Chapter 7 - The Child at the Head of the Table.

Margaret Shaw later said the most frightening part was not Victor's gun.
It was how quickly several directors obeyed him before the gun appeared.
They lowered their eyes.
They opened folders.
They prepared to vote.
Victor had spent years teaching them that resistance was more expensive than silence.
Lily's refusal embarrassed every adult who had learned that lesson.
Lily had learned to study adults long before she learned multiplication.
In the boardroom, she watched Victor's hands more than his face.
His left hand held her arm.
His right controlled the gun.
The remote sat in his jacket pocket because he had put it there twice without thinking.
She remembered Marcus telling her at the mansion that frightened people look at exits.
Victor kept looking at the bridge door.
That meant the bridge mattered.
She also remembered something Amelia had told her years ago in the dark room.
"Bad people want you to think they notice everything."
"They don't."
"Nobody notices everything."
So Lily became quiet enough to be overlooked.
While Victor argued with Ethan, she counted his breaths.
While he threatened Margaret, she felt the pressure of his grip change.
When Ethan asked why Victor had spared her, Victor became proud.
Pride loosened his attention.
Lily did not know the word leverage the way adults did.
She understood something simpler.
Victor wanted everyone to believe only he could decide what happened next.
She hated that most of all.
When she saw the remote, she did not think of being heroic.
She thought of the tea cup.
She had moved then because waiting felt worse.
Now the same feeling returned.
She looked at Ethan until he followed her eyes.
For the first time, father and daughter made a plan without speaking.
Nobody in the boardroom breathed normally.
Victor held Lily in front of him like a shield.
The pistol remained angled upward beside her cheek.
Ethan stopped six yards away.
Amelia stood behind him, shaking from exhaustion and rage.
Marcus remained hidden beyond the records door with federal agents.
He could not risk a shot.
Victor knew it.
"Tell your people to stand down," Victor said.
Ethan's eyes never left Lily.
"You have nowhere to go."
Victor smiled.
"I have the only exit that matters."
"Her?"
"Exactly."
Lily's breathing was fast.
Ethan made his own slower so she could see it.
"Look at me, sweetheart."
She did.
"You're okay."
Victor laughed.
"That's a dangerous promise."
Ethan ignored him.
"Remember the dining room?"
Lily nodded.
"You were brave then."
"Be still now."
Her shoulders lowered a fraction.
Victor tightened his grip.
"Enough."
Amelia stepped beside Ethan.
"Victor."
He looked at her.
For seven years, she had heard his voice through locked doors.
Now she faced him in daylight.
"You need my signature," she said.
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"Not anymore."
"Then why keep me alive?"
A faint smile appeared.
"Insurance."
"Against what?"
"Against him."
Victor nodded at Ethan.
"Ethan has always been predictable where you're concerned."
Ethan understood the cruelty of it.
Amelia had not only been a legal obstacle.
She had been leverage preserved for the day Victor needed to control him.
Margaret Shaw stood slowly from her chair.
"This meeting is over."
Victor turned the gun toward her without releasing Lily.
"Sit down."
Margaret remained standing.
"You forged my proxy."
"Sit down."
"You kidnapped a child."
Victor's voice sharpened.
"Margaret."
"And whatever happens next, twelve people in this room have seen it."
Victor smiled.
"Not all twelve are leaving."
Several directors recoiled.
One man near the door began pressing the emergency release.
The steel shutter did not move.
Ethan glanced at the ceiling.
He noticed small vents above the windows.
The memory of Hawthorne returned.
Gas.
Victor saw his eyes move.
"Good."
He lifted the remote.
"You still notice things."
Amelia whispered.
"Ethan."
He already understood.
Victor continued.
"At nine fifteen, this room becomes a medical tragedy."
"A grieving executive suffers a breakdown."
"His supposedly dead wife appears, confused and unstable."
"Several elderly directors experience fatal complications."
"And a traumatized child survives to tell a story no one believes."
Lily stared at him.
"You're a monster."
Victor looked down.
"Children should not interrupt adults."
She stamped down on his foot.
Victor jerked.
The gun moved away from her face for half a second.
Ethan charged.
Victor fired.
The shot exploded through the room.
Glass shattered behind Ethan.
Marcus and federal agents burst through the records door.
Victor dragged Lily toward the side wall.
A hidden panel opened.
