Chapter 14 - The Name in the DNA.

The genetic discrepancy turned a parentage hearing into a criminal evidence hearing within minutes.
Judge Bell ordered the report sealed and instructed all parties not to discuss the result publicly.
Then she ordered Harrison to provide a new DNA sample under direct law-enforcement supervision.
Harrison's attorney objected.
The objection lasted thirty seconds.
The order remained.
Khloe sat frozen beside Adrian after the video hearing ended.
"You said the embryo was ours."
"The embryo records say it was created from your egg and Harrison's sperm."
"Then why doesn't the sample match?"
"Either the embryo record is false or the reference sample was false."
"Which is worse?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Yes."
She almost laughed, but there was nothing funny left.
Mara entered the conference room.
"Ortiz is already sending officers to supervise a new cheek swab."
"And the old sample?"
"It came from a civil paternity file Harrison submitted two years ago."
Khloe frowned.
"What paternity file?"
Mara looked at Adrian.
Neither of them had known about it until the lab issue.
"A confidential case involving a former employee."
Khloe's expression hardened.
"Of course there was another woman."
"We don't know that."
"Adrian."
"Fine."
He sighed.
"It looks bad."
Mara opened her laptop.
"The case was dismissed after testing supposedly excluded Harrison as the father."
"Who performed the test?"
"A private laboratory."
"Which one?"
Mara turned the screen.
RED CANYON DIAGNOSTICS.
Khloe stared at the name.
"Everything goes back there."
"Not everything."
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"Everything Harrison needed hidden goes back there."
Detective Ortiz collected Harrison's new sample at 12:18 p.m.
The results arrived four hours later.
This time, Harrison matched the newborn girl as the biological father.
The embryo record was accurate.
The old reference sample had been fraudulent.
That raised a new question.
Whose DNA had Harrison submitted two years earlier?
Mara answered it before sunset.
"Daniel Reeve."
Adrian looked up from his desk.
"The security contractor?"
"Yes."
"How do you know?"
"Reeve's DNA is in a federal database from a prior military investigation where he was cleared."
Mara placed two reports side by side.
"The old sample matches him."
Adrian leaned back.
"So Daniel has been providing substitute samples for Harrison for years."
"At least once."
"And he intercepted the embryo transport."
"Yes."
"And he handled the planned nonvoluntary transport for Khloe."
"Yes."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"He's not just security."
Mara nodded.
"He's the cleanup man."
Daniel Reeve had been released after the airfield search because the embryo case was recovered intact and prosecutors initially lacked proof he knew its contents were stolen.
Now the false DNA connection changed his risk.
Ortiz obtained a warrant for his residence.
They found him before dawn packing a duffel bag.
Inside his house were three burner phones, counterfeit medical forms, copies of Khloe's forged electronic signature, and a locked steel box containing twenty-seven thousand dollars in cash.
But the most important item was a handwritten notebook.
Daniel had kept dates.
Payments.
Tasks.
Initials.
One page read:
HC - CAMERA ACCESS TEST - MONDAY.
HC - K TRANSFER ROUTE - TUESDAY NIGHT.
NV - MEDICAL INTAKE DOCS.
MP - COURT PACKAGE.
BM - CONFRONTATION.
The initials connected Harrison Cole, Nathan Voss, Malcolm Price, Bianca Mercer, and Daniel Reeve to the same week.
Another page contained a line that made Detective Ortiz call Adrian immediately.
BACKUP OPTION IF K REFUSES VEHICLE.
Adrian read the photograph on his phone.
"What was the backup option?"
Ortiz answered.
"No description."
"Ask Reeve."
"He lawyered up."
"Of course."
"But we found a matching payment."
"To whom?"
"A private ambulance company."
Adrian's face hardened.
"For what service?"
"Involuntary psychiatric transport."
"Date?"
"The night after the courthouse hearing."
The plan became clearer with every piece.
If Khloe did not voluntarily enter a vehicle after the psychiatric order, a private ambulance would arrive with paperwork prepared by Nathan Voss.
She would be transported across state lines to Red Canyon.
Harrison would file for custody of Noah.
