Chapter 6 - The Dead Brother's Cuff Link.

The ambulance doors closed before Nathan could explain why a dead man's cuff link was lying beside the greenhouse.
Elena watched the mansion disappear through the rear windows as the paramedic attached a fetal monitor to her abdomen.
The first strong heartbeat filled the small compartment.
Elena's eyes closed with relief.
The baby was alive.
For the first time since the fall, fear loosened its grip around her chest.
The paramedic smiled slightly.
"That's a good sound."
Elena nodded, but her mind remained at the mansion.
Daniel Howard had disappeared seven years earlier after a sailing accident off the coast of Maine.
No body had ever been recovered.
Nathan rarely spoke about him.
Margaret refused to speak about him at all.
The family had held a memorial without a coffin.
Now something bearing Daniel's initials had appeared at the exact place where Caleb Mercer vanished.
Detective Ruiz called while the ambulance crossed the river bridge.
Elena answered quietly.
"Tell me Nathan is wrong."
"I can't."
Ruiz's voice carried road noise behind it.
"The cuff link has D.H. engraved on the back."
Elena stared at the monitor.
"Could Caleb have stolen it years ago?"
"Possible."
"But Nathan says Daniel wore that pair the week he disappeared."
Elena looked toward the ambulance doors.
"So Vanessa may not be working alone."
"She was never working alone."
Ruiz paused.
"The question is whether Caleb is the partner or the messenger."
At the hospital, Elena was taken directly to obstetric observation.
Nathan arrived ten minutes later.
His hair was disordered, his shirt cuff torn, and his face looked older than it had that morning.
He stopped beside the bed when he heard the baby's heartbeat.
For several seconds, he could not speak.
Then he leaned forward and pressed his forehead against Elena's hand.
"I'm sorry."
She watched him carefully.
"For what?"
"For believing even one second of what she said."
Elena squeezed his fingers.
"You were terrified."
"That's not an excuse."
He sat beside her.
"There is something I should have told you years ago."
Elena's attention sharpened.
Nathan looked at the door before continuing.
"Daniel did not die because of a storm."
"What do you mean?"
"He disappeared because my father discovered he had been stealing from the company."
Elena said nothing.
Nathan's voice dropped.
"Millions."
"Shell companies, fake suppliers, forged signatures."
"My father confronted him the night before the boat disappeared."
"Daniel threatened to expose something about the family if Dad went to the police."
Elena felt the shape of the story changing beneath her.
"What was he going to expose?"
Nathan looked ashamed.
"Dad never told me."
"But after Daniel disappeared, he rewrote the estate documents."
The missing letter suddenly mattered more.
Elena sat straighter.
"The letter in our safe."
Nathan nodded.
"It wasn't just sentimental."
"It named you as temporary trustee if anything happened to me before our child was born."
Elena stared at him.
"Vanessa knew about the baby changing the will."
"Apparently."
"But she shouldn't have known the trustee clause."
Nathan's eyes darkened.
"No."
The door opened before either could say more.
Margaret entered with Detective Ruiz.
She looked shaken.
Ruiz placed a clear evidence bag on the bedside table.
Inside was a photograph recovered from Caleb's abandoned jacket near the greenhouse.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a man in a baseball cap.
His face was turned away.
But the watch on his wrist was unmistakable.
Nathan rose from the chair.
"That was Daniel's watch."
Margaret sank into the nearest seat.
Then she whispered the words nobody wanted to hear.
"My son is alive."
