Chapter 6 - Nine O'Clock.

Inside the boardroom, Lily watched directors whisper about her as though she could not hear them.
One asked whether she was really Ethan's child.
Another wondered what her existence would do to the share price.
Lily stared at the table and realized rich adults could make a child sound like a financial event.
That realization made her fear turn into anger.
Before entering the hidden lift, Amelia asked Marcus for one thing.
"A mirror."
He looked confused but found a small one in a first-aid kit.
Amelia studied her reflection under the garage lights.
She touched the scar beside her temple.
Ethan watched silently.
"I haven't looked at myself properly in years," she said.
"They removed mirrors after I tried to use one to signal a camera."
She turned the glass slightly.
"Victor used to tell me Ethan would never recognize this face."
Ethan stepped closer.
"He was wrong."
Amelia's eyes met his through the mirror.
"You recognized me in one second."
"Less."
She gave him the smallest smile.
Then she handed the mirror back to Marcus.
"Good."
"If Victor sees me, I want him to understand he failed before I say a word."
Ethan looked at her borrowed coat and hospital gown.
"You don't have to prove anything to him."
"I'm not proving it to him."
She looked toward the elevator.
"I'm proving it to myself."
When the doors opened on the hidden records floor, Amelia walked out first.
Her knees shook.
Her spine did not.
Through the one-way glass, she watched Victor touching Lily's shoulder.
Every instinct in her body demanded she run through the wall.
Instead she waited for Ethan's signal.
Seven years had taught her patience under cruelty.
Now she used that skill against the man who taught it to her.
At 8:12 a.m., the main boardroom looked exactly as it had on every important morning of Ethan's career.
The same black marble table reflected the same cold ceiling lights.
The same city skyline stretched beyond the glass walls.
The same portraits of dead Blackwoods watched from the far end of the room.
Only Lily made the scene impossible.
She sat in Ethan's chair.
Her small feet did not reach the floor.
Victor stood behind her with one hand resting lightly on her shoulder.
The gesture looked almost paternal from a distance.
Lily knew better.
"Sit still," Victor murmured.
"I am sitting still."
"Then stop looking at the doors."
"My daddy is coming."
Victor smiled.
"That depends on how much he loves your mother."
Lily looked up at him.
"He loves both of us."
The certainty in her voice irritated him more than defiance would have.
Victor leaned closer.
"Your father spent seven years believing you were dead."
"That doesn't sound like love to me."
Lily's eyes filled, but she did not cry.
"You lied to him."
Victor straightened.
"Adults call that strategy."
Across town, Ethan sat in the rear of an armored SUV with Amelia.
She wore a borrowed coat over a hospital gown.
Her wrists still carried red marks from the restraints.
Every few minutes, she glanced at Ethan as if verifying that he had not disappeared.
Marcus drove while two security vehicles followed.
"We cannot walk into the boardroom the way Victor expects," Marcus said.
Ethan stared at the photograph on his phone.
"We don't have a choice."
Amelia spoke quietly.
"Yes, we do."
Ethan turned.
"He wants me afraid."
Her voice was weak, but the old intelligence was returning.
"Victor always became careless when he thought fear was doing his work for him."
Ethan remembered that about his uncle.
Victor was brilliant when challenged.
He was arrogant when obeyed.
"What are you thinking?"
Amelia closed her eyes for a second.
"Seven years ago, he didn't keep me alive because he needed me alive."
"He kept me alive because he needed something from me."
Ethan leaned closer.
"What?"
"My signature."
Amelia explained that the Blackwood family trust had a second restriction Victor had never been able to bypass.
If an heir was born before Ethan's death, the child's surviving legal guardian could freeze any transfer of family voting shares.
Amelia had been that guardian.
Victor could not simply kill her after Lily survived.
He first needed Amelia to sign documents surrendering Lily's rights.
"I refused," she said.
"For seven years?"
"For seven years."
Ethan stared at her bruised hands.
"What did they do to you?"
Amelia looked toward the window.
"Everything they thought would make me sign."
Silence filled the SUV.
Ethan wanted names.
He wanted rooms.
He wanted dates.
He wanted something he could turn into punishment.
Amelia touched his hand.
"Not now."
He nodded.
She was right.
Lily came first.
Marcus's phone rang.
He listened, then looked in the mirror.
"Federal agents are moving on Victor's known properties."
"And the board?" Ethan asked.
"Still assembling."
"They think the meeting is normal."
Ethan almost laughed.
"Nothing about this family has been normal for seven years."
At 8:31, Victor entered the boardroom's private antechamber.
