Chapter 7: The Ashes of Sterling Manor

Dawn broke over the rugged New England coastline, casting a pale, bruised light across the smoking ruins of Sterling Manor.

The East Wing—where the subterranean server vault and Clara's sealed studio had once stood—was now a collapsed crater of charred timber, melted steel, and grey ash. The secondary demolition charges Lily had triggered before fleeing had completely gutted the historical foundation of the estate. Fire crews were still hosing down the smoldering embers, sending thick plumes of white steam drifting up into the crisp morning air.

Victor stood on the manicured lawn near the front driveway, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket. Ethan was resting soundly inside a mobile medical unit parked nearby, checked over by paramedics and sleeping peacefully after the most terrifying night of his young life.

Serena walked up beside Victor, handing him a steaming paper cup of black coffee. Her tactical vest was gone, replaced by a simple trench coat over her field clothes, her bandaged shoulder clearly stiff beneath the fabric.

"Federal maritime patrols swept the coast for three miles," Serena said quietly, staring out at the smoking wreckage of the mansion. "They haven't recovered a body yet, but with those rip currents and her severe blood loss, the probability of survival is less than five percent. Victoria Mercer is gone."

"And my Uncle Arthur?" Victor asked, his voice flat and devoid of emotion.

"The rescue teams pulled him out of the cave collapse late last night," Serena replied carefully. "He's currently in custody at a secure federal medical facility. When he wakes up, he’ll be facing federal treason, racketeering, and accessory to murder charges for his role in Clara's death. He’ll never see the outside of a maximum-security prison again."

Victor took a slow sip of the bitter coffee, letting the heat burn his throat. He looked at the place he had called home for most of his life. It was ruined, dismantled, and exposed. But for the first time in three years, the oppressive weight that had suffocated him since Clara’s death felt like it was finally lifting.

"You knew, didn't you?" Victor asked, turning his gaze toward Serena. "Even before you came to this house as my fiancée. You knew Arthur was compromised."

Serena turned to look at him, her expression softening slightly. "We suspected a leak inside the Sterling family inner circle for over a year. When financial assets tied to international shell corporations started routing through Arthur’s private accounts, my unit planted me inside his social circle. I got engaged to you—well, I took the assignment to get close to the estate. I didn't plan on actually caring about what happened here, Victor. I'm sorry for the deception."

"You saved my son's life," Victor said simply. "That cancels out a lot of deception."

Serena offered a small, appreciative nod. "What are you going to do now? The house is destroyed. The estate accounts are locked pending federal asset forfeiture reviews."

Victor looked back toward the medical van where Ethan was sleeping.

"I'm going to pack a bag," Victor said, his voice carrying a new, resolute strength. "I'm going to take my son far away from here. No mansions, no trust funds, no hidden vaults. Just a normal life."

"That sounds like a very good plan," Serena said, stepping back as a black federal SUV rolled up to the driveway to pick her up. She paused at the door, looking back at him. "If you ever need anything... you know my number. The real one this time."

Victor watched as Serena climbed into the vehicle and drove away down the winding estate road, leaving him alone in the quiet morning air.
