Chapter 4 - The Hearing Without Her.

At 1:58 p.m., Harrison Cole entered Courtroom 4B wearing a navy suit and the expression of a worried husband.

He had always understood the value of appearance.

That afternoon, every detail had been chosen carefully.

No Bianca.

No bright colors.

No arrogance.

Only a pale blue tie, tired eyes, and a wedding ring he had stopped wearing three months earlier.

His attorney, Malcolm Price, placed one comforting hand on his shoulder before they sat.

Reporters had not yet learned about the emergency custody filing.

Harrison wanted the hearing quiet.

He wanted an order before the facts became public.

Judge Marjorie Bell entered at exactly two.

"We are here on petitioner Harrison Cole's emergency motion concerning the welfare of an unborn child expected within approximately six weeks."

She looked toward the empty respondent table.

"Where is Mrs. Cole?"

Malcolm stood.

"Hospitalized, Your Honor."

"Because of the courthouse incident?"

"Yes."

"And your client is asking me to order a psychiatric evaluation of his hospitalized pregnant wife based on an incident that occurred this morning?"

Malcolm lowered his voice respectfully.

"Based on a longer pattern of alarming behavior."

The courtroom doors opened.

Adrian Harrington walked in with Mara Quinn, two associates, and a rolling case filled with documents.

Harrison's face changed before he could stop it.

Judge Bell looked over her glasses.

"Mr. Harrington."

"Your Honor."

"Are you appearing for Mrs. Cole?"

"I am appearing for Khloe Harrington Cole, who is currently under obstetric monitoring because the petitioner's girlfriend pushed her down the courthouse stairs this morning."

Malcolm rose.

"Objection to counsel's characterization."

Adrian did not look at him.

Judge Bell lifted one hand.

"We are not trying the incident today."

"Understood."

Adrian placed his case at counsel table.

"But we are also not allowing Mr. Cole to weaponize that incident against the woman who was injured."

Harrison stared straight ahead.

Judge Bell looked at the petition.

"Mr. Price, your filing says Mrs. Cole intentionally threw herself down the stairs."

"My client witnessed concerning behavior."

"Your client told courthouse deputies he was looking at his phone when she fell."

Malcolm's face tightened.

That fact had reached the judge faster than he expected.

Adrian opened a folder.

"Your Honor, I have certified audio from the responding deputy's body camera."

Harrison turned sharply toward Malcolm.

Malcolm whispered something to him.

Judge Bell held out her hand.

"Give it to my clerk."

Adrian did.

"I also have an affidavit from county IT establishing that within four minutes of Mrs. Cole's fall, accounts associated with both Mr. Cole and Bianca Mercer attempted to access the courthouse surveillance file."

Malcolm stood again.

"We have not seen that document."

"You filed an emergency motion ninety minutes ago."

Adrian finally looked at him.

"Emergency works both ways."

Judge Bell almost smiled, but did not.

"Mr. Harrington, remain focused."

"Yes, Your Honor."

She turned to Harrison.

"Mr. Cole, stand."

Harrison rose slowly.

"Did you tell law enforcement you did not see your wife fall?"

"I said I didn't see the first part."

"That is not what I asked."

Harrison swallowed.

"Yes."

"Then why does your sworn petition state that you personally observed her intentionally throw herself backward?"

Harrison looked at Malcolm.

The judge's voice sharpened.

"Do not look at your lawyer."

Harrison faced her again.

"I was confused when the deputy questioned me."

"Were you confused when you signed this petition?"

"No."

Adrian watched Harrison's hands.

His right thumb kept rubbing the edge of his wedding ring.

A tell.

Harrison had done the same thing during negotiations with Khloe's father years earlier.

Judge Bell turned to Adrian.

"What about these messages allegedly sent by your client?"

"Fabricated."

Malcolm objected.

Adrian placed another affidavit on the table.

"Our forensic consultant has already confirmed that three of the messages were created through a desktop synchronization account and never originated from Khloe's phone."

Judge Bell's expression hardened.

"Mr. Price?"

Malcolm glanced at Harrison.

"We need time to examine that claim."

"You did not ask for time when you accused a hospitalized pregnant woman of wanting to harm her unborn child."

The room went silent.

Judge Bell closed the petition.

"Emergency psychiatric evaluation denied."

Harrison's shoulders tightened.

"Any request concerning custody after birth will be heard only after proper notice, independent medical evidence, and a full evidentiary record."

Adrian remained standing.

