Chapter 8 - The Woman at the Airfield.

The private airfield outside Frederick was little more than two hangars, one terminal building, and a strip of asphalt cutting through summer grass.

Bianca stood inside the terminal with a canvas travel bag at her feet.

She had traded the yellow dress for loose black pants, white sneakers, and a gray sweater that did nothing to hide her pregnancy.

Her hands would not stop trembling.

For the first time since the courthouse, there was no Harrison beside her telling her what would happen next.

There was only Daniel Reeve.

He sat across from her wearing a dark jacket despite the warm morning.

"The plane is being fueled."

Bianca looked through the window.

"Harrison said there would be no delay."

"There isn't."

"Then why are we still here?"

Daniel looked at his watch.

"Because pilots enjoy having enough fuel to remain alive."

Bianca did not smile.

"Where is the case?"

"Safe."

"That isn't what I asked."

Daniel leaned back.

"You should stop asking questions you were paid not to understand."

Bianca's eyes hardened.

"I am carrying his child."

"Then act like someone with something to lose."

She placed one protective hand over her stomach.

"This is not just his child."

Daniel studied her.

"You finally figured that out?"

Bianca's face changed.

"What does that mean?"

He looked toward the terminal door instead of answering.

Outside, two county vehicles entered the airfield parking lot.

Bianca stood abruptly.

"Who are they?"

Daniel rose more slowly.

"Probably people Harrison underestimated."

The first person through the door was not Adrian.

It was Detective Lena Ortiz from the county major crimes unit.

Behind her came a uniformed deputy and an investigator from the state medical licensing board.

"Bianca Mercer?"

Bianca stepped backward.

"Am I under arrest?"

"Not at this moment."

"Then I'm leaving."

"You are free to walk out the door."

Ortiz nodded toward the runway.

"The aircraft is not."

Bianca stared at her.

"Why?"

"A judge has issued an order preserving evidence believed to be aboard."

Daniel's expression remained calm.

Ortiz turned toward him.

"Daniel Reeve?"

"Yes."

"We need to speak with you about a medical transport container."

"Call my lawyer."

"You can call your lawyer yourself."

Ortiz looked back at Bianca.

"Ms. Mercer, you also need to understand that leaving the country while investigators are trying to locate you may affect decisions about charges and release conditions."

Bianca's lips pressed together.

"I didn't run."

"Then why did you leave your phone at home?"

Bianca said nothing.

Thirty miles away, Adrian watched the airfield operation through updates from Mara while sitting beside Khloe's hospital bed.

Khloe was due for discharge later that afternoon, but she refused to leave until she knew whether Noah would remain stable.

"Did they find the embryo?"

"They're searching the plane under the preservation order."

"Is Bianca arrested?"

"Not yet."

"Why does everyone keep saying not yet?"

"Because bad facts are not the same thing as admissible evidence."

"I am beginning to hate lawyers."

"That's healthy."

Her mouth twitched.

Then Mara called.

Adrian answered on speaker.

"They found the case."

Khloe sat straighter.

"On the plane?"

"In a locked luggage compartment."

"Is the embryo inside?"

Mara hesitated.

"The case contains one cryogenic vial."

Khloe closed her eyes.

"Can they test it?"

"Not without risking the sample, but the serial number matches your storage inventory."

Adrian exhaled.

"Secure chain of custody."

"Already done."

"What about Bianca?"

"Ortiz is interviewing her."

Khloe looked at the ceiling.

"She pushed me down stairs and tried to leave the country with my embryo."

"The embryo was in Daniel's controlled luggage."

"You think she didn't know?"

"I think she may know less than Harrison told her."

Khloe laughed without humor.

"She knew enough to put her hands on me."

"That part is clear."

At the airfield, Bianca sat across from Ortiz in a small office normally used for flight planning.

A camera recorded the interview.

"Harrison told me we were going to Toronto for a medical consultation."

Ortiz folded her hands.

"Why Toronto?"

"Specialist."

"Name?"

Bianca hesitated.

"I don't know."

"You boarded an international charter at thirty-two weeks pregnant without knowing the doctor's name?"

"Harrison handled it."

"Harrison is not here."

Bianca looked toward the mirrored window.

"He was supposed to join later."

"Why did you leave your phone at home?"

"He said people could track it."

Ortiz let the silence sit.

"Why would that matter if you were simply seeing a doctor?"

Bianca's eyes filled with anger more than fear.

"Because Adrian Harrington is trying to destroy me."

"Did Adrian Harrington push a pregnant woman down courthouse stairs?"

Bianca looked away.

"It was an accident."

"The video will answer that."

Bianca's head snapped back.

"There is no video."

Ortiz did not move.

That sentence hung in the room.

"Why would you believe there is no video?"

Bianca realized too late what she had said.

"Harrison told me the camera wasn't working."

"When?"

"Before."

Ortiz's eyes sharpened.

"Before you confronted Khloe?"

Bianca stopped breathing for a beat.

"I mean after."

"You just said before."

"I misspoke."

Ortiz leaned back.

"What did Harrison tell you before you went to the courthouse?"

Bianca's hands clenched together.

"Nothing."

"Then why did you believe the camera was not working?"

Bianca stared at the table.

The answer came out almost inaudibly.

"Because he said he had taken care of it."

Ortiz did not react.

"Taken care of what?"

Bianca's breathing quickened.

"The cameras."

That was the probable cause Adrian had needed.

Within twenty minutes, Detective Ortiz obtained a search warrant for Harrison's office electronics related to courthouse surveillance interference and evidence tampering.

Within forty minutes, state investigators entered Cole Strategic Consulting.

Harrison learned about the warrant when three agents stepped into his executive conference room.

He called Malcolm immediately.

Malcolm answered on the second ring.

"Do not touch anything."

"They have a warrant."

"Then let them execute it."

"They are taking servers."

"Do not interfere."

Harrison lowered his voice.

"Bianca talked."

"Then perhaps you should have chosen your accomplices more carefully."

Harrison went silent.

"Accomplice?"

Malcolm realized the word had slipped out.

Harrison smiled faintly.

"Careful, Malcolm."

"Don't threaten your own lawyer."

"Then remember who paid you."

"That is becoming harder to forget."

Malcolm ended the call.

Harrison stood alone while investigators unplugged the server from a locked cabinet.

He watched one technician photograph a label on the back.

ARCHIVE NODE B.

His calm finally broke.

"That server is privileged company material."

The lead investigator looked at the warrant.

"This device is specifically listed."

Harrison's eyes narrowed.

"By whom?"

The investigator did not answer.

He did not need to.

The server had been identified because someone had given law enforcement its exact location.

Only four people knew Archive Node B existed.

Harrison.

His chief technology officer.

Daniel Reeve.

And Bianca.

He looked at his phone.

Three of those people were already slipping beyond his control.

Then a text arrived from an unknown number.

YOU FORGOT THE FIFTH PERSON.

Harrison stared at the screen.

A second message followed.

I KEPT COPIES.
