Chapter 11 - The Daughter Without Her Name.

Khloe did not sleep after seeing the draft birth certificate.

She sat beside Noah's empty bassinet in Adrian's guest room and read the same two lines until dawn.

Mother: Bianca Mercer.

Father: Harrison Cole.

The paper had been prepared before Bianca ever reached thirty weeks.

Someone had expected the lie to become official.

Someone had planned for a child carrying Khloe's DNA to enter the world without Khloe existing anywhere on the first legal document of her life.

At six in the morning, Adrian found his sister awake with the report spread across her knees.

"You need sleep."

Khloe looked up.

"You need a different opening sentence."

He sat across from her.

"Fair."

She tapped the paper.

"Can they do this?"

"They can try."

"That is not what I asked."

"The legal answer is complicated because Bianca is the gestational carrier and the paperwork was designed to make her appear to be the intended mother."

Khloe's face tightened.

"But the embryo is mine."

"Yes."

"And I never consented to the transfer."

"Correct."

"Then what is complicated?"

Adrian leaned forward.

"Complicated does not mean they win."

"It means they can keep me fighting while she gives birth."

"That is what Harrison was counting on."

Khloe looked toward the window.

The sky above Montgomery County was turning pale blue.

"File whatever you need to file."

"We will."

"Today."

"Yes."

"And I want Bianca prevented from leaving the state."

"The criminal court has already imposed travel restrictions as a condition of release."

Khloe looked back at him.

"She was released?"

"Pending trial."

"After pushing me down stairs?"

"She has no prior record, surrendered her passport, and is pregnant."

Khloe's jaw tightened.

"I know how bail works."

"Then you also know anger does not change the standard."

She stared at him.

"You are irritating when you're right."

"I've made a career of it."

At nine fifteen, Adrian filed an emergency parentage action under seal.

The petition asked the family court to recognize Khloe as the genetic mother of the fetus Bianca carried, declare the transfer authorization presumptively fraudulent, appoint an independent guardian for the unborn child's legal interests, and prohibit any birth registration inconsistent with the biological evidence until the court determined parentage.

It was unusual litigation.

It was also urgent.

Judge Bell scheduled a preliminary conference for that afternoon.

Harrison's response arrived before lunch.

He denied fraud.

He claimed Khloe had knowingly donated the embryo to him and Bianca after deciding she did not want additional children.

He attached an alleged email from Khloe.

I AM GIVING YOU THE REMAINING EMBRYOS.

I DON'T WANT THEM.

DO WHATEVER YOU THINK IS BEST.

Khloe read it once and laughed.

"He writes me like a villain in a bad television show."

Mara took the printout.

"You never sent it?"

"I have never said do whatever you think is best to Harrison in my life."

"Smart woman."

Adrian examined the email header.

"The address is yours."

"Could he access it?"

Khloe thought.

"He knew my old password."

"When did you change it?"

"After I learned about Bianca."

"When was this email supposedly sent?"

Mara checked.

"Two days before you changed the password."

Adrian looked at Khloe.

"He planned the timing."

"Of course he did."

Mara was already contacting the email provider for access logs.

At 1:10 p.m., another problem arrived.

Bianca's new attorney called Adrian directly.

Her name was Simone Keller, a former prosecutor known for representing defendants who intended to cooperate.

"My client wants to meet."

Adrian glanced at Khloe.

"About what?"

"About Harrison Cole."

"She can speak to Detective Ortiz."

"She has."

"Then why me?"

Simone lowered her voice.

"Because there are things she will say only if Khloe hears them."

Khloe held out her hand for the phone.

Adrian shook his head.

She held it out again.

He sighed and handed it to her.

"This is Khloe."

Simone paused.

"Mrs. Cole, my client understands you have no reason to trust her."

"That's the first accurate thing I've heard from her side."

"She wants to correct part of what Harrison did."

"She can start by pleading guilty."

"That is being discussed."

Khloe's eyes narrowed.

"What does she want from me?"

"Nothing directly."

"Everyone connected to Harrison wants something."

Simone hesitated.

