Chapter 1 - The White Marble.

The first thing Khloe Harrington heard was the sound of paper sliding over stone.

It was such a small sound compared with the force that had just struck her shoulder.

For one suspended second, she did not understand that she was falling.

Her right foot searched for the courthouse step that should have been beneath it and found only air.

Her hand flew instinctively toward the hard curve of her eight-months-pregnant belly.

The other reached backward for the railing.

Her fingers missed cold brass by inches.

Above her, Bianca Mercer still had one arm extended from the shove.

Bianca's yellow dress looked almost painfully bright against the gray columns of the Montgomery County Courthouse.

Her face held no immediate regret.

Only irritation.

Only the stunned expression of someone who had expected Khloe to stumble, not fall.

Khloe's hip struck the first marble edge.

Pain exploded through her side.

She twisted to keep her stomach away from the stone.

A sealed divorce petition flew from her hand.

Pages opened like frightened white birds over the staircase.

Someone near the entrance gasped.

Someone else shouted for security.

Khloe hit another step with her shoulder and felt the world tilt sideways.

Then she heard a voice that had terrified opposing counsel for twelve years and comforted her since childhood.

"Khloe!"

Adrian Harrington was standing halfway across the lower plaza when he saw her.

He had been walking toward the courthouse with a legal assistant and two bankers from a fraud case.

The black leather portfolio in his hand hit the pavement before he had fully turned.

He ran.

He did not see the reporters near the west entrance.

He did not see the security officer reaching for his radio.

He saw only his younger sister tumbling toward the bottom of the staircase with both arms around her unborn child.

Adrian took the steps two at a time.

Khloe slid across the edge of another stair.

Her breath disappeared.

A hot pressure gripped low in her abdomen.

She tried to say her baby's name, but no sound came.

Adrian reached her three steps above the lower landing.

He dropped to his knees and caught her beneath the shoulders.

The impact drove one knee painfully against the marble, but he barely noticed.

"I've got you."

Khloe's eyes opened.

They were wide and glassy.

"My baby."

Adrian's face changed.

The panic that had broken through his usual courtroom composure vanished behind something colder.

"Do not move."

"Adrian, something hurts."

"I know."

His voice softened only for her.

"Ambulance is coming."

A courthouse security officer knelt beside them.

"Ma'am, can you tell me what happened?"

Khloe swallowed against nausea.

She looked up the staircase.

Bianca remained near the top.

Her confidence had finally begun to fracture.

Beside her stood Harrison Cole, Khloe's husband.

Harrison had arrived at the courthouse twenty minutes earlier with Bianca even though the hearing concerned his divorce from Khloe.

That humiliation had been deliberate.

He had wanted Khloe to understand that she had already been replaced.

Now he stared down at his pregnant wife with his face completely white.

"Khloe."

His voice cracked.

Adrian looked up.

The fury in his eyes stopped Harrison three steps into his descent.

"Stay where you are."

Harrison froze.

"She's my wife."

"For the next few hours, perhaps."

Adrian's tone was quiet enough that everyone nearby had to lean closer to hear it.

"Take one more step toward her before the paramedics arrive, and the deputy standing beside me will decide whether you spend the afternoon explaining yourself in an interview room."

The security officer glanced at Harrison and said nothing.

Harrison looked toward Bianca.

That single glance told Adrian more than any confession could have.

It was not concern.

It was calculation.

Bianca took one cautious step backward.

"I didn't mean for her to fall."

Khloe closed her eyes.

The sentence hurt almost as much as the impact.

Not I am sorry.

Not is she okay.

Only an excuse.

Adrian's gaze rose to Bianca.

"Do not leave this courthouse."

Bianca tried to laugh, but the sound broke in the middle.

"You can't order me around."

"No."

Adrian nodded toward the black dome camera mounted beneath the stone arch above her.

"But that can tell us exactly what you did."

Bianca turned.

For the first time, she saw the camera.

Her mouth opened slightly.

Harrison looked at it too.

His reaction was different.

He did not look surprised that a camera existed.

He looked terrified about what else it might have recorded.

Adrian noticed.

He noticed everything.

An ambulance siren approached from the street.

Khloe suddenly gripped his sleeve.

"Adrian."

"I'm here."

"I can't feel him moving."

Every sound on the staircase seemed to disappear.

Adrian looked at his sister's trembling hand over her stomach.

Then he looked up at Harrison Cole.

Harrison had spent six months telling Khloe that she was emotional, difficult, and unstable.

He had moved money from their joint accounts.

He had brought Bianca into their home under the excuse that she was his new communications consultant.

He had filed for emergency control of several marital assets that morning.

And now the woman standing beside him had just sent Khloe down a staircase.

The paramedics pushed through the crowd.

Adrian moved aside only enough for them to reach her.

One paramedic checked Khloe's pulse while another placed a monitor near her belly.

Seconds stretched.

Khloe stared at the paramedic's face.

"Please tell me he's there."

The paramedic adjusted the sensor.

A rapid, faint rhythm finally filled the space between them.

Khloe sobbed once in relief.

Adrian lowered his head for half a second.

Then the paramedic's expression tightened.

"We need to move now."

Khloe saw it.

"What's wrong?"

"The baby's heartbeat is present, but we need obstetric evaluation immediately."

The stretcher arrived.

As the team carefully lifted her, a folded sheet slid from beneath her coat.

Adrian caught it before the wind could carry it away.

It was not part of Khloe's divorce petition.

It was a financial disclosure Harrison's attorney had filed that morning.

Adrian scanned the first page.

Then the second.

His eyes stopped on one line.

Harrison had represented under oath that the Cole-Harrington family trust contained less than three hundred thousand dollars.

Adrian knew for a fact it held more than eleven million.

He raised his gaze slowly.

Harrison was no longer looking at Khloe.

He was staring at the paper in Adrian's hand.

The ambulance doors closed.

Adrian folded the document once and placed it inside his jacket.

He walked toward Harrison.

"You have two problems now."

Harrison's mouth tightened.

"Don't threaten me."

"That wasn't a threat."

Adrian stepped close enough that only Harrison and Bianca could hear him clearly.

"Your girlfriend just pushed my pregnant sister in front of three cameras."

He tapped the folded disclosure inside his coat.

"And you just lied to a judge about eleven million dollars."

Bianca turned sharply toward Harrison.

"Eleven million?"

Harrison did not answer her.

That silence was the first crack in their alliance.

Adrian saw it happen.

Then his phone vibrated.

His legal assistant had already requested preservation of the courthouse surveillance system.

The message contained five words.

CAMERA FILE ALREADY ACCESSED.

Adrian read it twice.

Someone had tried to reach the footage before Khloe had even reached the hospital.

And only three people outside courthouse security knew exactly which camera mattered.
