Chapter 15: The Final Stand

The blizzard provided the ultimate cover. Moving like ghosts through the swirling snow, Victor and Serena neutralized the exterior perimeter guards with silent precision, dragging the unconscious bodies into the deep snowdrifts before they could trigger an alarm.
Serena approached the massive steel blast door, pulling a specialized electronic decryption tool from her tactical belt and plugging it into the emergency override port.
BEEP... BEEP... CLICK.
The heavy hydraulic locks disengaged with a deep, echoing sound, and the steel door slowly swung inward, venting a cloud of warm, sterile air from deep within the mountain bunker.
"Go," Serena whispered, drawing her weapon.
They slipped inside, moving down a long, white-tiled hallway lined with humming server racks and security cameras. The interior looked like a high-tech laboratory—sleek, minimalist, and terrifyingly advanced.
As they reached the central control hub at the end of the corridor, the heavy glass doors slid open automatically.
Standing in the center of the room, illuminated by the cold blue light of a massive central monitor displaying the active global ledger, was Victoria Mercer.
Her right arm was still bound in a medical sling beneath a dark tactical jacket, her hair pulled back tightly, but her eyes burned with the same unhinged, calculating fire.
She wasn't holding a gun. Instead, she was standing casually beside a high-tech biometric scanning console.
"Welcome, Victor," Victoria said, her voice echoing smoothly through the spacious room. "I was wondering when you would finally show up."
Victor raised his carbine, locking the crosshairs directly on her chest. "Where is it, Victoria? Where's the terminal?"
Victoria let out a soft, mocking laugh, gesturing toward the massive screen behind her. "The terminal is everywhere, Victor. The global ledger is already fully synchronized. Even if you kill me right now, the network will automatically release the asset freeze across every major financial hub in the world in exactly three minutes."
"You lost," Serena said, stepping into the room with her weapon raised, covering the perimeter doors for reinforcements. "Your mercenaries are down. Your compound is breached. There's no escape."
"Escape?" Victoria smiled, stepping slightly to the side to reveal a secondary monitor connected to a secure video feed. "I don't need to escape, Agent Vance. Because I'm not the one holding the final key."
Victor glanced at the video monitor. His blood instantly ran cold.
The screen showed a live feed of a cozy, sunlit room. It was the safe house in New Hampshire. And sitting on the living room floor, playing peacefully with a wooden toy block, was Ethan.
Standing just behind him, holding a quiet, suppressed pistol to the toddler's head, was a mercenary who had apparently bypassed Serena’s deep-cover protection detail hours ago.

"Drop your weapons," Victoria commanded softly, her smile turning venomous. "Or the boy watches his father die first—before he joins his mother in the ground."
Victor stared at the screen, his entire world narrowing down to the small, innocent face of his son. His grip on his carbine loosened, his fingers trembling as the weight of the ultimate choice crashed down upon him.
