Chapter 6: The Abyss of the Open Sea

The gale-force winds whipped across the churning black waves, carrying the blinding salt spray high into the air. The heavy twin outboard engines of the RIB screamed at maximum RPM, but the massive Coast Guard tactical helicopter bearing down on them left nowhere left to run.

"Drop your weapons and step away from the child!" a voice bellowed through the chopper's high-powered sonic amplifier.

Lily stood swaying on the bucking deck, clutching the bleeding wound in her right shoulder with one hand while her left hand gripped little Ethan tightly by the collar of his sweater. The toddler was sobbing uncontrollably, his small face buried against the rough waterproof fabric of her jacket.

"Don't come any closer, Victor!" Lily shrieked, her voice cracking under the pressure. Her once-impeccable composure had completely shattered into psychotic desperation. "One step closer, and I drop him into the propeller wash! You'll never see your precious son again!"

Victor froze, his boots planted wide against the slick rubber floor of the boat. Every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring. He kept his eyes locked on Ethan, fighting the rising panic threatening to choke him.

"Lily, listen to me," Victor shouted over the deafening roar of the overhead rotors. "The federal net is closed. There are three gunships surrounding this area. You can't outrun the coast guard, and you can't swim to shore with a bullet in your shoulder. Let the boy go. We can negotiate!"

"Negotiate?" Lily laughed hysterically, the sound cutting sharply through the storm. "There's nothing left to negotiate! The ledger is synchronized! The accounts are mine!"

She glanced down at the handheld biometric terminal resting on the corner console. The screen was flashing a bright, solid green: TRANSFER COMPLETE. ARCHITECT LEDGER INITIALIZED.

Just as the triumphant grin spread across her pale face, a sharp, metallic click echoed from behind her.

The mercenary holding the carbine rifle suddenly gasped, his eyes going wide. A red laser dot appeared dead-center on his chest armor. From above, dangling on a thick Kevlar fast-rope straight out of the belly of the Coast Guard helicopter, Agent Serena Vance dropped cleanly onto the stern of the pitching boat.

Her combat boots hit the deck with a heavy thud. Before the mercenary could swing his rifle around, Serena executed a devastating sweep kick, sending the soldier flying over the port side rail and straight into the dark abyss of the sea.

"Game over, Victoria," Serena said coldly, her suppressed sidearm leveled straight between Lily's eyes.

Lily’s breath hitched. She looked at Serena, then down at Ethan, and a terrifying calculus flickered behind her wild eyes. If she couldn't keep the empire, she would take away the one thing Victor loved most to ensure her escape.

With a sudden, violent lurch, Lily wrenched Ethan outward over the dark, churning wake of the boat's propeller.

"NO!" Victor roared.

He didn't think. He didn't calculate the risk. He launched his entire body forward across the wet deck like a human missile, tackling Lily with brutal force just as her fingers began to loosen their grip on the boy.

The impact sent all three of them crashing hard onto the aluminum grating of the stern.

Ethan slipped from Lily's grasp, sliding across the wet deck toward the center console. Victor lunged blindly, scooping the crying toddler into his arms and pulling him tight against his chest, rolling protectively over his small body as they took the brunt of the collision.

On the other side of the deck, Lily scrambled frantically to her feet, bleeding profusely, her eyes darting toward the open water. With the federal chopper hovering thirty feet above and Serena closing in, she realized she was completely cornered.

Instead of surrendering, Lily climbed onto the stern rail.

"I'll see you in hell, Victor!" she screamed over the wind.

Without a moment's hesitation, she dove backward off the speeding boat into the dark, violent swell of the ocean.

Serena sprinted to the rail and raised her weapon, tracking the water below, but the violent white foam kicked up by the twin propellers completely swallowed any trace of her.

"Let her go," Victor panted heavily, clutching a trembling Ethan tightly to his chest as he sat up on the deck. "She won't survive five minutes in these currents with that shoulder wound."

Serena lowered her weapon, turning around to watch the Coast Guard helicopter circle wide, dropping a rescue swimmer into the water to secure the floating biometric terminal that Lily had dropped on the deck.

Victor looked down at his son. Ethan was shivering, wet, and terrified, but as he looked up into his father's face, a tiny, watery smile broke through.

"Daddy... you came," Ethan whispered.

"I told you I'd always find you, buddy," Victor choked out, burying his face in his son's hair as the heavy storm finally began to break overhead.
