Chapter 8 - The Name Behind Victor.

Grace carried one more secret from the hospital.
Before Richard Vale died, he had apologized to her in the parking garage.
He said he had confused protecting his daughter with protecting himself from her disappointment.
Grace never forgot the sentence.
Amelia heard it seven years later and understood that her father's final shame had been knowing the difference too late.
Grace's account forced Amelia to remember details she had buried beneath sedation.
She remembered her father arriving at the hospital hours before labor began.
Richard had kissed her forehead and avoided Ethan's eyes.
At the time, she thought he was frightened about becoming a grandfather.
Now she understood he had already agreed to destroy the research archive that night.
"He knew there would be a fire," Amelia whispered.
Grace nodded.
"A controlled one."
"That's what Victor promised."
Amelia stood and walked to the window.
"My father asked me whether Lily's nursery had smoke detectors."
Ethan stared at her.
"He asked what?"
"I thought he was being overprotective."
Her voice cracked.
"He was wondering what Victor might do next."
Ethan joined her.
"You didn't know."
"I knew he was hiding something."
"That's different."
Amelia looked at him.
"Is it?"
"Yes."
"You trusted Victor after the fire."
The words were not an accusation.
They still hurt.
Ethan nodded.
"I did."
Amelia touched the glass.
"Then maybe that's part of what we have to live with."
"We both trusted people who used love as camouflage."
Ethan looked back at Lily sitting with Grace.
"Then she learns something different from us."
Amelia followed his gaze.
"What?"
"That loyalty without truth isn't loyalty."
The boardroom became a crime scene before ten o'clock.
Federal agents photographed the weapon, the forged documents, and every hidden mechanism Victor had installed.
The directors were escorted to separate rooms for interviews.
Ethan's shoulder wound was shallow.
The bullet had grazed him without entering.
Dr. Hayes insisted on stitches.
Ethan insisted on hearing Grace first.
Grace Mercer sat beneath a blanket in a secure conference room.
Amelia held one of her hands.
Lily sat between her parents.
For the first time in seven years, the three Blackwoods occupied the same room without a locked door between them.
It should have felt like a reunion.
Instead, Grace's final sentence hung over them.
Victor had not started the fire.
"Then who did?" Ethan asked.
Grace looked toward the federal agents.
"Your father."
Ethan thought he had misheard.
"My father died ten years ago."
Grace shook her head.
"I'm not talking about the night of the hospital fire."
"I'm talking about the plan that created it."
Amelia squeezed Grace's hand.
"Start at the beginning."
Grace looked at Ethan.
"Your father discovered Victor had been stealing from Blackwood Industries years before you married Amelia."
"He hid losses through medical subsidiaries and overseas research accounts."
Ethan knew about an old internal investigation.
His father had shut it down without explanation.
Grace continued.
"Your father decided not to expose Victor publicly."
"He thought scandal would destroy the company."
"So he created a private file containing everything."
"He called it Ashfall."
Ethan frowned.
"I've never heard that name."
"Victor had."
Grace explained that Ethan's father arranged for Ashfall to be released if Victor ever tried to seize control of the family trust.
The trigger was supposed to be simple.
If Ethan died without an heir, the file would automatically go to regulators before Victor inherited anything.
"Then Lily was born," Grace said.
"And everything changed."
Victor no longer needed only Ethan dead.
He needed Lily erased and Amelia neutralized.
But the fire itself required hospital access.
Victor did not have enough.
Someone else did.
Ethan leaned forward.
"Who?"
Grace looked at Amelia.
Amelia's face went pale.
"My father."
Ethan stared at her.
Amelia's father, Richard Vale, had served as chief administrator of St. Matthew's Hospital.
He had died six months after the fire in an apparent boating accident.
Ethan remembered him as strict, distant, and fiercely protective of Amelia.
Grace spoke carefully.
"Richard did not know Victor planned to kill you all."
"He thought the fire would destroy one records wing."
"Why would he help destroy records?" Ethan asked.
Amelia answered before Grace could.
"Because he was hiding something."
She closed her eyes.
"Clinical trials."
Grace nodded.
Blackwood Strategic Health had funded unauthorized drug studies through the hospital.
Richard Vale approved them.