Daniel Price stood inside with three directors.
One was Margaret Shaw, the oldest independent member of the board.
She stared at Lily through the glass.
"Who is the child?"
Victor closed the door.
"A complication."
Margaret frowned.
"You told us Ethan suffered a fatal cardiac event overnight."
"He was expected to."
Daniel looked at him sharply.
Victor corrected himself.
"He did."
Margaret's gaze became suspicious.
"Which is it?"
Victor placed Ethan's forged incapacity documents on the table.
"By nine o'clock, it will no longer matter."
Margaret did not touch the papers.
"I won't vote without independent confirmation."
Victor smiled.
"You already have."
He showed her a proxy bearing her digital signature.
Her face drained.
"I never signed that."
"You should be more careful with passwords."
Margaret stepped backward.
"This is criminal."
Victor's smile vanished.
"This is succession."
In the boardroom, Lily quietly slipped one hand into her pajama pocket.
Victor had taken her phone.
He had not found the tiny recorder Marcus had clipped beneath her collar before the kidnapping.
Lily pressed the side twice, just as Marcus had taught her.
A light smaller than a pinhead turned green.
Every word in the antechamber began streaming to Marcus.
In the SUV, his earpiece chirped.
He raised one hand.
"I have Lily."
Ethan leaned forward.
"Where?"
"Boardroom."
"Can you hear her?"
"Not her."
Marcus adjusted the feed.
Victor's voice came through.
"Once Ethan and Amelia arrive, we finish the transfer."
Amelia closed her eyes.
"He thinks he still needs my signature."
Ethan looked at her.
"Does he?"
She shook her head.
"Not anymore."
"Why?"
"Because Lily is seven."
Ethan waited.
"Under the trust, once the child reaches seven, her inheritance interest becomes irrevocable unless a court declares her identity fraudulent."
Ethan understood.
"That's why he has Voss's psychiatric report."
"And why he kept Lily hidden until now."
Marcus spoke into his radio.
"We can use the east service elevator."
Ethan shook his head.
"Victor knows every elevator."
Amelia looked toward Blackwood Tower rising ahead.
"Not every one."
She described a private lift once used by Ethan's grandfather to reach the old records floor without crossing the lobby.
It connected to a parking structure across the alley.
Ethan had forgotten it existed.
Victor may have forgotten too.
At 8:44, the convoy stopped beneath the neighboring building.
Marcus led Ethan and Amelia through a concrete passage.
Federal agents waited at the far end.
Special Agent Claire Bennett showed Ethan a warrant.
"We take Victor alive if possible."
Ethan looked at Amelia.
Then at the elevator doors.
"My daughter is in that room."
Bennett nodded.
"Then we do this carefully."
The old lift groaned upward.
At 8:51, Ethan stepped into the hidden records corridor behind the board floor.
Through a one-way glass panel, he saw Lily in his chair.
Victor walked behind her.
Twelve directors entered one by one.
Some looked confused.
Some looked frightened.
Two shook Victor's hand.
Ethan memorized them.
Amelia stood beside him, barely able to remain upright.
When she saw Lily, both hands flew to her mouth.
Lily turned suddenly toward the wall.
She could not see through the one-way glass.
But something in her expression changed.
"Mommy?" she whispered.
Amelia nearly stepped forward.
Ethan caught her gently.
"Thirty seconds."
Victor took his place at the head of the table.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Ethan Blackwood is unable to attend."
Margaret interrupted.
"Because he's dead or because you failed to kill him?"
Every head turned.
Victor's face changed.
Daniel Price stared at Margaret in horror.
Margaret folded her arms.
"Your own mouth just gave me enough to know something is wrong."
Victor reached inside his jacket.
Marcus moved instantly behind the hidden wall.
But Victor did not draw a gun.
He produced a remote control.
"Then we'll simplify things."
He pressed a button.
Steel shutters began descending over every boardroom exit.
Lily jumped from the chair.
Victor grabbed her arm.
"Sit down."
She kicked his shin.
He cursed.
The hidden records door opened.
Ethan stepped into the boardroom.
"Take your hand off my daughter."
Every director froze.
Victor stared at him.
For the first time that morning, Victor Blackwood looked genuinely surprised.
Then Amelia stepped through the doorway behind Ethan.
Victor's expression broke completely.
Lily screamed one word.
"Mommy!"
Amelia moved toward her.
May you like
Victor pulled Lily against his chest and raised a small black pistol beneath her chin.
"One more step," he said, "and seven years of waiting ends right here."