He disappeared through it with her.
Ethan reached the opening seconds later.
The passage descended steeply.
"Lily!"
Her voice echoed below.
"Daddy!"
Ethan followed.
Marcus shouted for him to wait.
He did not.
The passage ended in an old mechanical gallery above the tower's atrium.
Victor ran along a narrow service bridge with Lily.
The city was visible forty floors below through interior glass.
Amelia emerged behind Ethan.
"Victor!"
Victor stopped halfway across the bridge.
He turned with the gun pressed against Lily's side.
"Stay back."
Ethan raised both hands.
"Let her go."
"You first."
"What do you want?"
Victor laughed.
"You still think this is negotiation."
"Tell me anyway."
"Control."
"You already had control."
"Temporary control."
Victor's eyes hardened.
"Your father built a system where I was always second."
"Second son."
"Second vote."
"Second name on every document."
Ethan took one slow step.
"So you burned a hospital?"
"I corrected succession."
Amelia's voice broke with fury.
"You killed people."
Victor looked at her.
"Collateral damage."
The words silenced even him for a moment.
Lily began crying quietly.
Ethan saw her right hand moving.
She was still wearing the recorder beneath her collar.
Victor had confessed within inches of it.
Marcus's voice came faintly through Ethan's earpiece.
"Keep him talking."
Ethan did.
"Why didn't you kill Lily when she survived?"
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Because the nurse who carried her out copied the birth records."
Ethan's pulse changed.
"What nurse?"
"Grace Mercer."
Amelia gasped.
She knew the name.
"Grace saved Lily."
Victor nodded.
"And threatened to release the records if the child died."
"Where is she?" Ethan asked.
Victor glanced toward the far door.
"Closer than you think."
A buzzer sounded.
The bridge door behind Victor opened.
An elderly woman in blue medical scrubs was pushed into view by a security guard.
Her silver hair was cut short.
A scar crossed her forehead.
Amelia covered her mouth.
"Grace."
The nurse looked at Lily and began crying.
"Baby girl."
Victor pointed the pistol between Grace and Lily.
"This is why I hate unfinished business."
Ethan felt the entire conspiracy become larger.
Grace had survived too.
She had been imprisoned somewhere inside Victor's network for seven years.
Victor gestured toward a control panel.
"Ethan, walk to the center of the bridge."
"Why?"
"Because you're going to sign one document."
"And if I don't?"
Victor placed the gun against Grace's temple.
"I remove a witness."
Then he shifted it toward Lily.
"And then I remove an heir."
Ethan stepped onto the bridge.
Amelia grabbed his arm.
He looked at her.
"Trust me."
He walked toward Victor.
A tablet lay on a maintenance console halfway across.
The document displayed a transfer of all Blackwood voting shares.
Ethan picked up the stylus.
Victor smiled.
"See?"
"Family can make reasonable men very cooperative."
Ethan looked at Lily.
She stared back at him.
Then she looked deliberately at Victor's jacket pocket.
Ethan followed her eyes.
A second remote was visible there.
Lily had noticed something Victor had forgotten.
Ethan signed the tablet.
Victor relaxed for one fatal second.
Lily reached into his pocket, grabbed the remote, and threw it over the bridge rail.
Victor turned toward it instinctively.
Grace dropped to the floor.
Ethan lunged.
The gun fired again.
This time, Amelia screamed.
Ethan felt heat across his shoulder.
He hit Victor hard enough to drive both of them into the railing.
Lily crawled toward Grace.
Marcus's team rushed onto the bridge.
Victor struck Ethan in the wound.
Ethan staggered.
Victor climbed onto the outer maintenance rail.
For a moment he hung above forty floors of open atrium.
Ethan grabbed his wrist.
Victor looked up at him.
"You won't let me fall."
Ethan's face tightened.
"No."
Victor smiled.
"That's why you'll always lose."
Then Victor released his own grip.
But instead of falling, a concealed safety line caught him beneath the bridge.
He swung into darkness below.
Marcus reached the railing.
"He's gone."
Ethan pressed one hand to his bleeding shoulder.
Lily ran into him.
"Daddy."
He held her with his good arm.
Amelia knelt beside Grace.
The elderly nurse looked up at Ethan.
"There's something you need to know."
Ethan turned.
May you like
Grace's face was filled with terror.
"Victor wasn't the one who started the hospital fire."
