Chapter 10 - Vanessa's Five Minutes.

Margaret wanted security immediately.
Elena wanted answers first.
"Five minutes," Elena said.
Margaret stared at her.
"After what she did?"
"Especially after what she did."
Vanessa remained near the door, as if she understood that one wrong movement would end the conversation.
Elena pointed toward the chair across from her bed.
"Sit."
Vanessa obeyed.
The woman who had screamed accusations in the mansion now looked strangely small beneath the hospital lights.
Elena began without sympathy.
"Why did you push me?"
Vanessa looked at her hands.
"Because I thought you had ruined Nathan's life."
"That's not an answer."
Vanessa swallowed.
"Daniel showed me financial records."
"He said you were transferring Howard assets into accounts controlled by your family."
Elena frowned.
"My parents are dead."
"I know that now."
"You knew it then."
Vanessa flinched.
"He said the accounts were trusts."
"He had documents with your signature."
Elena understood.
Forged signatures.
Fake transfers.
A manufactured motive.
"And you never asked Nathan?"
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Nathan stopped telling me anything when he married you."
Margaret's voice became cold.
"Because you were his former girlfriend, not his wife."
Vanessa looked away.
Elena kept her gaze fixed on her.
"Daniel used your jealousy."
"Yes."
The word came out almost inaudibly.
"But the push was yours."
Vanessa's eyes lifted.
"Yes."
Elena felt anger rise despite the confession.
"I could have lost my baby."
Vanessa's face collapsed.
"I know."
"No."
Elena's voice hardened.
"You knew before you touched me."
Vanessa did not defend herself.
That silence was the first honest thing Elena had ever received from her.
Margaret folded her arms.
"Why are you helping now?"
Vanessa looked toward the brass key.
"Because Daniel changed the plan."
"What plan?"
"He told Caleb to take the deed during the blackout."
"I was supposed to keep everyone downstairs."
Elena stared at her.
"You knew about the blackout."
Vanessa nodded.
"I didn't know Caleb would hurt an officer."
Margaret gave a disgusted laugh.
"That is the line you're drawing?"
Vanessa accepted the contempt.
"Daniel promised me nobody would be seriously hurt."
Elena's voice sharpened.
"He told you to push a pregnant woman down marble stairs."
"He told me you were wearing protection."
The room went completely still.
Elena felt ice move through her.
"How did he know that?"
Vanessa looked confused.
"He said he had someone inside Ruiz's team."
Margaret whispered.
"A police officer?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know."
Elena's mind raced backward through every preparation.
The padded cardigan.
The hidden clock camera.
The timing of Ruiz's arrival.
Daniel had known enough to let the trap happen.
Maybe he had wanted it to happen.
"Why?" Elena whispered.
Vanessa looked at her.
"Because while you were recording me, everyone stopped watching the real target."
The deed.
The camera.
The safe.
Elena's entire plan had been reversed again.
Vanessa pointed toward the brass key.
"Caleb has a storage unit beneath the old Howard textile mill."
"That key opens the service tunnel."
"He told me if anything went wrong, he would hide there before leaving the state."
Elena picked up the key.
"And Daniel knows?"
Vanessa nodded.
"He knows now."
Elena's phone rang.
Detective Ruiz.
She answered immediately.
His first words turned the room cold.
"Elena, do not trust Vanessa."
Vanessa stared at the phone.
Ruiz continued.
"We found Caleb's car."
"There's blood inside."
"And Vanessa's fingerprints are all over the steering wheel."