Bianca would remain pregnant under Red Canyon's care.
By the time Khloe could prove the psychiatric records were false, Harrison intended to have court orders, birth paperwork, and control of the trust.
It was a corporate takeover applied to a family.
Adrian felt sick understanding its efficiency.
Khloe listened to the explanation without interrupting.
When Adrian finished, she asked only one question.
"Would they have let me call you?"
He looked at the forged intake form.
One section restricted communications for the first seventy-two hours based on alleged acute psychiatric risk.
"Probably not immediately."
Khloe nodded slowly.
"That's why he scheduled everything after the courthouse."
"Yes."
"You were supposed to think I had broken down."
"Yes."
"And by the time you reached me, he would have had orders saying I was dangerous."
Adrian's anger showed now.
"He underestimated how quickly I would start breaking doors."
Khloe looked at him.
"Metaphorical doors."
He waited.
"Mostly."
She smiled for half a second.
Then the smile disappeared.
"What happens to Bianca?"
"Criminally?"
"And with the baby."
"Her lawyer is negotiating a plea on the assault and computer-access conduct."
"Will she go to prison?"
"Possibly not prison if prosecutors credit substantial cooperation, but there will be consequences."
Khloe looked toward the NICU.
The baby girl had been temporarily registered as Baby Girl Mercer pending formal naming and parentage orders.
Khloe hated that name and also understood why the hospital used it.
"She carried my daughter."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"And she nearly killed my son."
"Yes."
"Those facts do not cancel each other."
"No."
Khloe rubbed her forehead.
"I don't know what to feel."
"You are not required to reduce this to one emotion."
She looked at him.
"That's another annoyingly useful sentence."
"I'm on a streak."
The full evidentiary parentage hearing began three days later.
Judge Bell closed the courtroom to protect medical information involving the newborns.
Khloe testified first.
Adrian did not question her.
He had brought in a separate family-law specialist, Rachel Sloan, to avoid turning the proceeding into a spectacle about Khloe's famous brother.
Rachel asked Khloe about the creation of the embryos, storage agreements, her lack of consent to transfer, the forged email, and the moment she learned Bianca was carrying one of them.
Khloe answered without exaggeration.
Harrison watched from counsel table under electronic monitoring conditions.
He had not looked at Khloe directly since the hearing began.
His attorney cross-examined carefully.
"Mrs. Cole, isn't it true that during your marriage you discussed the possibility of donating unused embryos?"
"We discussed donation to research if we chose not to use them."
"So donation was not unthinkable to you."
"Giving my husband an embryo so his mistress could carry my genetic child was not part of the conversation."
Even Judge Bell's clerk looked down to hide a reaction.
The attorney changed direction.
"You have expressed intense anger toward Ms. Mercer, correct?"
"Yes."
"Yet you seek legal custody of the child she carried."
Khloe held his gaze.
"I seek recognition that no one had the right to steal my embryo."
"That was not my question."
"Then ask a better one."
Rachel stood.
"Your Honor."
Judge Bell looked over her glasses.
"Mrs. Cole, answer only the question asked."
Khloe nodded.
"Yes, I seek custody of my daughter."
The attorney sat.
Bianca testified next.
The room changed when she entered.
She moved carefully after surgery and sat beside Simone.
Harrison finally looked directly at someone.
Bianca did not return the look.
Simone questioned her about the embryo transfer.
"Did Khloe Harrington ever tell you she was donating an embryo to you?"
"No."
"Did you ever speak to her about carrying the embryo before implantation?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Bianca looked down.
"Because Harrison told me she was unstable and had abandoned the embryos."
"Did you later learn the embryo was genetically Khloe's?"
"Yes."
"Did you continue the pregnancy?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Bianca's eyes filled.
"Because she was already my baby too."
A silence followed.
Simone did not soften the next question.
"Did you push Khloe down the courthouse stairs?"
Bianca swallowed.
"Yes."
"Was it an accident?"
"The fall was not what I intended."
"That is not the question."
Bianca looked at Khloe.
"I pushed her."
Khloe did not look away.
"And I was wrong."
Harrison's attorney stood for cross-examination.
