Chapter 9 - The Clock Above the Staircase.

Ruiz ordered officers to the mansion before he left the hospital room.

Elena tried to get out of bed.

Nathan stopped her.

"Absolutely not."

"Daniel is going after the deed."

"And you were pushed down a staircase two hours ago."

Elena swung her feet toward the floor anyway.

A nurse appeared in the doorway as though summoned by Nathan's panic.

"Mrs. Howard."

Her tone ended the argument.

"You are staying in that bed until the obstetrician clears you."

Elena stared at Nathan.

"Then you go."

He hesitated.

"I'm not leaving you."

"Nathan."

She lowered her voice.

"If Daniel destroys that deed, Caleb's family loses the only clean path to restitution."

"And Daniel keeps the leverage that started all of this."

Nathan looked toward Margaret.

She nodded reluctantly.

"Go."

Nathan kissed Elena's forehead and left with Ruiz.

Margaret remained behind.

For several minutes, neither woman spoke.

Then Margaret sat beside the bed.

"You hid the deed in the clock."

Elena nodded.

"Ruiz wanted the original somewhere Vanessa would never search."

Margaret gave a tired smile.

"She hates that clock."

"She says it makes the foyer look like a funeral home."

The brief humor vanished quickly.

Margaret folded her hands.

"I should have told Nathan everything years ago."

Elena watched her.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because shame can feel like protection when you've carried it long enough."

She looked toward the fetal monitor.

"I told myself the fraud belonged to the generation before us."

"Then Daniel found it."

"And suddenly the past was alive again."

Elena thought of Vanessa at the top of the staircase.

"The past always collects interest."

Margaret looked at her with surprise.

Then she nodded.

A message appeared on Elena's phone.

It came from Nathan.

CLOCK OPEN. DEED GONE.

Elena's chest tightened.

A second message arrived.

CAMERA REMOVED.

Then a third.

ONE OFFICER INJURED. CALEB MISSING.

Margaret read Elena's face.

"What happened?"

Elena handed her the phone.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Before either could speak, the hospital room door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

She had changed clothes.

The burgundy dress was gone.

She now wore a plain gray sweater and black trousers.

Her makeup had been wiped away.

Without the performance, she looked exhausted.

Margaret rose.

"How did you get in here?"

Vanessa ignored her.

She looked directly at Elena.

"I need five minutes."

Elena's hand moved toward the nurse call button.

Vanessa lifted both palms.

"If I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn't have come alone."

Margaret stepped between them.

"You already hurt her."

Vanessa's eyes filled, but this time the tears looked real.

"I know."

The admission surprised Elena more than denial would have.

Vanessa reached slowly into her sweater pocket.

Margaret tensed.

Vanessa pulled out a small brass key.

"Daniel doesn't have the deed."

Elena stared at her.

"What?"

"Caleb does."

"And Daniel is going to kill him for it."

She placed the key on the bedside table.

"I know where Caleb is going."
