Chapter 12: The Secure Protocol

Within an hour of the call, Victor was driving down the winding coastal highway, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. Ethan was safely dropped off with a trusted local neighbor under the guise of an "emergency errand," but Victor’s mind was racing a mile a minute.
He didn't call local law enforcement. Local police couldn't help against an international shadow syndicate. Instead, he dialed the encrypted satellite number Serena had left him before parting ways at the ruined estate.
It rang twice before a crisp, professional voice answered.
"Vance."
"It happened again," Victor said without preamble, his voice tight with controlled anger. "A landline call to an unregistered number at my new home in Maine. A synthesized voice. They know where we are, Serena."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of rapid typing.
"Trace the signal," Serena commanded someone in her background. She came back to Victor with a hard, focused edge in her tone. "Victor, listen to me very carefully. You need to pack up Ethan and move right now. My team has been tracking anomalous data spikes originating from neutral European servers over the past week. We thought it was a ghost ping, but if they've contacted you directly, the network is reactivating."
"How did they find me?" Victor demanded, pulling his SUV off to the side of the coastal road. "I paid cash for this property under a completely shell-isolated trust. My name isn't on any public record!"
"Money and shell corporations don't hide you from quantum-level decryption algorithms," Serena said grimly. "If Victoria Mercer survived that fall into the ocean—and right now, forensics can't confirm either way—she has access to the Architect ledger. And the ledger tracks every digital footprint left by anyone connected to Clara's family line."
"I thought the vault was destroyed when the East Wing was demolished," Victor said.
"The physical servers were destroyed," Serena corrected him. "But the core ledger is decentralized. It lives on a floating dark-web node. As long as someone with the master biometric keys is alive, the network can rebuild itself anywhere in the world."
Victor looked down at his hands, a cold realization settling into his bones. "Ethan."
"Yes," Serena confirmed softly. "Ethan carries the second half of the biometric root key in his genetic profile. As long as he breathes, the syndicate will never stop hunting him—and you."

"What do we do?" Victor asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I'm done running, Serena. If they want a war, I'll give them a war."
"Don't do anything stupid," Serena warned. "Meet me in Boston tonight. Safehouse Delta. I’ll send you the coordinates via encrypted ping. We're going to launch a preemptive strike on the node's origin point."
