Chapter 10 - The Doctor Who Knew Too Much.

Marcus later told Ethan that betrayal from a stranger changes your plans.

Betrayal from a friend changes your memories.

That was what Hayes did.

Every reassuring medical opinion from the past seven years suddenly required reexamination.

Ethan ordered his own health records seized before Hayes's arrest became public.

Investigators found unexplained prescriptions and altered notes, though nothing proved Hayes had tried to kill him before the tea.

The uncertainty was almost worse.

Ethan had to accept that he might never know which moments had been ordinary and which had been managed.

Hayes handed Marcus the key to a private storage locker before agents took him away.

Inside were copies of medication logs he had secretly kept for years.

He claimed he saved them because some part of him expected to confess eventually.

Amelia did not thank him.

Evidence preserved by guilt was still evidence.

Forgiveness was a different matter.

Hayes's confession changed the way Ethan remembered hundreds of ordinary moments.

Samuel had been at Christmas dinners after the fire.

He had prescribed sleeping medication when Ethan went three nights without rest.

He had stood beside Amelia's grave and placed a hand on Ethan's shoulder.

He had once told Ethan that guilt was a disease without a cure.

Now Ethan wondered whether Samuel had been speaking about himself.

"When did you learn she was Amelia?" Ethan asked.

Hayes stared at the floor.

"Six months after the fire."

Amelia inhaled sharply.

"You knew for six and a half years."

"Yes."

"And every time Ethan asked whether there could have been an identification mistake?"

Hayes closed his eyes.

"I told him no."

Ethan remembered those conversations.

He had asked Samuel three times during the first year.

Once after waking from a dream in which Amelia called from behind a wall.

Samuel had said trauma made the mind invent exits from grief.

Ethan almost admired the cruelty of how accurate the sentence sounded.

"You made me doubt my own instincts," Ethan said.

Hayes began to speak.

Ethan raised one hand.

"Don't explain it away."

Hayes stopped.

"I won't."

Amelia looked at Samuel for a long moment.

"Then do one useful thing."

"What?"

"Tell the truth without asking us to make you feel better about it."

Hayes nodded.

That was the moment he finally gave them the location of Ashfall.

Ethan called Dr. Hayes from the chapel.

The doctor answered on the second ring.

"Ethan?"

His voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

"Where are you?" Ethan asked.

"At the mansion."

"Why?"

"You told me to remain available."

Ethan looked at Marcus.

Marcus silently signaled technicians to trace the call.

"Is Nora still there?" Ethan asked.

Hayes paused.

"No."

Ethan's expression changed.

"What do you mean, no?"

"Federal agents took her."

Marcus shook his head.

No agency had transported Nora.

She was supposed to remain under private guard until detectives arrived.

Ethan kept his voice steady.

"Which agents?"

"I didn't ask for badges."

"You didn't ask?"

Hayes became defensive.

"There was chaos, Ethan."

"The tower was burning."

"Victor was missing."

"I assumed they were legitimate."

Marcus wrote a message on his phone and held it up.

TRACE SHOWS HAYES AT MANSION.

Ethan continued.

"Stay there."

Hayes exhaled.

"Of course."

"And Samuel?"

"Yes?"

"Don't leave."

Ethan ended the call.

Amelia looked at the name on Victor's paper.

"You trust him?"

"I did."

"For how long?"

"Fifteen years."

Grace spoke quietly.

"That doesn't mean he was Victor's man for fifteen years."

Ethan looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"Victor bought people when he needed them."

"Some stayed loyal for money."

"Some stayed loyal because he had something on them."

Marcus's team searched the unconscious attacker.

His phone contained recent messages from an unknown number.

One message read: HAYES HAS THE WOMAN.

Amelia understood first.

"Nora."

Ethan nodded.

"Hayes didn't let fake agents take her."

"He took her himself."

They returned to the mansion under federal escort.

By the time they arrived, the front gates stood open.

The guard station was empty.

Ethan's chest tightened.

"Where is everyone?"

Marcus checked the security network.

"Cameras are offline."

Lily looked at the mansion through the windshield.

"This feels like the dark room."

Ethan squeezed her hand.

"You stay with Agent Bennett."

This time Lily did not argue.

She was learning that bravery did not always mean following danger.

Ethan, Amelia, Marcus, and four agents entered through the service wing.

No lights were on.

The mansion's backup power should have activated automatically.

