Chapter 13 - The Empire on the Auction Block.

Employees began sending messages to Ethan's office while the asset sales were pending.

Some begged him to save the company.

Others begged him to expose it fully, even if their jobs disappeared.

Ethan read both kinds.

Leadership had once meant protecting value.

Now he understood it sometimes meant admitting what that value had cost.

Before Ethan left for the airfield, Margaret stopped him near the boardroom door.

"Your father would have told you to protect the company first."

Ethan looked at her.

"That's exactly why I'm not doing that."

Margaret stiffened.

"Arthur built this from nothing."

"And then protected it by burying crimes."

"He made mistakes."

"People died."

Margaret lowered her voice.

"If Blackwood collapses, innocent employees suffer too."

"I know."

"Then why risk it?"

Ethan looked through the glass wall toward Lily.

"Because Victor's entire system depends on everyone choosing the institution over the person directly in front of them."

Margaret had no answer.

Ethan continued.

"My father chose the company over exposing Victor."

"Richard chose the hospital over the patients."

"Hayes chose his reputation over Amelia."

"Nora chose money and fear over Lily."

"Every one of them called it necessary."

He picked up his coat.

"I'm done calling it necessary."

Margaret looked toward the falling stock price on the screen.

Then she closed the market dashboard.

"Bring him back alive."

Ethan paused.

"Why?"

"Because dead men become legends."

Her expression hardened.

"I want Victor to become evidence."

For the first time that day, Ethan agreed with a board member without reservation.

By four o'clock, Blackwood Industries was in free fall.

Shares dropped faster than regulators could halt trading.

Banks froze credit lines.

Suppliers called demanding reassurance.

Employees watched television screens in factory break rooms while anchors debated whether Ethan Blackwood had lost his mind.

Victor's strategy was brutally simple.

If he could not own the company, he would make sure Lily inherited ashes.

Ethan returned to Blackwood Tower through a side entrance.

The fire damage had been contained to lower mechanical floors.

The main executive levels were open under federal supervision.

Marcus assembled a crisis team in the boardroom.

Only four directors were allowed inside.

Margaret Shaw was one of them.

She looked twenty years older than the day before.

"We can stop the asset sales if we establish you still control the voting shares," she said.

Ethan shook his head.

"Victor filed the incapacity transfer before the fire."

"The forged transfer."

"Forged documents can still freeze real systems until courts act."

Amelia sat beside Lily near the window.

The independent DNA test was underway at a federal lab.

They had been promised preliminary results by evening.

Lily drew quietly on a legal pad.

Ethan noticed three figures holding hands in front of a black building.

This time the building had sunlight above it.

He forced himself to look away and focus.

Margaret opened a folder.

"Victor is trying to sell the medical division to a Luxembourg consortium."

Marcus looked up.

"One of his shell companies."

"Exactly."

"He's not liquidating."

"He's laundering ownership."

Ethan understood.

Victor planned to move the best assets into entities he controlled personally.

Then Blackwood Industries could collapse while Victor emerged wealthy and legally distant.

"How long do we have?"

Margaret checked the filing.

"The first closing is scheduled for six."

Two hours.

Ethan called every bank involved.

Three agreed to delay.

One refused.

That bank's chairman appeared in Ashfall.

Bennett obtained an emergency injunction.

The judge assigned to review it suddenly recused himself.

A replacement could not be found for forty minutes.

Every delay looked accidental alone.

Together they formed Victor's fingerprints.

At 4:43, a company attorney entered carrying a sealed envelope.

"This came from Mr. Merrick."

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a handwritten offer.

DROP ALL CRIMINAL COOPERATION.

PUBLICLY DENY AMELIA AND LILY.

THE ASSET SALES STOP.

At the bottom was a location.

BLACKWOOD PRIVATE AIRFIELD.

HANGAR THREE.

Amelia read it.

"He wants you there."

"He wants me to choose the company over you."

Lily looked up from her drawing.

"Will you?"

The question broke Ethan's heart because she asked it without accusation.

She asked because seven years of captivity had taught her adults could make impossible bargains.

Ethan crossed the room and knelt beside her.

"There is no company worth losing you."

Lily stared at him.

"Even all this?"

She gestured toward the tower.

"Especially all this."

Amelia watched them.

Her eyes filled.

Then Ethan stood.

"But I'm still going to the airfield."

Marcus immediately objected.

"Of course you are."

"We're going together."

Bennett entered from the hallway.

"No, you're not."

Ethan looked at her.

"Victor invited me."

"Victor is a fugitive who has already used a child as a hostage."

"Which is why he won't expect me to bring an army."

Bennett frowned.

"What are you proposing?"

Ethan held up Merrick's letter.

"Give him what he thinks he wants."

At 5:16, Ethan arrived at Blackwood Airfield in a single sedan.

He wore no visible weapon.

A small transmitter rested beneath his collar.

Federal teams remained beyond the perimeter.

Marcus watched through a drone positioned above the hangars.