"Your Honor, we also request a temporary protective order prohibiting Mr. Cole and Ms. Mercer from contacting Khloe directly while she is hospitalized."

Malcolm immediately objected.

"On what basis?"

Adrian looked at the judge.

"Because Mr. Cole has already tried to use her medical crisis as leverage, and Ms. Mercer is under investigation for causing it."

Judge Bell considered the request.

"Granted for seventy-two hours pending further hearing."

Harrison leaned toward Malcolm.

"This is insane."

Judge Bell heard him.

"Mr. Cole."

He straightened.

"If you believe the rules do not apply to you, I can arrange a more educational afternoon."

"No, Your Honor."

The hearing ended twelve minutes later.

Outside the courtroom, Harrison caught up to Adrian near the elevators.

"You think you're protecting her?"

Adrian stopped.

Mara remained three steps behind him.

"I know I am."

Harrison lowered his voice.

"Khloe doesn't know everything."

"Neither do you."

"You should tell her to settle."

Adrian turned fully toward him.

"Settle what?"

"The divorce."

"You mean the divorce where you hid eleven million dollars?"

Harrison's expression flickered.

"You don't understand those transfers."

"Then explain them."

"Not here."

"You had a courtroom five feet away."

The elevator arrived.

Harrison did not move.

"If this becomes public, Khloe gets hurt too."

Adrian studied him carefully.

"That sounded like a threat."

"It was advice."

"Then your advice is as bad as your affidavits."

Adrian stepped into the elevator with Mara.

As the doors began to close, Harrison spoke again.

"Ask her about Red Canyon."

The elevator doors shut.

Adrian looked at Mara.

"What is Red Canyon?"

"No idea."

"Find out."

By the time they reached the lobby, Mara was already searching property databases.

Nothing appeared under Khloe's name.

Nothing under Harrison's.

Then Mara stopped walking.

"Wait."

Adrian turned.

"What?"

"There's a Red Canyon Holdings LLC."

"Owner?"

"Anonymous Delaware structure."

"Property?"

Mara opened the record.

"A private medical facility outside Scottsdale."

Adrian felt the pieces shift.

The Arizona concierge service.

The rented house.

Phase one relocation.

He called Calvin.

"Trace every payment to Red Canyon Holdings."

Calvin answered from the war room.

"Already have one."

"From Harrison?"

"Not directly."

"From whom?"

Calvin paused.

"From Khloe's trust."

Adrian stopped in the courthouse lobby.

"How much?"

"Two point four million dollars."

"Authorized by whom?"

Keyboard clicks filled the line.

Then Calvin spoke more quietly.

"According to the trust record, authorized by Khloe Harrington Cole."

Adrian knew before he asked.

"Signature?"

"Electronic."

"IP address?"

Another pause.

"Harrison's office."

Adrian looked through the courthouse glass toward the rain-dark street.

The eleven million dollars had not simply been hidden.

Part of it had been used to fund a private medical facility in Arizona.

A facility Harrison had just warned Adrian not to investigate.

And whatever waited inside Red Canyon was important enough that Harrison would rather risk perjury than let Khloe discover it.

Adrian spent the next hour reconstructing the transfers in chronological order.

The pattern was cleaner than he expected.

Every major payment happened within forty-eight hours of a document that weakened Khloe's future position.

The first Red Canyon payment followed the life insurance application.

The second followed the embryo transfer.

A third payment followed the creation of the fake therapy statement.

The money was not random theft.

It was a budget.

Harrison had assigned costs to each stage of removing Khloe from control of her own life.

Calvin highlighted another transfer.

"This one is different."

Adrian looked.

Seventy-five thousand dollars had gone to a crisis-communications firm in Washington.

The invoice date was two weeks before the courthouse hearing.

The description read REPUTATION CONTAINMENT - DOMESTIC MATTER.

Mara called the firm pretending to confirm an accounts-payable detail.

The receptionist accidentally mentioned that a media statement had already been drafted for Harrison.

Adrian subpoenaed it.

The draft arrived under protest later that night.

It described Khloe as a troubled woman receiving intensive psychiatric care after a public breakdown at the courthouse.

It praised Harrison for protecting an unborn child from an unstable parent.

The statement had been written before Khloe ever stepped onto the marble staircase.

Adrian read it twice.

Then he sent it to Judge Bell as supplemental evidence under seal.

Harrison had prepared not merely for a legal result.

He had prepared the public story that would make the result believable.
