Chapter 15 - The Invitation to the Lake.

Detective Ruiz refused to let Elena go to the lake house.

Elena refused to let him decide without hearing her reasoning.

They argued in a private hospital conference room while Nathan, Margaret, and Vanessa watched.

"Daniel asked for me because he thinks I have something," Elena said.

Ruiz shook his head.

"Or because he wants a hostage with maximum value."

"Then sending someone else changes nothing."

"Sending you could get you killed."

Elena's voice remained controlled.

"Not sending me could get Pierce killed and Daniel gone."

Ruiz leaned forward.

"Pierce may have stabbed Caleb."

"I'm not risking you to save him."

Elena looked at Margaret.

"This isn't about saving Pierce."

"It's about ending the chain before somebody else gets pushed, poisoned, stabbed, blackmailed, or buried under this family's secrets."

Margaret flinched at the word family.

Nathan stood beside Elena.

"I'm going with her."

Ruiz stared at him.

"No."

Nathan almost smiled.

"That worked well the first time."

Ruiz rubbed one hand across his face.

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Daniel won't let Nathan near him."

"He hates him too much."

Nathan turned.

"And he likes you?"

Vanessa absorbed the insult.

"He thinks I'm weak enough to control."

Elena looked at her.

"Can he?"

Vanessa met her eyes.

"Not anymore."

Ruiz studied all three of them.

"Nobody improvises."

"Nobody tries to be brave."

"If Daniel tells you to move, you wait for my instruction unless a life is immediately at risk."

Elena nodded.

Nathan did not.

Ruiz pointed at him.

"That includes you."

Nathan reluctantly agreed.

The plan was simple because complicated plans had already failed.

Elena and Vanessa would approach the lake house in Vanessa's car.

Nathan would remain with Ruiz in an unmarked vehicle beyond the tree line.

A tactical team would circle from the water side.

Elena would wear a recording transmitter beneath her collar.

Vanessa would carry the brass key and no weapon.

Before they left the hospital, Margaret caught Elena's hand.

"There is one more thing."

Elena waited.

Margaret's voice became almost too quiet to hear.

"Daniel was not cruel as a child."

"He became cruel when Robert started testing him."

"Testing him how?"

Margaret looked ashamed.

"Robert believed weakness had to be corrected."

"He humiliated both boys."

"But Daniel fought back."

"Nathan learned to survive by becoming perfect."

Elena looked toward her husband across the room.

Suddenly his lifelong need to control every detail made more sense.

Margaret continued.

"Daniel will try to make Nathan choose between you and something else he loves."

"That is how Robert punished him."

Elena squeezed Margaret's hand.

"Then Daniel will be disappointed."

Night had fallen by the time Vanessa's car reached the old lake road.

Rain streaked across the windshield.

The lake house appeared beyond the trees like a dark shape cut from the storm.

Vanessa slowed near the gate.

"Last chance."

Elena looked at her.

"For what?"

"To hate me enough to leave me here."

Elena turned toward the house.

"I do hate what you did."

"That doesn't mean I'm going to let Daniel decide what happens to you."

Vanessa's eyes glistened.

She looked away quickly.

They parked fifty yards from the house.

The front door stood open.

No lights were visible inside.

Elena stepped onto the wet gravel.

Her transmitter clicked softly beneath her collar.

Ruiz's voice came through her hidden earpiece.

"We see you."

Elena and Vanessa walked toward the porch.

Halfway there, the lake house lights switched on all at once.

Dr. Pierce appeared behind the front window, still tied to the chair.

Daniel stood behind him.

And beside Daniel, holding a pistol with both hands, was Caleb Mercer.
