Chapter 3 - The Dark Room.

One crayon drawing showed a red door surrounded by black lines.

Lily said Victor used that door when he wanted nobody to know he had visited.

Marcus photographed it.

Minutes later, his team found a matching service entrance beneath ivy outside the facility.

The detail proved Lily's memories were not inventions.

Each small fact made the adults' old lies harder to defend.

Inside the hidden room, Lily recognized more than the drawings.

She pointed toward a crack in the concrete near the mattress.

"I hid crackers there."

Ethan crouched.

He found a dry crumb buried beneath dust.

The discovery hurt more than the restraints had.

A child with his name and his fortune had once hidden food in a wall because she did not know when she would eat again.

Nora watched his face.

"She wasn't starved."

Ethan stood.

"Do not help yourself with technicalities."

Nora swallowed.

"Victor controlled everything."

"And you controlled whether she slept afraid."

"I stayed with her when I could."

Lily looked at Nora.

"You left when he came."

Nora closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"You told me not to make him angry."

"Yes."

"You said good girls survive."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Nora began to cry.

"I was trying to teach you how to stay alive."

Lily's voice became unexpectedly steady.

"Mommy taught me something different."

Everyone looked at her.

"She said surviving isn't the same as belonging to them."

The words silenced Nora.

Ethan touched Lily's shoulder carefully.

He wanted to tell her she belonged to him.

He stopped himself.

Children were not possessions, even when love made the language tempting.

"You belong with people who make you safe," he said instead.

Lily studied him.

"Are you one of those people?"

Ethan felt the question land with more force than any accusation.

"I want to be."

She nodded once.

It was not forgiveness.

It was permission to try.

The first alarm sounded three seconds after the doors sealed.

Marcus pulled Ethan and Lily away from the center of the corridor.

"Gas masks."

His security team opened emergency packs.

A faint hiss came from the ceiling vents.

Nora screamed from behind the officers.

"It's sleeping gas."

Ethan covered Lily's mouth with his jacket while Marcus fitted a mask over her face.

"How long?" Ethan demanded.

Nora coughed.

"Two minutes before you can't stand."

Marcus pointed toward a maintenance door.

One officer fired a breaching charge into the lock.

The door opened into a narrow mechanical passage.

Everyone moved inside.

Ethan stayed behind until Lily was through.

The corridor outside filled with white vapor.

Victor's voice continued over the speaker.

"You should have stayed in the mansion."

Ethan looked directly into a ceiling camera.

"You should have killed me when you had the chance."

The camera light blinked.

Victor did not answer.

Marcus led them through pipes and electrical cabinets toward an emergency stairwell.

Nora stumbled.

One of the guards kept her moving.

Lily suddenly stopped.

"Wait."

Ethan turned.

"What is it?"

She pointed at a yellow stripe painted along one pipe.

"Mommy showed me that."

Nora's face changed.

"Lily, don't."

Ethan heard the fear.

"Showed you what?"

Lily touched the pipe.

"She said yellow goes to the old laundry room."

Marcus looked at the building diagram on his tablet.

"There is no laundry room."

Lily shook her head.

"There is."

They followed the pipe.

The mechanical passage narrowed and descended.

At the end stood a rusted steel door hidden behind storage racks.

Marcus forced it open.

Inside was a room that had never appeared on any blueprint.

A child's mattress rested on the concrete floor.

Crayon drawings covered one wall.

Ethan stepped closer.

Most showed three stick figures holding hands.

A tall man.

A woman with yellow hair.

A little girl.

Above them Lily had repeatedly drawn a black house with many windows.

His mansion.

Ethan recognized it immediately.

Lily pointed at one picture.

"Mommy told me that's where you lived."

Ethan touched the paper.

The drawing was dated four years earlier.

He imagined Amelia in this windowless room describing a home she feared she would never see again.

Nora sank onto a crate.

"I tried to move them."

Ethan turned sharply.

"Don't lie to me now."

"I'm not."

She looked at Lily.

"Victor found out."

"Found out what?"

"That Amelia was teaching her things."

Nora's voice trembled.

"Your name."

"The mansion."

"Her real birthday."

"Everything."

Lily listened silently.

Nora continued.

"He separated them when Lily was four."

Ethan's fists clenched.

"And you helped him."

"I kept her alive."

"You sold her childhood."

Nora flinched.

"You think I don't know that?"

Ethan stared at her.

For the first time, guilt looked real.

But guilt did not erase seven years.

Marcus found a cabinet built into the wall.

Inside were old videotapes, photographs, and handwritten logs.

One log contained Victor's initials beside payment amounts.

Another listed hospital employees.

Three names had red marks beside them.

Ethan recognized one.

Dr. Malcolm Voss.

The physician who had told Ethan Amelia and the baby were dead.

Another name belonged to a fire investigator.

The third was the nurse who had supposedly died in the blaze.

Marcus photographed every page.

"This is enough to reopen everything."

Nora laughed bitterly.

"If you live long enough to use it."

Ethan looked at her.

"Where did Victor take Amelia?"

"I don't know."

Lily walked toward another wall.

She pulled aside a loose sheet of insulation.

A small vent appeared behind it.

"I used to listen through there."

Ethan crouched beside her.

"To what?"

"Victor talking."

"About Mommy?"

Lily nodded.

"And tomorrow."

Ethan felt Marcus go still beside him.

"What did he say?"

Lily squeezed her eyes shut, remembering.

"He said if the tea didn't work, the boardroom would."

Marcus and Ethan exchanged a look.

"The boardroom would what?" Ethan asked.

"Finish the transfer."

Lily opened her eyes.

"He said there was already a dead man's signature waiting."

Ethan understood immediately.

Victor planned to forge his authorization.

If Ethan died before the board vote, Victor could present documents transferring voting control.

If Ethan survived, Victor had another plan.

Marcus's radio crackled.

"State police are five minutes out."

A second voice interrupted.

"Movement outside."

Marcus answered.

"How many?"

"Two vehicles leaving south access."

Ethan pointed toward the stairwell.

"That's Amelia."

They moved fast.

At the upper level, the gas had thinned.

Marcus's team forced open an emergency exit.

Rain slammed into them.

Two black vans disappeared down a service road.

Marcus sent one SUV after them.

Ethan was about to follow when Lily shouted.

"Daddy!"

He turned.

A red laser dot trembled across his chest.

Marcus tackled him behind a concrete barrier.

A suppressed shot cracked through the rain.

The bullet shattered a light above them.

Security officers returned fire toward the tree line.

Nora screamed and dropped to the ground.

Lily crawled toward Ethan.

He grabbed her and shielded her with his body.

Another shot struck the barrier.

Marcus shouted into his radio.

"Sniper east ridge."

The shooter disappeared before officers reached the trees.

Ethan looked down at Lily.

She was shaking but unhurt.

He held her face between his hands.

"Look at me."

She did.

"You're safe."

Lily swallowed.

"Mommy isn't."

The words sent him back to his feet.

The pursuing SUV reported that one van had crashed near the highway.

The second had escaped.

Ethan, Marcus, Lily, and two officers raced to the crash site.

The van lay on its side against a guardrail.

The driver was unconscious.

The rear doors were open.

Inside, they found medical restraints.

Fresh blood marked the floor.

But Amelia was gone.

Marcus searched the driver's pockets.

He found a disposable phone.

One message was still visible.

DELIVER A.B. TO BOARDROOM LEVEL B BEFORE 8:30.

Ethan read it twice.

May you like

Victor was not taking Amelia away from the board meeting.

He was taking her directly beneath it.
