Chapter 6 - Two Birth Certificates.

The surgical doors opened forty-three minutes later.

Adrian had spent every one of those minutes standing instead of sitting.

He had read the same text message from Mara nine times without absorbing it.

He had answered no calls.

He had argued with no one.

For a man who built his career with words, silence had become the only thing he could manage.

Dr. Ross approached him still wearing a surgical cap.

Adrian searched her face before she spoke.

"They're both alive."

His shoulders dropped for the first time.

"Both?"

"We performed an emergency cesarean delivery."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"The baby?"

"A boy."

"How is he?"

"Premature, small, but breathing with support."

"Khloe?"

"Stable."

Dr. Ross paused.

"There was more placental separation than the ultrasound showed."

Adrian looked toward the closed doors.

"Was it caused by the fall?"

"Trauma is the most likely explanation."

He nodded once.

The answer became evidence the instant he heard it, but for several seconds he forced himself not to think like a lawyer.

"Can I see her?"

"Soon."

"And the baby?"

"NICU first."

Dr. Ross gave him a tired smile.

"Your nephew has a strong set of lungs for someone who arrived six weeks early."

Adrian almost laughed.

"Runs in the family."

Khloe woke in recovery with tears already on her face.

She did not remember beginning to cry.

She remembered bright lights.

She remembered someone saying the baby's heart rate was falling again.

She remembered asking whether Adrian could stay with her.

Then nothing.

When she opened her eyes, Adrian was seated beside her.

"Where is he?"

"NICU."

"Is he alive?"

"Yes."

Her eyes closed in relief.

"Can I see him?"

"As soon as they clear you."

"Did he cry?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Apparently he made an entrance."

Khloe pressed a hand against her chest.

"Noah."

"That's still the name?"

"That's always been the name."

"Then Noah Harrington Cole has already terrified half this hospital."

Her smile disappeared at the surname.

"Not Cole."

Adrian looked at her.

"Khloe."

"Not after today."

Her voice was weak, but the decision inside it was not.

"I want Harrington on his birth certificate."

"We can discuss the legal process when you're stronger."

"No."

She looked directly at him.

"Harrison tried to take my money, my credibility, and maybe another child made from my embryo."

Her voice trembled once.

"He does not get to put his name on Noah simply because biology gave him the opportunity."

Adrian squeezed her hand.

"Then we will handle it correctly."

Three floors below, Harrison Cole was learning that a protective order could feel like a locked door even when no physical lock existed.

He stood at the hospital security desk with Malcolm Price beside him.

"My son was just born."

The security supervisor remained polite.

"You are restricted from direct contact with Mrs. Cole."

"I'm asking to see my child."

"The neonatal unit has been notified of the court order."

Harrison turned toward Malcolm.

"Fix this."

Malcolm kept his voice low.

"Not in the lobby."

"My wife nearly dies and somehow her brother gets to keep me from my own child?"

"Your girlfriend pushed your wife down a staircase."

Harrison's eyes flashed.

"Keep your voice down."

Malcolm stepped closer.

"Then start acting like you understand the problem."

Harrison looked around.

Two hospital employees were watching.

A man with a camera stood near the entrance.

The story was spreading.

Malcolm continued quietly.

"Adrian knows about Red Canyon."

Harrison's face hardened.

"How much?"

"Enough to ask questions."

"And Bianca?"

"She is at her apartment."

"She needs to leave town."

"Absolutely not."

"Why?"

"Because leaving after an alleged assault makes her look guilty."

"She is thirty-two weeks pregnant."

"Which means she should be even more careful about how she appears."

Harrison looked toward the elevators.

"Khloe cannot find out the full agreement."

Malcolm's expression darkened.

"She already may have."

"Then we need the original files destroyed."

Malcolm stared at him.

"Do not say that to me again."

Harrison gave a humorless smile.

"You drafted them."

"I drafted what you represented as lawful consents."

