Chapter 13 - The Child Between Them.

Bianca's labor began under police notification and hospital security restrictions.
Not because she was in custody.
Because everyone involved understood that Harrison Cole had spent months treating pregnancies like movable legal property.
Saint Catherine placed Bianca in a private obstetric room on a different floor from Noah's NICU bay.
Simone arrived first.
Detective Ortiz arrived second.
Khloe learned at three in the morning when Adrian's phone rang beside the chair where he had fallen asleep.
She was awake before he answered.
"Is it her?"
Adrian looked at the screen.
"Simone."
Khloe sat upright.
"Answer."
He did.
Simone's voice was tight.
"Bianca is in active labor."
Khloe's hands went cold.
"How advanced?"
"Four centimeters."
"Baby?"
"Stable right now."
Khloe stood.
Adrian immediately shook his head.
"You are not going upstairs."
"I didn't say I was."
"Your face did."
"That could be my daughter."
"And Bianca is the patient."
Khloe stopped.
That distinction mattered.
She hated that it mattered and knew Adrian was right.
"I won't interfere."
"Good."
"But I am not leaving this hospital."
"I wasn't going to ask you to."
At 4:10 a.m., Harrison's attorney filed another emergency request seeking permission for him to attend the birth.
The criminal court's home-detention order allowed medical emergencies involving immediate family only with prior authorization.
The parentage of Bianca's child was precisely the issue in dispute.
Adrian opposed the request.
Simone also opposed it on Bianca's behalf.
That surprised Harrison more than anything else.
His lawyer called him at home.
"Bianca does not want you there."
Harrison stood in his kitchen wearing an ankle monitor and yesterday's shirt.
"She is carrying my daughter."
"She says your presence will increase her stress."
"Her lawyer told her to say that."
"Possibly."
"Get me into that hospital."
"The judge is not likely to authorize it."
Harrison looked toward the dark living room.
"Then tell the court Khloe is manipulating her."
His attorney was silent.
"Did you hear me?"
"Yes."
"Then do it."
"Mr. Cole, I am not filing unsupported accusations because you are angry."
Harrison's expression hardened.
"Malcolm used to understand his job."
"Malcolm is cooperating with prosecutors."
"And he will regret it."
The lawyer paused.
"Statements like that are why I recommend ending this call."
He hung up.
Harrison stared at the phone.
One by one, people had stopped obeying him.
He did not understand that loss of control often feels to controlling people like persecution.
At Saint Catherine, labor progressed quickly.
Bianca asked Simone to remain near her bed.
Between contractions, she stared at the ceiling.
"Does Khloe know?"
"Yes."
"Is she here?"
"In the building."
Bianca closed her eyes.
"She must hate me."
Simone did not offer false comfort.
"She has reasons."
"I love this baby."
"I know."
"What happens after she is born?"
"The court will determine legal parentage."
"That's not what I asked."
Simone sat closer.
"Bianca, you need to decide what you are asking the court to recognize."
Bianca's face tightened with another contraction.
When it passed, she whispered.
"I don't want Harrison to have her."
"That is clear."
"I don't want Khloe to take her and pretend I never existed."
"Then say that honestly."
Bianca looked toward the window.
"What would you do?"
Simone shook her head.
"I am your lawyer, not the person carrying your consequences."
Bianca laughed weakly.
"That sounded like something Adrian Harrington would say."
"Don't insult me during labor."
For the first time in hours, Bianca smiled.
At 5:42 a.m., the fetal heart tracing changed.
The obstetric team moved faster.
The attending physician explained that the baby was showing signs of distress.
Bianca's face went pale.
"Is she okay?"
"We're going to deliver now."
"C-section?"
"Yes."
Bianca grabbed Simone's hand.
"Tell Khloe."
Simone blinked.
"What?"
"Tell her before they put me under."
"Tell her what?"
Bianca's eyes filled.
"Tell her I am sorry I became part of this before I understood what it was."
Simone nodded.
"I will."
"And tell her..."
Bianca stopped as another wave of pain hit.
Then she forced out the words.
"Tell her I won't lie about whose child this is."
The operating-room doors closed.
Twenty-eight minutes later, a premature baby girl entered the world weighing four pounds, two ounces.
She required respiratory support but had a strong heartbeat.
The neonatal team transferred her immediately to a secured NICU bay.
Khloe learned from Simone before anyone else outside the medical team.
"She's alive."
Khloe covered her mouth.
Adrian stood beside her.
"And Bianca?"
"Stable."
Khloe sat slowly.
"Can I see the baby?"
Simone hesitated.
"The hospital needs direction because legal parentage is disputed."
Adrian took over.
"Judge Bell's interim order permits Khloe visual access if medically appropriate and if Bianca consents."
Simone nodded.
"Bianca consented before surgery."
Khloe looked at Adrian.
"Come with me."
The second NICU bay was quieter than Noah's section.
Khloe entered wearing a gown over her clothes and washed her hands until the nurse told her they were clean.
The baby lay beneath warm light with dark hair barely visible beneath a cap.
Khloe stopped several feet away.
She had expected recognition.
