Chapter 4: The Subterranean Vault

"Stay back!" Serena yelled, raising her gun as Victor recklessly plunged toward the dark opening of the secret passage.

"She has my son!" Victor roared, shoving Serena’s hand away. "She was in this room while we were talking! She took him right from under our noses!"

"It was a projection," Serena said sharply, grabbing Victor’s tactical vest and pulling him back into the light of the study. "Look at the sofa, Victor! Look closely!"

Victor forced himself to stop and look.

A high-powered miniature holographic lens was hidden inside the frame of the coffee table, casting a faint, residual light field over the cushions. What Victor had seen as his sleeping son over the last ten minutes was a high-resolution, looped optical illusion. Lily had extracted Ethan during the initial smoke outbreak in the East Wing, using the secret tunnels to move him before they even reached the study.

"She played us," Serena cursed under her breath, punching the wooden frame of the desk. "She used the distraction in the East Wing to lead you here, set up the feed, and buy herself a head start."

"Where do those tunnels lead?" Victor asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of rage and terror.

"The old foundation network beneath the estate," Serena said, pulling a digital map of Sterling Manor up on her tablet. "Your grandfather built a series of prohibition-era escape tunnels under the house. They lead down into the sea caves near the old limestone pier."

"Then we aren't waiting for midnight," Victor said, walking over to his wall safe. He entered a six-digit code, pulled out a tactical tactical shotgun and two extra magazines for his handguns. "We go down there now."

"Victor, listen to me," Serena urged, placing herself between him and the hidden passage. "Victoria Mercer isn't a simple kidnapper. She commands an elite PMC group. If my perimeter team was wiped out in less than two minutes without making a sound, she has heavy military support waiting down in those caves."

"I don't care if she has an army," Victor sneered, loading a shell into the chamber with a sharp, heavy clack. "This is my house. I grew up in those tunnels. She knows the tech, but I know the terrain."

Serena stared at him for a long moment, evaluating the raw determination in his eyes. She nodded slowly, reaching into her tactical bag and tossing him a night-vision headset and an encrypted radio earpiece.

"Put these on," she commanded. "We move silent, we move fast. If we see a target, I shoot first. You keep your eyes open for Ethan."

They stepped through the narrow closet entry, plunging into the damp, cold darkness of the estate's subterranean passages.

The air grew heavy with the smell of wet stone, salt water, and mold. The temperature plummeted rapidly as they descended the steep brick staircase that wound deep into the bedrock of the coastal cliffs.

Victor led the way, his night-vision goggles illuminating the dark passageway in stark, emerald green. The walls were constructed of rough-cut granite block, built in the late 19th century.

After five minutes of rapid descent, the narrow tunnel opened up into a massive, cavernous chamber.

The sound of crashing ocean waves echoed from the far end of the cavern. The tide was coming in, filling the lower channels of the sea cave with dark, turbulent water.

"Hold," Serena whispered, tapping Victor’s shoulder.

Through the emerald tint of his goggles, Victor saw movement near the water's edge.

A sleek, black military-grade rigid inflatable boat (RIB) was moored to an ancient wooden dock. Three heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear were loading black equipment cases onto the vessel.

Standing near the edge of the dock was Lily. She was holding Ethan, who was wrapped in a heavy thermal blanket, crying softly.

Next to Lily stood a man in a expensive charcoal suit, holding a satellite uplink terminal.

Victor zoomed in with the digital optic on his scope. When the man in the suit turned toward the light, Victor froze.

The man wasn't a stranger.

It was Arthur Sterling—Victor’s uncle, the senior executor of the Sterling Family Trust, and the man who had raised Victor after his parents died.

"Uncle Arthur..." Victor breathed, his heart shattering into a thousand pieces.

"The Trustee," Serena whispered beside him, her tone deadly quiet. "It was him all along. He authorized Lily’s access to the estate grounds. He handled the financial routing."

Down on the pier, Arthur’s cold voice echoed across the cavern walls, amplified by the natural acoustic arches of the cave.

"Is the transfer sequence ready, Victoria?" Arthur asked, checking a heavy gold pocket watch.

"The biometric link is active," Lily replied, holding a handheld biometric scanner against little Ethan’s thumb. A bright green light flashed on the device, accompanied by a high-pitched beep. "Clara's primary node is unlocked. We have full control of the Architect ledger."

"Good," Arthur said without a trace of emotion. "Once the funds clear the offshore accounts, trigger the demolition charges in the East Wing. Destroy the house, destroy the servers, and leave Victor with nothing."

"And the boy?" Lily asked, looking down at Ethan.

Arthur didn't even hesitate. "He’s a loose end, Victoria. You know what to do with loose ends."

Victor’s blood boiled past the point of restraint.

Forget tactical precision. Forget waiting for backup.

Victor stepped out from the darkness of the upper ledge, bringing his shotgun up and aligning the sights directly with Arthur Sterling’s chest.

"ARTHUR!" Victor’s voice roared through the cavern like a thunderclap.