"Ms. Mercer, you are cooperating with prosecutors in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence, correct?"
"Yes."
"So you have a powerful reason to blame Mr. Cole."
"I have a powerful reason to tell the truth before he ruins another life."
The attorney paused.
"You loved Mr. Cole."
Bianca's expression became unreadable.
"I loved who he said he was."
"You wanted to replace Khloe."
Bianca looked toward Khloe again.
"At one point, yes."
"And now you want this court to believe you were also his victim."
Bianca inhaled slowly.
"I can be guilty of hurting Khloe and still have been lied to by Harrison."
The courtroom became completely quiet.
Khloe felt something inside her settle.
That was the truth she had been trying to hold for days.
Bianca was not innocent.
Bianca was not merely evil.
Harrison had counted on everyone needing simple categories.
The truth was stronger because it did not need them.
Then Malcolm Price took the stand.
Harrison's face finally cracked.
Malcolm authenticated the emergency custody draft, the forged timeline, and multiple emails from Harrison.
Rachel handed him one final message.
"Mr. Price, who sent this?"
"Harrison Cole."
"Read it."
Malcolm looked toward his former client.
Then he read aloud.
"Once Bell signs the psych order, Khloe becomes a credibility problem instead of a legal problem."
Rachel let the sentence hang.
"What did you understand that to mean?"
"That Harrison expected any accusation Khloe made afterward to be discounted because of a psychiatric finding."
"Including accusations about forged signatures and embryo transfer?"
"Yes."
Harrison leaned toward his lawyer and whispered sharply.
Judge Bell noticed.
"Mr. Cole, do you wish to say something?"
His attorney touched his arm.
Harrison ignored him.
"Yes."
The room shifted.
His lawyer whispered.
"Do not."
Harrison stood anyway.
"Everyone in this room is pretending Khloe had no idea what was happening."
Rachel rose.
"Your Honor, Mr. Cole is represented and not under examination."
Judge Bell looked at Harrison.
"Sit down."
He did not.
"She knew we were done."
"Mr. Cole."
"She knew I wanted another life."
His voice grew louder.
"She just couldn't stand that I built one without her."
Khloe stared at him.
For the first time, Harrison looked directly back.
"You think Adrian made you powerful?"
His lawyer tried again.
"Harrison, stop."
"You were nobody until your brother walked into that courthouse."
Khloe did not react.
Judge Bell's voice became icy.
"Deputy."
A courtroom deputy stepped toward Harrison.
That finally stopped him.
He sat.
His attorney looked devastated.
Rachel slowly returned to counsel table.
Adrian did not smile.
He knew exactly what had happened.
Harrison had spent months manufacturing evidence that Khloe lacked emotional control.
Now, in the most important hearing of his life, he had demonstrated his own.
Judge Bell recessed for thirty minutes.
When she returned, everyone stood.
Her ruling began with the embryo transfer.
She found substantial evidence that Khloe's consent had been forged.
She found the gestational agreement unenforceable against Khloe because it arose from fraud.
She recognized Khloe as the child's legal mother and Harrison as biological father, subject to separate custody restrictions arising from the criminal proceedings.
Then she addressed Bianca.
"This court will not pretend gestation is meaningless merely because the underlying transfer was unlawful."
Bianca began to cry quietly.
"Ms. Mercer will have an opportunity, through independent counsel, to seek appropriate post-birth contact if all parties and future courts determine such contact serves the child's best interests."
Khloe closed her eyes.
It was not a simple victory.
That made it feel real.
Judge Bell then issued temporary sole physical and legal custody of both Noah and the newborn girl to Khloe upon medical discharge.
Harrison would have no unsupervised contact pending the criminal case and further custody evaluation.
The hearing ended.
Outside the sealed courtroom, Khloe leaned against the wall.
Adrian approached.
"You did it."
She shook her head.
"We survived a hearing."
"Same thing in my profession."
Her phone rang.
Saint Catherine NICU.
Khloe answered immediately.
The nurse's voice was urgent but controlled.
"Mrs. Harrington, we need you to come back to the hospital."
Khloe's face changed.
"Which baby?"
May you like
A pause.
"Noah."
