A faint, rhythmic tone chimed from the terminal.
On the screen, a series of encrypted data packets—dormant for weeks—suddenly began to reconfigure themselves. The decentralized ledger, thought to be permanently locked by the federal seizure protocols, was automatically rerouting through a secondary proxy server located in a neutral jurisdiction.
A line of green text appeared across the dark screen:
SECONDARY PROTOCOL ENGAGED. BACKUP NODE ACTIVE.
In the dim light of the room, a figure sat motionless in an ergonomic leather chair. The right arm was bound tightly in a medical sling, wrapped in sterile white gauze.
