Chapter 19: The Mole

Chapter 19: The Mole

No one in Emma's bedroom spoke.

Claire folded Jonathan's note and slipped it into her jacket.

Marcus watched her carefully.

"You think the leak is here."

Claire answered with a single nod.

"Not just in the task force."

She looked around the room filled with agents.

"Here."

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Conversations stopped.

Everyone understood what that meant.

If Claire was right...

The kidnapper already knew every tactical response before it happened.

Marcus dismissed everyone except six senior agents.

The bedroom door closed.

He placed his badge on Emma's dresser.

"For the record..."

He looked each person in the eye.

"...no one leaves until we sort this out."

One of the agents frowned.

"You think one of us took the child?"

Marcus answered firmly.

"I think someone passed information."

Claire remained silent.

She wasn't interested in accusations.

She was watching reactions.

One agent looked offended.

Another looked confused.

A third became defensive.

Only one man...

Agent Richard Cole...

Barely reacted at all.

He simply crossed his arms and waited.

Years of interrogation had taught Claire that the calmest person wasn't always innocent.

Sometimes...

He was prepared.

Marcus spread a map across Emma's desk.

"I want everyone's movements from the last forty-eight hours."

Each agent gave a detailed timeline.

Claire listened without interrupting.

Then it was Cole's turn.

"I was assigned to perimeter surveillance yesterday."

"From noon until six."

Marcus nodded.

"Anyone confirm that?"

Cole hesitated.

"My partner rotated off for lunch."

"So you were alone?"

"For about forty minutes."

Claire finally spoke.

"Where did you eat?"

Cole blinked.

"What?"

"Lunch."

"What did you have?"

He answered too quickly.

"Turkey sandwich."

Claire tilted her head.

"From where?"

A pause.

"Gas station."

"Which one?"

Another pause.

"I don't remember."

Claire looked away.

She didn't need another question.

Marcus noticed.

"You think he's lying."

Claire answered quietly.

"I think he's remembering."

Cole's face hardened.

"This is ridiculous."

Claire looked directly at him.

"No."

"What's ridiculous is that every operation we've planned has been compromised."

She took one slow step forward.

"And every compromise happened after you attended the briefing."

The room fell silent.

Cole laughed.

"You have no evidence."

Claire nodded.

"Not yet."

At that moment, Olivia rushed upstairs carrying a tablet.

"Claire."

She looked out of breath.

"I found something."

She handed over the device.

It displayed internal access logs from the federal case management system.

Marcus frowned.

"How did you get those?"

Olivia looked uncomfortable.

"I still have cybersecurity contacts."

Claire scanned the records.

Every classified briefing.

Every witness location.

Every surveillance assignment.

Someone had accessed them repeatedly.

Using Agent Richard Cole's credentials.

Marcus looked at Cole.

"You want to explain this?"

Cole shook his head immediately.

"My account was cloned."

Claire remained calm.

"Possible."

She scrolled further.

Then stopped.

The final login had occurred...

Three minutes after Emma disappeared.

While Cole had supposedly been driving toward the Bennett house.

Marcus's expression darkened.

"You couldn't have logged in from your vehicle."

Cole's confidence finally cracked.

"I..."

He stopped.

Claire noticed.

"You're choosing your next lie."

Suddenly, Cole moved.

Faster than anyone expected.

He shoved one of the agents aside and sprinted toward the hallway.

Marcus tackled him before he reached the stairs.

The two men crashed into the wall.

Cole reached inside his jacket.

Marcus grabbed his wrist.

A small burner phone clattered across the hardwood floor.

Claire picked it up.

The screen illuminated.

One unread message.

Has she agreed to the exchange?

Sent only two minutes earlier.

Marcus looked at Cole.

"Who sent this?"

Cole remained silent.

Claire unlocked the phone using Cole's fingerprint while he struggled against the agents.

The message history appeared.

Hundreds of encrypted conversations.

Most had already self-deleted.

Only the latest remained.

One contact.

No name.

Only a symbol.

A compass.

Claire felt a chill.

The same symbol her father had once carried.

The same symbol The Circle had stolen.

She opened the most recent conversation.

The final outgoing message from Cole read:

Claire found Arthur. Proceeding to Phase Three.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"Arthur was attacked less than twenty minutes later."

Claire nodded.

"They knew immediately."

Cole looked away.

His silence confirmed everything.

Marcus handcuffed him.

"It's over."

Cole smiled for the first time.

"No."

His voice was strangely relaxed.

"You still don't understand."

Claire looked at him.

"Then help me."

Cole laughed softly.

"You think Charles Whitmore gave the orders."

"He did."

"No."

Cole shook his head.

"Charles obeys orders."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"My father was right."

Cole smiled wider.

"The Founder doesn't trust anyone."

Not even Charles.

Claire crouched in front of him.

"Where's Emma?"

Cole met her eyes.

"I don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I wasn't trusted with children."

Claire searched his face.

He wasn't lying.

He genuinely didn't know.

Marcus frowned.

"What was your role?"

Cole answered almost proudly.

"I watched investigators."

"I delayed warrants."

"I redirected surveillance."

"I made sure nobody looked in the right place."

Claire realized something.

Cole had never been the kidnapper.

He had been the blindfold.

Before anyone could ask another question...

Cole suddenly stiffened.

His breathing became uneven.

Marcus immediately noticed.

"Medic!"

Foam appeared at the corner of Cole's mouth.

Claire grabbed the discarded burner phone.

A faint chemical smell lingered on its casing.

She looked at Marcus.

"The phone."

Marcus understood instantly.

"Poison."

Cole had absorbed it through his fingertips when he reached for the device.

Within seconds, his pulse faded.

Paramedics rushed in.

Too late.

Richard Cole died without speaking another word.

The room fell silent once again.

Marcus stared at the burner phone.

"They planned for his capture."

Claire nodded.

"He was never supposed to survive interrogation."

Olivia quietly approached from the doorway.

"Claire..."

She held another envelope.

"This arrived by courier five minutes ago."

No return address.

Inside was a single Polaroid photograph.

Emma sat at a small wooden table.

She looked frightened...

But unharmed.

Today's newspaper lay beside her.

Proof of life.

Written across the bottom in black ink were eight words.

One witness for one child. Midnight. Come alone.

Claire looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then she noticed something almost invisible.

Reflected in the window behind Emma...

Was the outline of a lighthouse.

Not the one on the coast.

A different lighthouse.

Smaller.

Painted red.

Claire whispered,

"I know where she is."

Marcus looked up.

"You recognize it?"

Claire nodded slowly.

"My father took me there once."

She folded the photograph carefully.

"It's the only inland lighthouse in the state."

She looked at the clock.

They had less than five hours.

May you like

And somewhere inside that forgotten lighthouse...

Emma was waiting.