"She wants you to know that the courthouse confrontation was not supposed to happen the way it did."

Khloe's voice went cold.

"She put both hands on me."

"She admits that."

"She pushed me."

"She admits physical responsibility for the fall."

"Then what exactly was not supposed to happen?"

Simone spoke carefully.

"Harrison told Bianca to confront you."

Adrian moved closer.

Khloe's hand tightened around the phone.

"Why?"

"He wanted a public argument."

"For what?"

"To create evidence that you were unstable and aggressive before the emergency custody filing."

Khloe felt the room tilt in a different way.

"He sent her to provoke me."

"According to my client, yes."

"Did he tell her to push me?"

"She says no."

"Convenient."

"I understand why you would say that."

Khloe's eyes filled with anger.

"Did he tell her the cameras were disabled?"

Simone went silent for two seconds.

"Yes."

That matched Bianca's statement at the airfield.

Khloe handed the phone back to Adrian.

"Set the meeting."

He looked surprised.

"You sure?"

"No."

She stood carefully.

"Set it anyway."

The meeting took place at Adrian's office under conditions that resembled a deposition more than a conversation.

Bianca entered through a private elevator wearing a loose navy maternity dress and no makeup.

Without the yellow dress, courthouse heels, and polished confidence, she looked younger.

Khloe hated noticing that.

Bianca stopped when she saw her.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Khloe sat at the end of the conference table with Adrian beside her.

Simone guided Bianca into the opposite chair.

A court reporter was present.

Detective Ortiz observed from the wall.

Adrian turned on a recorder.

"This conversation is being preserved with everyone's consent."

Simone nodded.

Bianca did not take her eyes off Khloe.

"I'm sorry."

Khloe's expression did not change.

"Do not start there."

Bianca swallowed.

"Okay."

"Start with why you came to the courthouse."

Bianca looked down at her hands.

"Harrison told me you were going to accuse me of stealing money and try to have me arrested."

"Did you believe him?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he showed me messages."

"Fake ones?"

"I know that now."

Khloe laughed once.

"You believed messages from the married man who was sleeping with you."

Bianca flinched.

"I believed a lot of things I shouldn't have."

"That does not explain the shove."

Bianca's eyes finally met hers.

"No."

"Explain it."

"You grabbed my wrist."

Khloe stiffened.

Detective Ortiz spoke from the wall.

"The footage shows Mrs. Cole attempting to remove your hand from her arm."

Bianca nodded quickly.

"I know."

She looked back at Khloe.

"In that second, I thought you were attacking me."

"So you pushed an eight-months-pregnant woman backward toward stairs."

Bianca's face crumpled slightly, but she did not cry.

"Yes."

"And then you stood there."

"I froze."

"You tried to access the video four minutes later."

"Harrison called me."

Adrian leaned forward.

"From where?"

"His car."

"What did he say?"

Bianca took a breath.

"He said the camera was supposed to be off."

No one moved.

"Then he told me to log into North Vale and pull the file before security locked the system."

Detective Ortiz wrote something.

Adrian asked the next question.

"Did he tell you to delete it?"

"He said, 'Make sure it never becomes a problem.'"

Khloe's face remained still.

"And the pregnancy?"

Bianca placed both hands over her stomach.

"Harrison told me the embryo had been legally donated."

"Did you ever ask me?"

"No."

"Did that seem normal?"

Bianca looked ashamed.

"No."

"Then why did you do it?"

"Because I wanted what he promised."

Khloe's voice sharpened.

"My child?"

"A family."

"With my child."

Bianca's eyes filled.

"I did not know it was your genetic embryo until after I was already pregnant."

Adrian watched her closely.

"When did you learn?"

"Six weeks ago."

"The date of the prenatal report."

"Yes."

"And you stayed."

Bianca nodded.

Khloe looked at her for a long moment.

"Why?"

Bianca answered honestly enough to make it uglier.

"Because by then I loved her."

Khloe inhaled sharply.

Bianca's hand tightened over her stomach.

"I know she is yours genetically."

"She is mine in every way that matters."

Bianca's eyes flashed.

"I've carried her for thirty-two weeks."