Hangar Three stood open.

Inside waited Victor, Charles Merrick, and Robert Sloan.

Sloan had somehow been released before federal charges were filed.

That meant another compromised official had intervened.

Ethan stepped inside.

Victor smiled.

A bruise darkened one side of his face from the bridge fight.

"You look tired."

Ethan looked at the private jet behind him.

"You look ready to run."

Victor's smile tightened.

"Business trip."

Merrick placed a document on a folding table.

"Sign the statement."

Ethan read it.

It declared Amelia an impostor.

It declared Lily unrelated to him.

It accused federal investigators of political harassment.

In exchange, Victor promised to cancel the asset sales.

Ethan set the paper down.

"Where is the guarantee?"

Victor laughed.

"My word."

"That's worthless."

Sloan stepped forward.

"Ethan, think about the employees."

Ethan stared at him.

"Don't use them to clean your conscience."

Sloan's face reddened.

"You don't understand what was at stake."

"Money."

"The company."

"Money."

"Thousands of jobs."

"Money."

Victor raised a hand.

"Enough."

He looked at Ethan.

"Sign it."

Ethan picked up the pen.

Through the transmitter, Marcus listened.

Ethan needed Victor to say more.

"Why should I believe you won't sell everything anyway?"

Victor leaned against the table.

"Because I never wanted to destroy Blackwood."

"I wanted to save it from you."

"By murdering my wife?"

Victor's eyes flickered toward Merrick.

"Careful."

"By stealing my daughter?"

"Careful."

"By burning a hospital?"

Victor stepped closer.

"The hospital was Richard's mistake."

Ethan pushed.

"But Amelia was yours."

Victor smiled faintly.

"Amelia was leverage."

"Lily was a legal problem."

"You were the only target that mattered."

Merrick hissed.

"Stop talking."

Victor ignored him.

"Do you know how many times I could have killed you?"

"Apparently not enough."

Victor's face hardened.

"Your father protected you even after death."

Ethan felt the opening.

"Ashfall."

Victor's expression changed.

"You found it."

"Every page."

Sloan went pale.

Merrick backed toward the jet.

Victor stared at Ethan.

"You're bluffing."

Ethan pulled out his phone and displayed a photograph of the ledger page bearing Victor's name.

Sloan cursed.

Merrick moved faster toward the plane.

Victor drew a pistol.

"Give me the phone."

Ethan did not move.

"You know federal agents are listening."

Victor laughed.

"Then they can listen to you die."

He raised the gun.

Sloan suddenly grabbed Victor's arm.

"No more bodies."

Victor struck him across the face.

The pistol discharged into the hangar roof.

Federal teams moved.

Victor shoved Sloan into Ethan and ran toward the jet.

Merrick was already climbing the stairs.

The engines started.

Ethan hit the concrete with Sloan on top of him.

Marcus's voice exploded through his earpiece.

"Stay down."

Agents breached the hangar.

Victor fired twice toward them and boarded the jet.

The door closed.

The aircraft began moving before the stairs fully retracted.

Bennett shouted into her radio.

"Block the runway."

Two armored vehicles raced toward the taxiway.

The jet accelerated anyway.

For several seconds it looked as though Victor would ram through them.

Then one engine suddenly died.

The plane veered.

Its nose rolled into the grass beside the runway.

The second engine shut down.

Agents surrounded the aircraft.

Ethan stood slowly.

"What happened?"

Marcus looked at his tablet.

"Fuel cutoff."

"Who did that?"

A voice behind them answered.

"I did."

Dr. Hayes stood beside an airport maintenance truck under federal guard.

Before Victor summoned Ethan, Hayes had told Bennett about a remote safety system installed on Blackwood aircraft.

He had chosen to cooperate before Victor could use the jet.

Ethan stared at him.

Hayes did not ask forgiveness.

He simply lowered his eyes.

Agents pulled Merrick from the plane first.

Then Victor appeared in the doorway with a gun pressed against the neck of a flight attendant.

The standoff lasted twenty seconds.

Victor looked across the runway at Ethan.

"You think this ends with me?"

Ethan did not answer.

Victor smiled.

"Ask Amelia who signed the first research authorization."

Then an agent talked him into lowering the weapon.

Victor was tackled and handcuffed on the stairs.

His final sentence remained in Ethan's head.

Ask Amelia.

At 6:28, Ethan returned to the tower.

The DNA results were waiting.

The report confirmed a 99.999 percent probability that Ethan and Amelia were Lily's biological parents.

Lily read only the first line she understood.

"So they can't say I'm fake anymore?"

Ethan pulled her into his arms.

"No."

Amelia smiled through tears.

"They never could."

Then Ethan looked at her.

Victor's final words returned.

"Amelia."

Her smile faded.

"What?"

"Who signed the first research authorization?"

Amelia became very still.

Lily looked between them.

"Mom?"

Amelia closed her eyes.

May you like

When she opened them again, she looked at Ethan with seven years of another secret behind them.

"I did."
