Chapter 7 - The Name Behind the Door.

Margaret refused to look at the photograph for more than a few seconds.

Her hands trembled in her lap.

Nathan stood beside the hospital window, staring at nothing.

Elena watched both of them and understood that the Howard family had just become more dangerous than Vanessa alone.

Detective Ruiz broke the silence.

"We don't know that the man is Daniel."

Margaret looked up.

"I bought that watch for his twenty-fifth birthday."

"There were only fifty made."

Ruiz nodded.

"Then we treat it seriously."

Elena pointed toward the photograph.

"Where was it taken?"

Ruiz turned the evidence bag.

A restaurant sign was visible behind Vanessa's shoulder.

"Boston."

"Six weeks ago."

Nathan finally turned around.

"Vanessa told me she was in Chicago that week."

"She attended a charity board meeting."

Ruiz gave him a level look.

"Her phone did."

Nathan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Her phone connected to towers in Chicago."

"A second prepaid device traveled to Boston."

Elena felt a cold satisfaction.

Vanessa had been careful.

Careful people made the most revealing mistakes when they became desperate.

Ruiz continued.

"We believe the prepaid phone belongs to her."

"It contacted Caleb fourteen times."

"It also contacted another prepaid number that disappeared the morning of your fall."

Margaret whispered.

"Daniel."

Ruiz did not confirm it.

A nurse entered to check Elena's blood pressure.

The interruption should have lowered the tension.

Instead, it gave everyone time to think.

Elena noticed Margaret avoiding Nathan's eyes.

There was something else.

Something older than the missing brother.

When the nurse left, Elena spoke gently.

"Margaret."

The older woman looked at her.

"What did Daniel threaten to expose?"

Nathan stiffened.

Margaret's face went blank.

"Nathan told you that?"

"Yes."

"Then Nathan told you too much."

"Or not enough."

Margaret stood.

"This is not the time."

Elena's frustration rose.

"Someone pushed me down a staircase while I was pregnant because of a will connected to this family."

"I think this is exactly the time."

Margaret stopped at the door.

Her shoulders lowered.

"Your father-in-law did something terrible when he was young."

Nathan stared at her.

"Mom."

She ignored him.

"Howard Industries was built on land acquired through a fraudulent foreclosure."

Ruiz took out a notebook.

Margaret continued.

"A family named Mercer lost everything."

Elena's breath caught.

"Mercer."

Ruiz looked toward her.

"Caleb Mercer."

Margaret nodded once.

"Caleb's grandfather."

Nathan stepped away from the window.

"You're saying Dad stole their land?"

"Your grandfather did."

"Your father covered it up."

"Daniel found the original documents."

Elena understood the leverage immediately.

"He threatened to expose the fraud."

"Yes."

Margaret's voice cracked.

"Then he vanished."

Ruiz closed his notebook slowly.

"And Caleb Mercer grew up believing the Howards destroyed his family."

Elena looked at the photograph again.

Vanessa beside the man wearing Daniel's watch.

The plan was larger than jealousy.

Larger than inheritance.

Someone was using Vanessa's obsession with Nathan to settle a seven-decade-old debt.

Nathan's phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

No caller ID.

Ruiz raised one hand.

"Put it on speaker."

Nathan answered.

For a moment, only breathing came through.

Then a man's voice spoke.

"Hello, little brother."

Margaret made a broken sound.

Nathan went white.

The voice continued.

"Tell Elena the fall was only the beginning."
