Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Beneath the Boardroom.

The hidden floor contained evidence that the conspiracy had not been improvised after the fire.

Marcus opened a cabinet labeled CONTINUITY and found binders arranged by year.

Each binder contained a version of Ethan's future written without his knowledge.

One scenario assumed Ethan would remarry and have another child.

Another described how tabloids could be fed stories questioning the new child's paternity.

A third outlined a plan to trigger a shareholder revolt if Ethan ever tried to remove Victor from the company.

Ethan turned pages faster.

His grief, marriage, health, and reputation had all been reduced to contingency planning.

"He modeled my life," Ethan said.

Daniel Price looked sick.

"Victor called it risk management."

Amelia, still absent somewhere beyond the vault, had her own binder.

It contained photographs taken through observation windows.

Some showed her asleep.

Some showed her refusing medication.

One showed her pressing both hands against reinforced glass while Lily stood on the other side as a toddler.

Ethan stared at that photograph until the edges bent in his grip.

A note beneath it read: MATERNAL ATTACHMENT REMAINS STRONG.

USE SEPARATION AS COMPLIANCE LEVER.

Marcus swore under his breath.

Ethan turned another page.

There were reports on Lily too.

Vocabulary growth.

Memory retention.

Recognition responses to photographs of Ethan.

Victor had not merely hidden the child.

He had studied whether she remembered enough to become dangerous.

"This is why Nora kept pulling her away from me," Ethan said.

Daniel nodded.

"Victor received monthly reports from the mansion."

Ethan looked at him.

"From Nora?"

"Sometimes.

Sometimes from someone else."

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Your physician."

The answer was only a name in the shadows then.

Ethan did not yet understand how much it would cost him later.

Ethan found one more document in Daniel's folder.

It was a draft press release dated seven years earlier.

The headline announced that Ethan Blackwood had suffered a breakdown after losing his wife and child.

The release had never been used.

Victor had prepared it in case Ethan questioned the deaths publicly.

Even Ethan's grief had been given a communications strategy.

Daniel Price became more frightened with every file Marcus opened.

The legal officer had always dressed like certainty itself.

Now sweat darkened his collar.

"Victor told us Amelia died," Daniel said.

Ethan looked at the forged incapacity declaration.

"You signed as witness."

"I witnessed your signature on other documents."

"Not this one."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Then why sign?"

Daniel stared at the floor.

"Because Victor showed me photographs of my son."

Marcus paused.

"What photographs?"

"Outside school."

"At soccer practice."

"Sleeping on a flight to Boston."

The room went quiet.

Ethan understood the method.

Victor did not need every accomplice to be greedy.

Some only needed to be terrified.

"Why didn't you come to me?" Ethan asked.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You were barely speaking to anyone after the fire."

"Victor controlled your schedule, your calls, even which directors got private time with you."

Ethan remembered the first two years after Amelia's supposed death.

Victor had framed isolation as protection.

He canceled meetings on Ethan's behalf.

He discouraged travel.

He told the board Ethan needed peace.

Ethan had thanked him for it.

That realization made him nauseous.

"How many people did he threaten?"

Daniel looked at the scattered files.

"Enough that silence started looking normal."

Amelia's empty medical chair waited beyond the next room.

Ethan stared toward it.

"Normal is how men like Victor survive."

Marcus nodded.

"Then today we make it abnormal."

Blackwood Tower rose forty-eight stories above the city.

Ethan had worked there since he was twenty-two.

He knew every executive floor, every boardroom, and every private elevator.

He had never heard of Level B.

Marcus studied the tower's old construction plans in the SUV.

"There are two basement levels listed."

Ethan pointed at the message.

"Then there's a third one that isn't."

Nora sat in the rear vehicle under guard.

State police had taken custody of the Hawthorne staff they found on site.

Ethan refused to surrender Nora yet.

She knew too much.

More importantly, Victor might still believe she was useful.

That made her bait.

Lily sat beside Ethan with Amelia's locket clenched in one fist.

"I want to see Mommy."

"You will."

"Promise?"

Ethan looked at her.

He had learned what promises could cost when powerful people controlled the truth.