Someone had shut it down manually.

They reached the medical room.

Dr. Hayes was gone.

The locked medication cabinet stood open.

Several vials were missing.

A blood smear marked the floor.

Marcus followed it to the laundry corridor.

They found one of Ethan's guards unconscious in a closet.

His pulse was weak but steady.

"Sedative," Amelia said.

She recognized the smell on the discarded syringe.

The same drug had been used on her at Hawthorne.

Ethan's phone buzzed.

A message appeared from Hayes.

COME TO THE WINTER GARDEN ALONE.

IF ANYONE FOLLOWS, NORA DIES.

Marcus read it over his shoulder.

"He's working for Victor."

Ethan shook his head.

"Or pretending to."

"Why would that matter?"

"Because Nora is still valuable."

Amelia looked at Ethan.

"For testimony."

"And for Lily's history."

Ethan put his phone away.

"I'm going."

Marcus objected.

"No."

"You cover the exits."

"Ethan."

"If Hayes wanted me dead, he had years to make it look natural."

That argument silenced Marcus.

Ethan entered the winter garden through the east hall.

Moonlight filtered through the glass roof.

Nora sat tied to a wrought-iron chair beside the fountain.

Her mouth was taped.

Dr. Hayes stood behind her holding a syringe.

Ethan stopped ten feet away.

"Samuel."

Hayes looked exhausted.

"I told you to come alone."

"I did."

"You didn't."

He glanced toward the shadows where Marcus's team was hidden.

Ethan said nothing.

Hayes laughed bitterly.

"You were never good at pretending you trusted people."

"Apparently I was."

Hayes flinched.

The insult landed.

"Why are you on Victor's list?" Ethan asked.

Hayes lowered the syringe.

"Because I treated him."

"For what?"

"A heart condition."

"And?"

"And I falsified a report six years ago."

Ethan waited.

"Victor overdosed during an argument with one of his employees."

"The employee died."

"Victor survived."

"I signed a report calling the death accidental."

Nora made a muffled sound.

Hayes looked at her.

"Victor kept the original toxicology results."

"He's owned me ever since."

Ethan's expression remained hard.

"Did you poison my tea?"

Hayes shook his head immediately.

"No."

"Did you know Nora would?"

"No."

"Then why take her?"

Hayes looked toward the glass ceiling.

"Because Victor called me after the tower."

"He said if Nora reached federal custody, he would release the toxicology file and destroy my family."

Ethan stepped closer.

"So you kidnapped her."

"I moved her."

"Against her will."

"Yes."

"That's kidnapping."

Hayes looked ashamed.

"I know."

Nora began struggling violently.

Ethan removed the tape from her mouth.

She gasped.

"He isn't telling you everything."

Hayes closed his eyes.

"Nora."

"Tell him about Amelia."

Ethan's gaze snapped back to Hayes.

"What about Amelia?"

Hayes looked at the floor.

Nora answered.

"He was the doctor who kept her sedated."

Amelia stood hidden just beyond the doorway.

She heard every word.

Her face went empty.

Ethan took another step.

"Is that true?"

Hayes's eyes filled with tears.

"I thought she was dangerous."

Nora laughed harshly.

"You knew who she was."

"Not at first."

"But later."

Hayes did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Amelia entered the winter garden.

Hayes looked at her and nearly dropped the syringe.

"Amelia."

She walked toward him slowly.

"How many times did I beg you to tell Ethan I was alive?"

Hayes's mouth trembled.

"I don't know."

"I do."

"Every time you came into that room."

She stopped inches from him.

"You looked me in the face and told me Ethan had moved on."

Hayes began crying.

"Victor said Lily would die if I helped you."

Amelia's voice remained calm.

"So you chose which prisoner deserved the truth."

Hayes lowered his head.

Ethan wanted to strike him.

Amelia's restraint stopped him more effectively than any guard could.

She had survived Hayes.

She deserved to control this moment.

Nora suddenly whispered.

"Victor called him for another reason."

Hayes looked at her sharply.

Nora smiled without humor.

"Tell them where the ledger is."

Ethan stared.

Hayes's face changed.

"I don't know."

Nora shook her head.

"Yes, you do."

"You moved it after Richard Vale died."

The winter garden became silent.

Ethan stepped closer.

"Samuel."

Hayes looked at him.

"Where is Ashfall?"

May you like

Hayes swallowed.

"Inside your father's grave."