The room went silent.

There it was.

The legal problem stripped of forged documents and expensive lawyers.

Two women each had a claim rooted in something real.

One had supplied the embryo without consent.

The other had lived every day of the pregnancy inside her own body.

Harrison had created a collision between them and expected to benefit from whichever woman survived it emotionally.

Khloe slowly sat back.

"What did he tell you would happen to me?"

Bianca looked toward Simone.

Simone nodded.

"He said after Noah was born, you would have a breakdown."

Khloe's mouth tightened.

"How convenient."

"He said Nathan Voss would document it."

Adrian interrupted.

"Document what?"

"That you were dangerous."

"Based on what examination?"

"None."

Bianca's voice dropped.

"Harrison said the paperwork would be enough to get you admitted to Red Canyon for seventy-two hours."

Khloe stared at her.

"And while I was there?"

Bianca swallowed.

"He said he would file for emergency custody of Noah."

"And your baby?"

"He said the carrier agreement would make me the legal mother."

Khloe's face went cold.

"So you knew the plan."

"I knew pieces."

"Enough pieces."

Bianca's eyes dropped.

"Yes."

Adrian's phone buzzed.

He ignored it.

It buzzed again.

Mara was standing outside the room and knocked once before entering.

Her face told Adrian the news mattered.

"We got the access logs for Khloe's email."

Khloe turned.

"The donation email?"

Mara nodded.

"It was sent from Harrison's office computer."

Bianca closed her eyes.

Mara continued.

"And we recovered something else from Archive Node B."

Adrian stood.

"What?"

"A draft schedule titled Transition Week."

She placed a printed page on the table.

Day One: Courthouse confrontation.

Day Two: Emergency psychiatric filing.

Day Three: Hospital evaluation.

Day Four: Red Canyon transport.

Day Five: Custody petition and public statement.

Khloe stared at the sequence.

The first day had happened.

The second had almost happened.

The third had been interrupted only because the fall forced a real medical emergency.

Then she noticed a line beneath Day One.

Create visible instability event.

Adrian looked at Bianca.

"You were the event."

Bianca's face went white.

Khloe looked at the final line beneath the schedule.

If K refuses transfer, activate contingency.

"What contingency?"

Bianca whispered.

"I don't know."

Mara placed one more page on the table.

"We do."

It was an invoice from Daniel Reeve's security company.

Service description: PRIVATE MEDICAL TRANSPORT - NONVOLUNTARY.

Scheduled date: the day after the courthouse hearing.

Destination: Red Canyon Women's Wellness Institute.

Khloe did not blink.

Harrison had not merely planned to call her unstable.

He had arranged transportation before any doctor evaluated her.

The accident on the courthouse stairs had disrupted his schedule.

But the schedule proved something even darker.

The confrontation itself had never been accidental.

Before Bianca left the conference room, Khloe asked for one final answer.

"Did Harrison ever talk about Noah like he loved him?"

Bianca looked startled.

"Khloe."

"Answer me."

Bianca's hands tightened over her stomach.

"Sometimes."

"Sometimes?"

"He talked about having a son more than he talked about Noah himself."

Khloe looked down.

Bianca continued reluctantly.

"He liked the idea of a son carrying his name."

"And Elena?"

The name had not yet been legally chosen, but Khloe already felt it forming inside her mind.

Bianca shook her head.

"He called her insurance."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Explain."

"He said if things went badly with custody of Noah, the second baby guaranteed he would still have a child under his roof."

Khloe stared at her.

"He called my daughter insurance."

Bianca's eyes filled.

"Yes."

Something inside Khloe became unexpectedly calm.

For months, Harrison's greatest weapon had been her need to understand whether some small piece of his old affection still existed beneath everything he had done.

Bianca had just removed the need to ask.

A person who described children as insurance was not confused about love.

He had replaced love with ownership long before anyone else understood the difference.

Khloe looked at Detective Ortiz.

"Whatever deal she gets, make sure that sentence is in the record."

Ortiz nodded.

May you like

Bianca lowered her head.

For once, no one in the room defended Harrison from the meaning of his own words.