"I promise I'll do everything I can."

Lily nodded.

It was not the perfect answer.

It was an honest one.

They arrived at Blackwood Tower before dawn.

The lobby was nearly empty.

Victor's security director had already issued an overnight lockdown order.

Marcus presented his credentials to the night supervisor.

"Open the executive elevators."

The supervisor hesitated.

"Mr. Victor Blackwood ordered no access until seven."

Ethan stepped into view.

"My name is still on the building."

The supervisor went pale.

"Open them."

The elevators responded.

Marcus split the team.

Half went to the main board floor.

The others followed Ethan toward the service corridor beneath the lobby.

Lily remained with two armed officers in a secured executive suite.

She resisted until Ethan knelt beside her.

"I need you to do something brave."

"What?"

"Stay where I know you're safe."

Lily studied him.

"You'll come back?"

"Yes."

She hugged him without warning.

Ethan held her tightly.

Then he left before she could see how much the moment affected him.

The service elevator recognized Ethan's badge but offered only B1 and B2.

Marcus removed the access panel.

Behind it was a third physical button with no label.

He pressed it.

The elevator descended below B2.

The doors opened into a corridor lined with old Blackwood family photographs.

Ethan stared at them.

The hidden floor had been built like a private command center.

One room contained archived legal files.

Another held surveillance equipment.

A third had a hospital-grade bed.

Empty.

Fresh restraints lay open on the mattress.

Marcus touched the sheet.

"Warm."

Ethan's pulse jumped.

They heard voices farther down the corridor.

Victor's chief legal officer, Daniel Price, emerged carrying a folder.

He froze when he saw Ethan.

"You're alive."

Ethan smiled without warmth.

"Disappointed?"

Daniel turned to run.

Marcus caught him and pinned him against the wall.

The folder hit the floor.

Papers scattered.

Ethan picked up the top document.

It was a declaration of incapacity.

His name was printed at the top.

The signature at the bottom looked almost perfect.

A second page transferred Ethan's voting authority to Victor.

A third challenged the legitimacy of any future claimant identifying herself as Ethan's daughter.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"You prepared this?"

Daniel's face crumpled.

"Victor said you were dying."

"So you forged my signature?"

"I was told it was authorized."

Marcus laughed once.

"That's not how forgery works."

Ethan flipped through the folder.

A sealed envelope was marked LILY CONTINGENCY.

Inside was a psychiatric evaluation calling Lily delusional and unstable.

The doctor's signature belonged to Malcolm Voss.

The same physician who had pronounced Amelia dead.

Ethan's anger became almost quiet enough to frighten himself.

"Where is my wife?"

Daniel shook his head.

Marcus tightened his grip.

"Where?"

"Victor moved her."

"To where?"

"The old archive vault."

They found the vault at the end of the hall.

The steel door required two access codes.

Daniel provided one.

Ethan's old chairman code still worked for the second.

The door opened.

Inside, Amelia lay strapped to a reclining medical chair.

An IV line ran into her arm.

A man in surgical gloves stood beside her.

Dr. Malcolm Voss.

He reached for a syringe.

Ethan crossed the room before anyone could stop him.

He struck Voss's wrist and sent the syringe skidding across the floor.

Marcus restrained the doctor.

Ethan dropped beside Amelia.

"Amelia."

Her eyelids fluttered.

For one terrible moment, nothing happened.

Then she whispered his name.

"Ethan?"

He bent over her hand.

"I'm here."

Tears escaped the corners of Amelia's eyes.

"Lily."

"She's alive."

Amelia's fingers tightened weakly around his.

"You found her."

"She found me."

Amelia tried to smile.

Then the lights went out.

Emergency red lamps activated.

Marcus swore.

Voss began laughing.

"You really think Victor didn't plan for this?"

A mechanical alarm began counting down.

Ethan looked at the wall display.

03:00.

02:59.

02:58.

Marcus demanded an explanation.

Voss smiled through blood on his lip.

"The archive vault is fireproof."

"The rest of the floor isn't."

Ethan smelled gasoline.

Seven years earlier, Victor had hidden a crime inside a hospital fire.

Now he intended to bury the truth inside another one.