Something dramatic.
Instead, she felt fear.
The child was real now.
Not an embryo number.
Not a legal argument.
Not evidence.
A tiny girl breathing beneath clear tubing.
Khloe moved closer.
"Does she have a name?"
The nurse looked at the chart.
"No final name entered."
Khloe almost laughed at the absurdity.
Harrison had planned a birth certificate months earlier, yet the child herself had arrived nameless.
The nurse allowed Khloe to place one finger near the baby's hand without touching any equipment.
The tiny fingers moved.
Khloe's eyes filled.
"Hi."
Her voice broke.
"I'm Khloe."
Adrian stood behind her and said nothing.
Several minutes later, Detective Ortiz arrived outside the NICU with a laboratory technician.
The court had authorized postnatal genetic testing using buccal samples from the baby, Khloe, and Harrison's previously collected reference sample from a civil paternity case.
Bianca had consented to the infant sample.
The lab marked the testing urgent.
Results were expected within hours.
At 10:30 a.m., Judge Bell convened the emergency hearing by secure video because both newborns remained hospitalized.
Khloe appeared from a hospital conference room.
Bianca appeared from her recovery bed with Simone beside her.
Harrison appeared from home detention beside his new counsel.
The screen divided them into separate boxes.
Judge Bell looked tired.
"I would like to begin by reminding everyone that two premature infants are currently receiving intensive medical care."
Her gaze moved toward Harrison's box.
"This court will not permit either child to be used as leverage."
Harrison's lawyer spoke first.
"Mr. Cole seeks immediate recognition as the father and requests that Bianca Mercer be recognized as the legal mother based on the gestational agreement."
Adrian responded.
"That agreement was procured through forged consent and identity fraud."
"Alleged."
"Your client is under indictment for the conduct."
"Charges are not convictions."
Judge Bell raised one hand.
"Enough."
She looked at Bianca.
"Ms. Mercer, what position are you taking?"
Bianca's face was pale from surgery.
She looked toward the camera.
"I am not claiming to be the genetic mother."
Harrison leaned toward his lawyer.
Bianca continued.
"I carried her."
Her voice shook.
"I love her."
Khloe felt tears rise but did not look away.
"But Harrison told me the embryo had been legally donated."
Bianca swallowed.
"I now believe that was a lie."
Judge Bell asked quietly.
"Are you asking this court to enforce the agreement?"
Bianca closed her eyes for one second.
"No."
Harrison's face changed.
"Bianca."
His microphone carried the word.
Judge Bell's expression sharpened.
"Mr. Cole, you will not address another party directly."
Bianca looked at Harrison's image anyway.
"You told me she gave us the embryo."
Harrison's lawyer muted him before he could answer.
Judge Bell turned to Khloe.
"Mrs. Cole, what are you asking me to do today?"
Khloe's hands trembled beneath the table.
"Protect the child until the truth is established."
"More specifically?"
Khloe looked toward Bianca's box.
"I want the court to recognize that I never consented to giving away my embryo."
She paused.
"But I also do not want anyone pretending Bianca's pregnancy did not happen."
Adrian looked at his sister.
She had not told him she would say that.
Khloe continued.
"Harrison created this situation because he assumed women would fight each other while he kept control."
Her voice became steadier.
"I am not going to help him prove himself right."
Even Judge Bell paused.
Then the court clerk entered and handed the judge a sealed envelope.
The expedited genetic report had arrived.
Judge Bell opened it.
She read silently.
Harrison's face was unreadable.
Bianca stopped breathing visibly.
Khloe gripped Adrian's hand beneath the table.
Judge Bell looked up.
"The laboratory reports a greater than 99.99 percent probability that Khloe Harrington is the genetic mother of the newborn girl."
Khloe closed her eyes.
The judge continued.
"Harrison Cole is the genetic father."
Bianca began to cry silently.
Judge Bell's voice remained gentle but firm.
"Pending a full hearing, the court recognizes Khloe Harrington as the child's genetic and presumptive legal mother and prohibits issuance of a birth certificate inconsistent with that finding."
Harrison's lawyer objected.
"Your Honorâ"
"You may preserve your objection."
The judge turned to Bianca.
"The court also recognizes Ms. Mercer's substantial gestational role and will appoint independent counsel to address any lawful interests arising from it."
Khloe opened her eyes.
For the first time since the courthouse steps, something had been named correctly.
Her daughter.
Then Judge Bell looked at the final page of the lab report.
Her expression changed.
"Counsel, remain on the line."
Adrian straightened.
"Is there a problem?"
The judge looked toward Harrison.
"There is an additional genetic finding that was not requested by the court."
Harrison stopped moving.
Judge Bell continued.
"The laboratory detected a discrepancy in the paternal comparison sample."
Khloe looked at Adrian.
"What discrepancy?"
Judge Bell read carefully.
"The sample submitted as Harrison Cole's reference DNA does not genetically match the newborn."
The room went completely silent.
Harrison's face lost all color.
Adrian stared at him through the screen.
May you like
Someone had substituted Harrison's DNA sample.
And the only reason to do that was to hide who the child's father actually was.