"You were paid not to ask questions."

"I was paid to practice law."

"Same difference in your office."

Malcolm's jaw tightened.

That was the second crack in Harrison's circle.

The first had been Bianca learning about the eleven million.

The second was the lawyer realizing his client might happily sacrifice him.

Upstairs, Mara entered Khloe's room carrying a small laptop and a folder.

Khloe had just returned from seeing Noah for the first time.

The baby had been impossibly small beneath the clear walls of the incubator.

A tiny knitted cap covered his head.

A breathing tube rested beneath his nose.

Khloe had pressed two fingers through the access opening and touched his hand.

Noah had closed his fingers around one of them.

That grip had changed something in her.

The fear remained.

But beneath it was resolve.

Mara sat carefully near the foot of the bed.

"I can come back tomorrow."

Khloe shook her head.

"Tell me."

Mara glanced at Adrian.

He nodded.

"We obtained an archived copy of the gestational carrier agreement before the Red Canyon server restricted access."

Khloe's expression remained steady.

"Bianca signed it?"

"Yes."

"Harrison?"

"Yes."

"My signature?"

"There is one."

Khloe looked down.

"Forged."

"We believe so."

Mara opened the folder.

"But the agreement has an unusual clause."

Adrian leaned forward.

"Which clause?"

"It says that if the intended mother's parental rights become unavailable due to death, incapacity, abandonment, or adverse judicial finding, Bianca Mercer will assume permanent parental status with Harrison Cole."

Khloe stared at her.

"Intended mother means me?"

"On one page, yes."

"On one page?"

Mara turned the document.

"The agreement changes terminology halfway through."

The first section identified Khloe as the genetic and intended mother.

The later section identified Bianca as intended mother and gestational carrier.

Two legal identities had been layered into one contract.

Someone had tried to create a document that could be used differently depending on what happened next.

Adrian read the contingency clause again.

"Adverse judicial finding."

Mara nodded.

"Like an order declaring Khloe mentally unstable or unfit."

The emergency custody petition suddenly made sense in a way Adrian did not like.

Harrison had not merely wanted leverage in a divorce.

He had been building the legal trigger required by the carrier agreement.

Khloe spoke first.

"If Judge Bell had signed that psychiatric order today..."

Adrian finished the thought.

"Harrison could have argued that the contingency clause was activated."

Mara nodded.

"Exactly."

Khloe looked toward the NICU corridor.

"And then what?"

No one answered immediately.

Mara finally said it.

"Then Harrison and Bianca would have paperwork claiming she was the legal mother of the child she is carrying."

Khloe's face became pale.

"My child."

Adrian nodded.

"If the embryo is yours."

"It is."

"We still need genetic confirmation."

"Then get it."

A nurse entered with discharge paperwork for the next day if Khloe remained stable.

The ordinary forms created a strange pause in the conversation.

Then Mara's phone vibrated.

She read the message and looked at Adrian.

"We found the original embryo transfer request."

"Good."

"Not good."

She turned the screen.

The form listed two embryos for transfer to Red Canyon, not one.

Khloe stared at the number.

"Two?"

Mara nodded.

"One was scheduled for Bianca."

"And the other?"

Mara scrolled down.

"Destroyed."

Khloe's face went blank.

"Destroyed why?"

"The record says genetic abnormality."

Adrian looked at Mara.

"Was that diagnosis real?"

"We don't know."

Khloe pressed her lips together.

She had believed three embryos remained after becoming pregnant with Noah naturally following their last unsuccessful IVF cycle.

Now one might be inside Bianca.

One was listed as destroyed.

Only one remained in storage.

Mara's phone buzzed again.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

Adrian asked.

"The remaining embryo was removed from Red Canyon yesterday."

Khloe stared at her.

"Removed by whom?"

Mara read the transport authorization.

"Harrison Cole."

"Where did he take it?"

May you like

Mara looked up.

"We don't know."
