."
"I know what you're looking for."
His eyes narrowed behind the black mask.
"Then you also know you should give it back."
Claire folded her arms.
"I don't negotiate with burglars."
For the first time, the man laughed.
A quiet, controlled laugh.
"I'm not a burglar."
"No?"
"I was sent to recover company property."
Claire held his gaze.
"The flash drive belongs to me."
"It belongs to Bennett Strategic Holdings."
"It was hidden beneath my husband's desk."
The man shrugged.
"Then your husband hid it for the wrong people."
Before Claire could answer, footsteps echoed upstairs.
Emma.
Claire's attention shifted for only a fraction of a second.
It was enough.
The masked man tossed a small metal object toward the hallway floor.
It exploded with a blinding flash.
Claire instinctively shielded her eyes.
By the time her vision cleared, the intruder was gone.
The back door slammed shut.
Marcus Hale arrived less than four minutes later.
His team swept the property while Claire replayed every second of the encounter.
"No fingerprints," one agent reported.
"No footprints either."
Marcus examined the back patio.
"He wore shoe covers."
Claire nodded.
"Professional."
Another agent approached carrying a tiny object sealed inside an evidence bag.
"We found this."
It was the metal cylinder the intruder had thrown.
Marcus studied it carefully.
"Military-grade flash diversion device."
Claire frowned.
"Not commercially available."
"No."
Marcus looked at her.
"Someone with government or military connections supplied him."
Claire looked toward the dark backyard.
"So this just became much bigger."
At dawn, Claire received a call from the attorney Judge Whitaker had recommended.
"Claire Bennett?"
"This is she."
"My name is Evelyn Ross."
"I've been expecting your call."
"I've reviewed the summary Judge Whitaker sent."
Claire walked onto the back porch.
"And?"
"If the documents are authentic..."
"They're forged."
"If you can prove that, this isn't merely corporate fraud."
"What is it?"
"A coordinated criminal enterprise."
Claire remained silent.
Evelyn continued.
"And there's something else."
"I'm listening."
"I recognized one name in the paperwork."
"Which one?"
"Blackwood."
Claire's grip tightened around the phone.
"You know him?"
"No."
"But twenty years ago, I prosecuted a financial conspiracy involving an investment network that used 'Blackwood' as an internal code name."
Claire's pulse quickened.
"What happened to the case?"
"It disappeared."
"Disappeared?"
"The lead witnesses withdrew."
"The evidence vanished."
"The investigation was quietly closed."
Claire looked across the empty street.
"Why?"
"I was never given an explanation."
Later that morning, Bennett Strategic Holdings buzzed with rumors.
Employees whispered as Claire walked through the lobby.
Some smiled with relief.
Others avoided eye contact.
When the elevator doors opened on the executive floor, Olivia rushed toward her.
"You need to see this."
She handed Claire a printed email.
It had been sent to every executive in the company at 7:12 a.m.
From: Grant Bennett
Subject: Leadership Transition
The message thanked everyone for their loyalty and announced that, effective Monday, Grant Bennett would assume full executive authority "following Claire Bennett's voluntary resignation."
Claire read the sentence twice.
Then looked at Olivia.
"I never resigned."
"I know."
Claire smiled faintly.
"They're committing fraud faster than I can document it."
Olivia blinked.
"Should we send a correction?"
"No."
"What?"
Claire folded the paper.
"Let them keep lying."
"The bigger the lie..."
"...the harder the fall."
That afternoon, Marcus called.
"We identified the gray SUV."
Claire immediately stopped walking.
"Who owns it?"
"A shell corporation."
"Registered where?"
"Delaware."
She sighed.
"Of course."
"But we caught a break."
"What kind?"
Marcus emailed her a photograph.
Security camera footage from a gas station.
The gray SUV.
The masked intruder—without his mask.
Claire enlarged the image.
The face was slightly blurred.
But one detail stood out.
A thin white scar running from his left ear to his jawline.
Claire stared at it.
Then memory surfaced.
Afghanistan.
Eight years earlier.
A multinational task force investigating weapons trafficking.
One of the contractors assigned to the mission had the exact same scar.
His name came back to her instantly.
Ethan Cross.
Officially, he had died during an ambush.
Claire whispered the name aloud.
Marcus heard it through the phone.
"You know him?"
"I knew him."
"You said 'knew.'"
"I attended his memorial service."
Marcus fell silent.
After several seconds, he spoke quietly.
"So either the dead are coming back..."
"...or someone wanted the world to believe Ethan Cross was dead."
As evening approached, Claire returned to her office.
The brass compass still sat on the corner of her desk.
She picked it up absentmindedly.
Something felt different.
Heavier.
She turned it over.
There was a tiny scratch near the base that she had never noticed before.
Using a letter opener, she gently pressed against the scratched edge.
A hidden panel sprang open.
Inside was a folded strip of yellowed paper.
Her father's handwriting.
Claire unfolded it carefully.
Only one sentence was written.
If anything happens to me, never trust Blackwood.
Her father had written it nearly ten years earlier.
Long before his sudden heart attack.
Long before the forged signatures.
Long before Grant met Vanessa.
Claire slowly folded the note and slipped it into her pocket.
For the first time, she wondered whether her father's death had truly been as natural as everyone had believed.
Outside her office window, thunder rolled across the city.
Inside, Claire made a silent promise.
May you like
She had come home to save her marriage.
Now she intended to uncover a conspiracy that might have begun a decade before she ever left.
