Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

The Howard mansion fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above the grand foyer seemed to tremble as Elena struck the marble at the bottom of the staircase.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

Nathan Howard stood near the library doors with a glass of water still in his hand.

His mother, Margaret Howard, rose so quickly from the sitting-room sofa that her cane clattered onto the floor.

Two housekeepers froze beside the dining room entrance.

At the top of the staircase, Vanessa Cole stared down at Elena with both hands pressed against her mouth.

Her face showed horror.

Her eyes showed something else.

Calculation.

Then Vanessa made herself cry.

"Oh my God."

She rushed down three steps and stopped as though she were too frightened to continue.

"I didn't mean to do that."

Nathan finally moved.

He ran toward his wife and dropped to his knees beside her.

Elena lay twisted on one side, one palm instinctively curved beneath the small rise of her pregnancy.

Her skin had gone pale.

Her breathing was shallow enough to frighten anyone watching.

Nathan reached for her shoulder.

"Elena."

She did not respond.

Vanessa descended another step.

"She came at me."

Margaret looked up sharply.

"What?"

Vanessa swallowed, forcing her voice to shake.

"She was furious."

"She said she knew I was going to tell Nathan the truth about her."

Nathan looked over his shoulder.

"What truth?"

Vanessa hesitated just long enough to make the answer feel reluctant.

"That she married you for the estate."

Elena heard every word.

She also heard Nathan's breath catch.

That hurt more than the impact with the stairs.

Not because the accusation was new.

Because some part of him was still vulnerable to it.

Elena kept her eyes closed.

Beneath her cream cardigan, her left hand slid carefully toward the phone secured against her waist.

The screen was already awake.

The call had been prepared before Vanessa ever touched her.

One tap would complete it.

Vanessa continued.

"She threatened me upstairs."

"She said if I interfered again, she would make sure I never came back here."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"That doesn't sound like Elena."

Vanessa looked wounded.

"You never hear how she speaks when Nathan isn't around."

Nathan turned back toward Elena.

His fingers trembled as he checked her pulse.

"Call an ambulance."

One of the housekeepers reached for a phone.

Vanessa suddenly descended the remaining stairs.

"Don't touch her phone."

Nathan looked up.

The panic in Vanessa's voice was too sharp.

Too immediate.

Elena noticed it too.

Her thumb found the hidden screen.

She pressed once.

A faint vibration answered against her ribs.

The line connected.

Elena parted her lips only slightly.

"Detective Ruiz."

Her whisper disappeared beneath Vanessa's crying.

"The evidence is ready."

A man's quiet voice came through the concealed earbud beneath Elena's hair.

"We're coming."

Elena released the phone and went still again.

Vanessa crouched several feet away, careful not to come too close.

"This is all her fault."

The words were soft.

But the hidden microphone caught every syllable.

Elena listened to the woman who had tried to destroy her begin building the case that would destroy herself.

And above them, inside the carved eye of the antique clock, a tiny red light kept blinking.