Victor used the trials to move millions of dollars through false research contracts.
When Ethan's father began investigating, Richard panicked.
Victor promised to destroy the evidence.
The hospital fire was meant to erase the research archive.
Instead, Victor expanded the plan.
He scheduled the fire for the night Amelia gave birth.
"My father helped create the door," Amelia whispered.
"Victor walked through it."
Ethan reached for her hand.
She pulled away at first.
"You don't have to protect me."
"I'm not protecting him."
Ethan's voice was gentle.
"I'm holding you."
Amelia looked at his hand.
Then she took it.
Grace continued.
On the night of the fire, she had been assigned to Amelia's floor.
She heard a maintenance worker tell another nurse that the alarm system had been disabled in one corridor.
Minutes later, smoke entered from the records wing.
Grace moved Amelia and the newborn toward a stairwell.
Victor's men intercepted them.
"They took Amelia," Grace said.
"I ran with Lily."
"I hid her in a linen cart until the smoke cleared."
"Then I copied the birth record and called Richard Vale."
Amelia looked up sharply.
"My father knew Lily survived?"
Grace nodded.
"He came to meet me."
"He was horrified."
"He said Victor had lied to him."
"He promised to help expose everything."
Ethan felt the next part before she spoke.
"Victor found him."
"Yes."
The boating accident had been murder.
Richard Vale died trying to undo the crime he had helped begin.
Grace herself was kidnapped two days later.
Victor kept her alive because he could never locate every copy of the birth record.
"How many copies?" Marcus asked.
Grace smiled weakly.
"Three."
"Where?"
"One was with Richard."
"One I hid."
"One I mailed to a lawyer."
Ethan leaned forward.
"Which lawyer?"
Grace looked at Margaret Shaw through the glass wall of the conference room.
"Her husband."
Margaret was brought inside.
When Grace said the name Thomas Shaw, Margaret sat down heavily.
"Thomas died four years ago."
"Did he ever mention a hospital file?" Ethan asked.
Margaret stared at the floor.
"He left a sealed envelope in our home safe."
"He made me promise never to open it unless someone named Grace Mercer contacted me."
Grace's eyes filled.
"I tried."
Margaret looked at her.
"You were alive?"
"Victor made sure I couldn't reach anyone."
Margaret stood.
"The envelope is still there."
Marcus sent agents immediately.
Ethan checked the time.
Victor had escaped the tower less than forty minutes earlier.
Police had not found him.
His safety line had led to an unfinished elevator shaft and a service exit beneath the alley.
He had planned the route in advance.
A federal agent entered with new information.
"We found Victor's vehicle."
"Where?"
"Abandoned near the river."
"Blood inside?"
"No."
"Phone?"
"Burned."
Ethan knew Victor was not running blindly.
He was going somewhere specific.
Amelia looked at Grace.
"Where did he keep you?"
"Different facilities."
"Any place he called safe?"
Grace hesitated.
"There was a house."
"What house?"
"He called it Ash House."
Ethan's father had owned an isolated estate north of the city.
It had been empty since his death.
The property name was Ashcroft.
Ethan stood.
"He's going there."
Marcus moved for the door.
Then Lily spoke.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She had been quietly examining the recorder clipped beneath her collar.
"He said something when he took me."
"What?" Ethan asked.
"He said he had to get the original before you found the copy."
Grace's face changed.
"Ashfall."
Ethan understood.
Victor was not going to Ashcroft to hide.
He was going to destroy the file that could prove every financial crime behind the murders.
Marcus's phone rang.
The agent at Margaret's house had opened Thomas Shaw's envelope.
Inside was Lily's certified birth record.
There was also a handwritten note from Richard Vale.
The note contained six words.
ASHFALL IS BURIED WHERE ETHAN PLAYED.
Ethan knew exactly where that meant.
When he was a child, he had spent summers at Ashcroft.
Behind the house stood an old stone greenhouse.
Beneath it was a root cellar his father had converted into a private workshop.
Ethan looked at Amelia.
"Victor is heading there."
Grace gripped his sleeve.
"Then you need to reach it before he does."
"Why?"
Her voice became a whisper.
May you like
"Because Ashfall doesn't just expose Victor."
"It names everyone who helped him."
