Chapter 2 - The Woman at the Top of the Stairs.

The ambulance had not yet arrived when Vanessa decided the story needed another witness.

She turned toward Helen, the senior housekeeper, with tears shining perfectly beneath her eyes.

"You heard us arguing earlier."

Helen stiffened.

"I heard voices."

"You heard Elena threaten me."

Helen's gaze moved toward Elena on the marble floor.

"I did not hear the words."

Vanessa's expression changed for less than a second.

It was almost nothing.

A tightening around the mouth.

A warning.

Then the frightened mask returned.

"Maybe you were too far away."

Nathan heard the shift.

For the first time since Elena fell, he looked at Vanessa without sympathy.

"Stop telling people what they heard."

Vanessa blinked.

"I'm trying to explain what happened."

"Then explain what you did."

The question landed harder than Nathan intended.

Margaret watched both of them closely.

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"She grabbed me."

"I pushed her away."

"That's all."

Elena remained motionless.

Her hip burned from the fall.

Her shoulder throbbed.

She had practiced the landing with Detective Ruiz and a stunt coordinator hired under the excuse of testing the staircase railings.

Practice had not made marble softer.

Nor had it removed the terror that something might happen to her baby.

But the protective padding beneath her cardigan had taken the worst of the impact.

She had accepted the risk because Vanessa had already tried something worse.

Three weeks earlier, Elena's prenatal vitamins had been replaced with identical capsules containing a powerful sedative.

The laboratory report was now in Detective Ruiz's possession.

Two weeks earlier, the brake line on Elena's car had been partially cut.

The mechanic's photographs were in the same file.

And five nights ago, a microphone hidden in Elena's dressing room had captured Vanessa speaking to someone named Caleb about "ending this before the baby changes the will."

Elena had not known who Caleb was.

Ruiz did.

Caleb Mercer was a private investigator who had once worked security for Howard Industries.

He had also been fired for blackmail.

Vanessa had paid him eleven thousand dollars in cash over four months.

That was why Elena had agreed to the staircase plan.

Not to get revenge.

To make Vanessa act openly while police were close enough to intervene.

But there was one problem Elena had not expected.

Nathan had never been told the full plan.

Ruiz insisted on that.

If Nathan knew, Vanessa might read the truth on his face.

So Nathan's fear was real.

His anger was real.

And when he stared at Elena now, believing his pregnant wife might be seriously injured, guilt tore through her.

The front doors opened suddenly.

Everyone turned.

But it was not Detective Ruiz.

It was Dr. Samuel Pierce, the Howard family's private physician, carrying his medical bag.

Vanessa went completely still.

Elena heard the smallest sound escape her.

A breath of recognition.

Dr. Pierce hurried toward Elena.

"Nobody move her."

He knelt beside her and reached for her wrist.

Then his fingers paused.

His eyes dropped toward the edge of Elena's cardigan.

Toward the tiny black corner of the hidden phone.

Elena opened her eyes a fraction.

Dr. Pierce looked directly at her.

And in that instant, Elena understood something she had not prepared for.

He knew about the phone.
